“To move closer to God in all that we do”

Welcome to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Community of Faith

Our readings today tell us about wisdom, a most important virtue. Wisdom is more than knowledge. We can know a lot of things, but wisdom tells me how to use what I know. We can know a lot but how does our knowledge benefit me and others. Today’s gospel tells us about the difference between the wise and foolish virgins, both had lamps, the wise bought oil, the foolish did not. The wise knew how to make their lamps work, the foolish did not. One of the tasks which all people have is to define their lives. What does a good life consist in? What does a meaningful life consist in? The answer is to live our lives in the most excellent way, which means, to live the virtues. Virtues are defined as moral excellences, the time honored way to live life. The virtues are many, for example, goodness, honesty, generosity, fortitude, temperance and so forth. But the Christian adds something more to the question of a good and meaningful life, it is to allow the Lord Jesus into our lives. He is the One who teaches us about a good and meaningful life. His teaching is quite simple, love of God and neighbor. From the very beginnings of our faith, Christian art has always painted philosophers around Jesus. Philosophers are important but they are limited. Jesus is depicted in the center, philosophers looking towards Jesus, philosophers pointing towards Jesus. Jesus is the One who teaches us about a good and meaningful life. My best to you, Fr. Sheridan

Speaking of Liturgy Matthew’s gospel of the bridesmaids is unique to Matthew. It is a striking image, isn’t it? To have Jesus say, “I do not know you!” Vigilance was not enough, after all, the wise bridesmaids, fell asleep too. For Matthew, having the “oil” represents preparedness. For us, we pray that our regular reception of the body and blood of Christ at Eucharist is preparing us. Asking us to be vigilant might be thought of as a highlight of the liturgical season of Advent! This year we here at SFX have special booklets for your home in the display case in the back of church that are Daily Advent Prayers for the family, titled What Are We Waiting For? In addition, you’ll find An Amazing Journey, which is a booklet with everyday reflections, practices and prayers for Advent. Feel free to take one for yourself, plus the one for the family. And, of course, aren’t we doing as today’s gospel asks us this year as we get prepared for the new Mass Responses and Prayers required of us by the Third Edition of The Roman Missal that will begin with Advent!

We hope everyone remembered to “Fall Back” at 2:00 am this morning November 6th!!

Can you please take a few minutes and pick up your copy at the Parish Office today?

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Priest: Have mercy on us, O Lord. People: For we have sinned against you. Priest: Show us, O Lord, your mercy. People: And grant us your salvation.

Another Sharing Parish for SFX Saint Francis Xavier has another sharing parish. We are forming a new link to Immaculate Conception parish (Immaculee Concepcion) a wonderful faith filled parish in Haiti, our near neighbor in the Caribbean. Parishioners Jody and Frank Weschler began working in the Haiti region many years ago delivering medical care. After the earthquake in January 2010, Jody organized shipments of medical supplies and clothing from our community. Jody also began again to make service visits to Haiti. Jody’s visits brought her to Immaculate Conception Parish in the rural village of Galete-Chabon, east of Port au Prince, the capital of Haiti. The Pastor of the parish is Fr. Patrick Plaisival. The parishioners of IC parish have built a church building that serves over 1000 families. They intend to build a school to bring education and faith formation to over 500 school age children. Until then school is conducted in a lean-to at the side of the church. We are just beginning to think of the many ways that we at SFX can become involved with our new sharing parish. So far our children have made rosaries for the children of Galette-Chabon and our SFX parish school is raising money to drill a much needed well. We also expect that we will be enriched by the faith and culture of our new Haitian friends. Their strength and resilience in facing natural disaster and other hardships has been remarkable. We are forming a Haiti Sharing Parish Committee to guide our efforts with this new project. Find out more about this exciting new ministry! Please come to a brief meeting on November 16 at 7:30 pm in the Xavier Room South to see pictures of Immaculate Conception parish and hear about it from Jody and Frank.

WORD: Holy Listening Each week we gather to relax and listen to a short passage from scripture, reflect on God’s word, respond in prayer, and rest in God’s presence. The scripture passages are taken from the Sunday Gospel to support our journey. This ancient but simple process allows God’s word to touch us in our daily lives and transform our hearts. St. Thomas of Canterbury School Up and Running We are off to a great start at St. Thomas of Canterbury School this year. We have new students from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Philippines, Ghana, India, Viet Nam and Nigeria. Our family is always international! Our eighth graders are making their plans for high school. Recently, 17 students visited Loyola Academy and 9 visited St. Ignatius. They are hoping to follow their fellow classmates from the class of 2011. We make a very special effort to help our students gain admission and scholarships to excellent Catholic high schools. Last spring, the class of 2011 earned more than $200,000 per year in scholarships, generally to Catholic high schools. However, several of our students from the class of 2011 were admitted to Northside College Prep, Chicago's most prestigious public school. With so many applicants, this school has become a very elite admission. Petros Berhe, class of 2011, was named a Dumbach Scholar at Loyola Academy. Petros is the youngest of seven children of this Eritrean family, of whom five children are or were Ramblers. Petros is the brother of Fyori Berhe, class of 2010, who was selected for the Fr. Harnett Scholarship through St. Francis Xavier Women’s Club. Again, we very much appreciate all that the parishioners at St. Francis Xavier do for our school. Thank you again and again and again!! Let Us Sing the New Translation The Vatican Council indicated that there should be “full and active participation of the congregation” during our liturgies. What a good time for this to happen, as we begin using the new translation of the Roman Missal in our prayer and in our song. The new translation will officially be used on the first Sunday of Advent. But we have been given permission to start using the new Mass settings so the congregation can become acquainted with them.

October 30th we will begin a new Mass setting of the Gloria November 6th we will add the Holy Holy November 13th we will add the Mystery of Faith November 20th we will add the Lamb of God November 27th we will use all of the Glendalough Mass except the Gloria which we will use after Christmas The Glendalough Mass setting is in the hymnal racks. Important information regarding communion visits and pastoral care of the sick in the local hospitals. Please Read Carefully! Due to intensified national privacy concerns at hospitals and medical facilities, it has become increasingly difficult for our Priests and Ministers of Care to provide communion calls and pastoral visits to our parishioners that are hospitalized locally. You are very important to the pastoral staff at St. Francis. To assist us in providing quality care to those in need please note the following information. The patient or family must take the initiative to have spiritual needs met. If you would like to be anointed prior to a planned hospital visit, please call the parish office in advance, or request an anointing as instructed in our Sunday bulletin following the liturgy. Anointing can also be requested in the hospital. When you are being admitted to the hospital it is critical that you or a loved one identifies your religious affiliation, including the name of the parish. Either you or a loved one should indicate you are requesting Catholic Pastoral Care from those available in the hospital to provide this care. The patient or family can also contact the parish or the Pastoral Care Office for spiritual support at the hospital during their hospital stay.
