Your travel guide to Salo

Salo - more than a city When you arrive in Salo, you walk on ground that has been inhabited ever since the Stone Age. The central location, the waterways and good agricultural land have contributed to the prosperity of the region for centuries. The area has a long tradition in trading, with its wealthy estates and iron works laying the foundation for industrial activity. The Salo region has always been inhabited by open-minded and enterprising people with the ability to see and do things in a new way.

Nowadays the city is mainly known for its high-tech expertise and a diverse range of services; it is an attractive shopping destination for those outside the region as well. In addition, agriculture remains an essential part of Salo, both in terms of know-how and the landscape. The entrepreneurial spirit of the people is also reflected in Salo’s diverse cultural life and sports and fitness. Salo’s success is based on open-minded approach to everything new and a rich history. However, Salo is first and foremost a city for people – a good place to live in. In Salo, the countryside is never far away, providing unique opportunities for enjoying an urban lifestyle in verdant surroundings or even for living in a genuine rural setting. The surrounding countryside, with its rivers, lakes and bays offers people living in or visiting Salo many of opportunities for personal enjoyment.

Come with me; I’ll show you my Salo.

This is my city. I’ve always lived here, and when I’ve been elsewhere on business or on holiday I’ve missed this place. From the novel ‘Salo’ by Turkka Hautala.

Sweet dreams!

Even though there’s a wealth of things to do here, you need to sleep too. Unfortunately, I cannot put all of you up, but you’ll find a choice of high-standard hotels as well as self-catering accommodation from luxury villas to cosy holiday cottages in the Salo region. An apartment hotel is a good option, especially if you are travelling with a large family or group of friends. The countryside in the Salo region welcomes visitors all year round. Hospitable bed-and-breakfast farms offer city people a chance to get a little taste of rural life. There is also a wide range of self-catering holiday cottages to choose from. You can also stay in fishing villages. Take the children on nature trips, row to a nearby island for a picnic and try your luck at fishing - the perch simply snap at the bait!

Salo has accommodation options to suit everyone - choose a highquality downtown hotel, a villa, charming farm accommodation, a cottage or even stay at a campground that’s guaranteed to have a million stars.

4 Welcome to Salo

Camping sites offer caravanners and campers the opportunity to stay close to nature, with modern facilities conveniently at hand. Camping always gives you a certain sense of freedom, I think. What would make a more perfect camping night than sitting on the shore playing cards and listening to a portable radio under a star-lit sky?

Salo in days of yore The Salo region has been inhabited for some 9,000 years. This is no wonder, as it was blessed with good prospects for development: the sea, rivers and fertile land, which still play a central role here. Salo has been at the forefront of cultural development in Finland ever since the Stone Age. Thanks to its excellent location, it was one of the first areas in the country to be influenced by new trends from elsewhere in the world. People who lived here a long time ago left their imprint on the region. Implements made of stone and dating from the pre-pottery period have been discovered in Suomusjärvi. The sword forged by 12th century master blacksmith Gicelin is proof of the prosperity and cosmopolitan nature of Rikalanmäki.

Beautiful old manors and medieval stone churches constantly bring to mind images of the world long ago. I can almost see the royalty and nobles riding grandly through the river scenery to the grey stone churches under the admiring eyes of the common folk.

6 Welcome to Salo

One can also imagine a medieval man repenting of his sins in front of the oak crucifix in the church of Halikko, or the Armfelt brothers chasing each other in the grounds of Wiurila Manor in the 19th century. You too are sure to discover fascinating stories in the history of Salo.

Salo Art Museum is located in a restored 100-year-old railway roundhouse engine shed (hence its name: Veturitalli). It has changing exhibitions, an art reference library, a museum shop and a café that is open by agreement. Concerts, meetings and other events are also held at Veturitalli. The KIVA Arts Centre provides a venue for concerts, dance and comedy. The Evening Market taking place in Salo on Thursdays in summer is a top event in every sense. It is the city’s ’living room’, with top Finnish artists performing on stage, stallholders and the famous flea market, which is a veritable treasure trove of vintage furnishing items, high-quality children’s clothes and lots more. Check out what’s on this summer at www.saloniltatori.fi. We have at least eight theatres in the Salo region, including the outdoor summer theatres. We also have first-rate concerts, exhibitions and themed events, such as the Salo – Children’s Song City festival. Sports clubs organise various sports events throughout the Salo region. Long-standing annual events include the Salo-Volley volleyball tournament, the Halikko Rowing Race, the Halikko Orienteering Relay, the Kisko Triathlon and the Salo Challenge series of multi-sport events. www.salo.fi/tapahtumakalenteri

On summer Thursdays, the evening markets offer top domestic artists, market vendors, crepe cafés, second-hand dealers and a flea market especially for children. www.saloniltatori.fi

Ideal for sports Salo is a paradise for sports lovers. Our volleyball teams excel at national level. And, although I am not saying I am completely mad, I must confess that golf has stolen my heart. When I am holding the grip, there’s just me, the green and the ball. The Salo region boasts three international-standard golf courses and the longest golf season in the country. Disc golf, also known as frisbee golf, is a great sport that suits all ages and sizes. You can often hear the clatter of skateboards in the city-centre Sports Park, but there are also plenty of other sports facilities on offer. Salo also has 90 km of trails, 50 of which are lit. If you are keen on fishing, head for Särkisalo, a charming maritime district with its countless islands and famous pike fishing. The Salo region also has 130 kilometres of canoeing routes, which you can use independently or with a guide.

Vuohensaari has a campsite, accommodation, a café-restaurant, a nature trail, a playground, a sandy beach and many more reasons to drop in or stay a little longer. During the peak summer season, a summer theatre also operates in the area. www.vuohensaari.fi

A crackling campfire, a late-night swim and the song of marsh warblers – pure and simple natural experiences that take your mind off the daily grind. Explore the great outdoors independently, or, if you are an inexperienced hiker, go on guided trips on the various trails in our region. The Teijo Hiking Area, in particular, is a chance to discover the wonders of nature. The water areas in our region are a world of their own. Halikonlahti bay is considered one of the best bird-watching areas in Southwest Finland. Even the ring-necked duck, which is rare in Finland, has been spotted at the bay. The Lake Aneriojärvi nature trail and bird-watching tower are perfect for observing the spring migration of birds. On the same trip you can explore the area’s Stone Age sites. The hardwood groves and large oak trees of the Vaisakko conservation area are impressive. Various rare species of fungi and lichen thrive in the shade of the trees. You can also take a pleasure flight in a small aircraft to get a wonderful bird’s eye view of the region, with its forests, fields and meandering roads.

Meri-Teijo offers great leisure-time experiences all year round. The maritime nature provides an incredible setting for an active holiday while the idyllic iron works villages take you on fascinating trip into the past. Teijo Hiking Area is a great place for backpacking. Once the day is done, you can camp in a lean-to shelter beside a crackling campfire, surrounded by wilderness lakes and forest. www.meri-teijo.fi

Fun for children “Are we there yet?” is an often-heard question when families travel together. The great advantage with Salo is that it is easy to reach. You can travel here conveniently by train from, for example, Helsinki or Turku, or by car along the new motorway. Guided nature trips are also suitable for families with children. They offer the opportunity to spend some quality time together close to nature. Picnics around a campfire and camping out in a tent or a lean-to shelter under the stars are sure to be memorable experiences. The lovely creatures in farm animal parks and on holiday farms will melt everybody’s heart, and at riding stables the whole family can have fun riding.

At least once a month the children want to go to the animal park. One of them likes the little pigs, the other the chickens. All the lovely animals can be stroked and fed by hand. And a trip to the new playworld Namila is guaranteed to please everyone, no matter how old they are. www.namila.fi

Fresh, local flavours We can boast of a rich, living ‘larder’ close to the centre of the city. Our fertile countryside produces grain for bread and beer, potatoes, carrots, beetroots, cabbages, apples, cucumbers and fine lettuces; and there are greenhouses full of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and flowers. Our local farms raise ducks, geese and turkeys, as well as pigs, sheep and cattle, and we get fish and crayfish from the archipelago. The abundance of the naturally marshy land is impossible to describe in full. The gourmet has much to choose from: includes meat, fish, root and other vegetables, mushrooms and even beestings.

Shopping is a good reason to come to Salo!

The people of Salo are especially proud of the town’s nationwide fame as a good place to shop. Many of the shops in the centre have stone foundations; they all have a warm and welcoming atmosphere and you might well be served by a third-generation shop owner, so the service is personal and provided by experts. There is a wide selection of goods available from the high-quality shopping centres and other commercial areas, and Salo’s marketplace and Thursday evening markets are well worth visiting in the summer. The unrushed and friendly service, excellent choice and free parking make for a splendid combination.

Nothing can beat shopping in a small town. We have really nice little shops side by side, with shopping centres in between and good places to eat. You can often park your car for free right outside the shop.

For groups Salo is also a versatile destination for visitors arriving in groups. In Salo you can combine a meeting, celebration or other group travel itinerary with a visit to one of the grand old manors, enjoyment of local culture, delving into the past, exploring tranquil village lanes, browsing in the city shops – and receiving hospitable treatment wherever you go. Salo Tourist Information can make an offer for tours and services that are just right for your group. It’s also a good idea to register yourself and your friends for the Thursday tours held in conjunction with the Suvisalo evening markets. The manor tours are particularly popular and often attract a full busload of visitors. The tours are scheduled for 3-6 pm, so you still have time to enjoy the performances at the evening market. 28 Welcome to Salo

Iron works tour Industry came to the Teijo region, with its iron works and blast furnaces, at the end of the 17th century, creating iron works communities in the area. Over the centuries, the Rococo Teijo Manor has been occupied by characterful iron works owners. From the manor you move on to Finland’s smallest stone church in Teijo, whose buildings and surroundings are designated national cultural heritage sites. Industrial activity and iron production began at the Iron Works at Kirjakkala in 1686. The iron works village is full of restored ancient buildings which can be hired for meetings or recreational purposes. A buffet lunch is taken at the Lehmiranta Holiday Centre, from where you continue on to Rikalanmäki, in Halikko. The area is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Finland. Rikala’s main concentration of sites dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries is best explored with a guide. The King’s Road Culinary Tour Your trip begins at Wiurila Manor, where you’ll be served manor coffee in the magnificent household centre building designed by C.L Engel. The manor staff will present the history of the manor and give you a tour of the Manor Museum and Wagon Museum, This part of the tour focuses on the history of the Armfelt family in Halikko. The tour ends in the romantic Manor Shop, where you can do some shopping. The next stop is Leipyöli Farm, where a tasty and filling lunch is served. Located on the banks of Perniö’s Kiskonjoki River in south-western Finland, this historical residence of a king’s bailiff has strong, centuries-old traditions. The owners will tell you about the colourful and interesting history of the farm.

EXAMPLES OF EXCURSIONS The archipelago Salo has more than 300 kilometres of coastline, and in the Särkisalo area there are over 100 islands. This was a busy shipping area in the 19th century, when fishing and shipbuilding were important to the local economy. Enjoy a coffee at the 19th century farmhouse at Katiskanmäki, after which you can buy local products at Mormuska, a shop specialising in handicrafts. Outside in the yard there are tame animals to see. The Meripirtti Museum and tiny, idyllic wooden church at Särkisalo, with its votive ships, present maritime and fishing themes, speak of the parish’s nautical past. On the trip you can have a typical lunch in the atmospheric Kotiseututalo Villa in Tallback, where you can travel back in time amid the old furniture, dishes and other objects on display. After lunch you visit the charming fishing hamlet of Armonlaakso, with its traditional island buildings and ancient history. The Manors of Halikko Halikko has a vibrant, rich history, magnificent manor houses, and a valuable cultural landscape. Follow in the footsteps of the statesman Gustav Mauritz Armfelt and explore the grey stone church dedicated to Saint Bridget, in Halikko, as well as the graves of former nobles. The permanent exhibition at Halikko Museum, its Armfelt Family Exhibition and collection of weapons are also worth a look, as is the Franssintalo handicraft shop. In the outbuildings of Wiurila Manor, designed by Engel, you can learn about the manor’s eventful history and visit the carriage museum. After a buffet lunch in the manor’s restaurant, you can spend a while in the shop. Salo Art Museum is located in a restored 100-year-old railway roundhouse (hence its nickname “Veturitalli”). Its many details, including the water tower, are a reminder of the building’s history, and provide a splendid space for the art exhibition. Design Hill & Design Hill Café is a delightful place to stop by for a shopping or a delicious special coffee and mouth-watering pastries.

The culinary tour concludes with afternoon coffee served at Teijon Masuuni. After serving as an iron works for centuries, Teijon Masuuni now houses art exhibitions and artisans’ products. A guide will accompany you through the neighbouring Teijo Manor and Teijo Iron works Church. On the Wallesmann Church Road The meeting of west and east has left a veritable treasure trove in the region: manors, medieval churches, and tales of feuding powerful families and the lives of ordinary country folk. From Halikko to Perniö you travel along the Great Coastal Road, also known as the King’s Highway. The excursion begins with a guided tour of the grey stone church dedicated to Saint Bridget and a visit to the graves of former nobles. Enjoy a coffee in the outbuildings of Wiurila Manor, designed by Engel, where you can learn about the manor’s eventful history and visit the carriage museum. After the tour, you can spend a while in the attractive shop. At Melkkilä Manor in Perniö, we stop in the courtyard, with its lush parkland, which partly dates back to the 19th century. Lunch is taken at Leipyöli Farm, the former site of the dwelling of the king’s bailiff. Then a stop in the courtyard of Näse Manor and a nature trip to the Latokartano rapids, with the old stone ruins of the iron works and mill close by. The trip ends with a visit to Pyhä Lauri Church (St Lawrence Church), whose surroundings are of hugely important cultural and historical value to the nation. All these excursions can be taken all year long. They last between six and eight hours. Association accreditation. Ask about guiding rates.
