OCTOBER 2014 ISSUE 12 RD 3 ANNIVERSARY EDITION ENHANCING RESEARCH INTO NON HODGKIN LYMPHOMA IN CHILDREN

Welcome to Issue Twelve Alex Hulme Foundation Newsletter It is hard to believe another three months has flown by since our last edition. More to the point it’s that time of year when the anniversary of losing Alex comes round and the mood around us changes so much. Three years have now passed since our special superstar grew his wings to watch over us all and through the sadness we cannot help but believe that he is playing a big part in the success of the charity that bears his name. We feel an inner strength to keep pushing forward to ensure the Foundation meets its aim and we provide better treatment for children in the future. Alex gives us the inspiration, along with Matt, they are our world.

CHARITY OF THE YEAR 2014 th

On Thursday 16 October, we attended the Altrincham and Sale Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Evening, held at the Best Western Cresta Court Hotel, Altrincham. The night was hosted by local radio station Key 103 DJ, Darren Proctor and attended by 180 guests, representing local businesses from the Altrincham and Sale area. We were invited to join the Chamber in order to improve awareness of the Foundation within the local business community and we have met some fantastic people who have been very supportive. A raffle was held during the evening and the Chamber, very generously, donated the proceeds to the Foundation. Of the ten awards being presented, the Foundation had been nominated and then short listed for Charity of the Year. We were delighted and honoured to find out that the Foundation had won and we were presented with a beautiful glass trophy. The evening’s events were shared through all the social media channels, re-tweeted and shared on Facebook. The event was covered by the Messenger Group newspaper and will also be featured in a Manchester business magazine. The exposure we have, and will receive from this one event will be huge and help to spread the awareness of the Foundation. Although we physically collected the Award, we did so, on behalf of all of our very special family, friends and supporters who have helped the Foundation get to where it is now. Without your help, we could not have achieved our goal of providing a legacy for our beautiful boy and working to find a cure in his name.

OUR WORLD

SALE RUGBY CLUB In late July we were delighted to be informed that Sale Rugby Club had announced they were privileged and proud to be able to support the Alex Hulme Foundation in an official capacity as the club's chosen charity. Chief Executive Mike Jefferson says "With the humbling story of Alex at the forefront of all involved, I feel that the club as a whole with its direct connections to Dave, Nic and Matt as coach, member and junior player, can offer our support in any way we can to increase the awareness of this wonderful Foundation. I would like to think that with the all connections, members and strong links and synergy with Sale Sharks we make an immediate impact for this cause”. We are humbled, grateful and honoured by this announcement and this fantastic association with Sale Rugby Club only strengthens our link with the game in our area. We are already delighted to have Sale Sharks & New Zealand international Sam Tuitupou as our Ambassador ably assisted by his team mate and Samoan international Johnny Leota. If you feel you can help enhance this relationship and would like to discuss it in greater detail please contact the Foundation on [email protected] or Mike Jefferson at Sale FC on 07867 128463 or [email protected]

No rest for the wicked! Full term has started in earnest in Cambridge and with 24 hours of teaching to be conducted alongside my research it has been a busy few weeks. We also welcomed new postgraduate students to the Department including Sorcha, our first Alex Hulme Foundation PhD student. I am pleased to say that Sorcha is settling in very well and is getting to grips with her research project. We hope to have data to share with you soon. Another monumental moment has been the ethical approval for the clinical trial for children in the UK diagnosed with B-NHL and its associated biological study. This is great news and means that children can be recruited to the trial with immediate effect. These children will receive a drug that has revolutionised the treatment of adults with B-NHL; unlike most drugs, this one, which is called Retuximab, is not a small chemical but an antibody that actively seeks out and destroys the cancer cells. Through a biological study being conducted as part of the trial, we will have access to patient tumour material so that we can look for the cancer stem cells, the ‘Queen bees’ – the subject of Sorcha’s PhD project. We hope that identifying these cells will enable us to find unique therapies that will in the future prevent disease relapse. Watch this space! Kind Regards Suzanne Dr Suzanne D. SORCHA FORDE AHF PHD STUDENTSHIP

A NOTE FROM SORCHA My first impression of Cambridge is that it is a truly unique, exciting and friendly city. Although only a short plane journey from home, arriving in a new place is always daunting and I am very grateful to have been so warmly welcomed by both the lab and the department. My first few weeks here have been packed with safety and training courses but I have also gotten a chance to sample what Cambridge student life has to offer. From punting on the river Cam to ancient traditions at my College matriculation ceremony to pub crawls around the city there hasn’t been a dull moment. I am very much looking forward to the weeks and months ahead which, I have no doubt, will be filled with exciting challenges both in the lab and on the roads as I try to master the rules of Cambridge cycling! I am delighted to have been selected for this prestigious Alex Hulme Foundation PhD Studentship Award so can guarantee I would do my utmost to uphold the reputation of the university and most importantly I will dedicate myself completely to honoring the legacy of Alex through this research. Thank you Sorcha Forde

DAVID RANDALL We recently featured, on the website, a story about David Randall who, at the age of 60, was attempting to swim the English Channel, a dream he had had for many years. David was planning to complete the swim and, in turn, raise a huge amount of money for three local charities: The Alex Hulme Foundation, Stockdales and The Samaritans. th David started his attempt on 5 September, after waiting a number of days for the ideal weather conditions. He valiantly swam for over 8 hours but unfortunately, due to the increasingly bad weather and for his own safety; he reluctantly had to abort his attempt at 2:19pm. We are honoured that David chose us as one of the charities he was supporting and delighted to receive a share of the fantastic £4,400 he managed to raise in sponsorship.

RAINBOW 88 Oh what a night we had!! The Mayor of Stockport, Kevin Hogg and his wife Kathleen had arranged a night of entertainment at Rainbow 88, a Chinese Restaurant based in Cheadle Hulme. The night was to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the start of the First World War and the brave soldiers who fought in that war, and every conflict since. The aim was also to raise money for the Mayors Charities Fund. The restaurant is owned and run by the very energetic and vibrant Linda Lamb who oversaw proceedings and contributed to most of them. We were entertained by the fantastic Sisters of Swing, with songs from the era, while we were treated to a beautiful Chinese meal. Fundraising on the evening took the form of a raffle, an auction and even; guess the length of Linda’s speech. An enjoyable time was had by all and we are looking forward to another trip to Rainbow 88 in the New Year; we will keep you informed.

BAXTER’S BLOG Hello everybody and welcome to Autumn. I love this season as every time my Mum takes me for a walk….. notice I said Mum and not Dad or Matt! (I wonder if you can guess who is helping me with my blog for this edition.) Anyway, before I was so rudely interrupted, I was saying about going for walks at this time of year and sniffing in every pile of leaves, just in case I can sniff that elusive scent that drives me crazy!! I also love rolling on the ground, especially if I can find a big, smelly, muddy patch to do it in. Mum seems to get quite upset if I do this; perhaps she should give it a try and see how good it feels? I will tell you about my Summer now; I did get a bit hot under my collar so I have had to have two haircuts since I last blogged. Dad took me to a new place this time and he caught me off guard because I didn’t know where we were, until he left me and did a runner! It wasn’t too bad and I was quite happy when Mum took me back the second time, that woman deserves a medal, except for the fact that they thought it necessary to attach a bow to my collar when they had finished! Oh the shame!! Could she not see I am a boy? After all, they spent enough time in that vicinity, I am beginning to worry that they are blind, which is not a great affliction to have when my boyhood is on the line!! Back to the bow, my mates on the field thought it was hilarious, Ricoh, a rather large German Shepard, took the mickey, but I let him off because he is much bigger than me but when Dexter, the Yorkshire terrier had a go I chased him till his little legs were worn out, I’m not taking abuse from anyone smaller than me!! I had the last say though, as it fell off in the garden and I ate it! We had a trip to Wales, Porthmadog to be precise, where Grandma & Grandad have a caravan. The lovely people at the site had a fun day for Alex’s Foundation and they even let us stay in a dog friendly caravan, complete with treats and a big water bowl, ahh!! 5 star luxury. The weather was good during the day when all the children were playing on the bouncy castle and eating burgers, yum yum, my favourite. At night time a lovely lady called Nicola, all the nice girls are called Nicola, did some singing, got everybody dancing and shouted numbers out. I think people won things but it got very cold and so I curled up on my mum’s knee and went to sleep! I hope you have enjoyed my blog? Lots of woofs and tail wags

NEW WEBSITE – COMING SOON! We are delighted to report that, having been approached by Nikki Robinson and Amanda Phillips from Avid Business Solutions, www.avidbusinesssolutions.co.uk the Foundation will soon have a shiny new website. Nikki and Amanda have been working tirelessly in recent weeks to produce a bright and more functional site which will form the basis of the next step of the development of the Foundation. Whilst still retaining the branding so kindly created for us by ASK Design and the fundamentals of our existing site, the team at Avid have worked their magic to create a more functional gateway to the world of the Alex Hulme Foundation. Our website address will remain the same so please check in on a regular basis or watch this space for further developments.

GIFT AID Gift Aid increases the value of your donations and means we can benefit even more at no extra cost to you. If you're a UK taxpayer, add Gift Aid whenever you make a donation and we can reclaim the basic rate of tax on your gift - that's a massive 25p for every £1 you give. Higher rate tax payers can claim additional tax benefits for donations they make to charity, which you can keep, or pass on to any charitable organization. As a taxpayer, you’ll already have paid tax on any money you donate to charity. When you donate, you are asked if

LIAM MCGOVERN & MIKE JEFFERSON FROM SALE RUBGY WITH THEIR NEW SHIRT COMPLETE WITH AHF LOGO ON THE BACK

you wish to add Gift Aid. If you do, we can claim back the tax you originally paid at the basic income tax rate. Example You earn £12.50 and £2.50 tax is deducted from this at the basic income tax rate. This leaves you with £10. You then donate the £10 through Gift Aid and we can claim an extra £2.50 (the tax you paid at basic rate) from the government to make your total donation £12.50.

FOREIGN COINS? Are you going abroad on holiday or on business this half term? If so, and you return with unused currency, you may find it difficult to exchange the coins back to sterling. The Foundation is now able to exchange foreign coins as well as notes, even those that are no longer in circulation. If you have any currency you wish to donate, please get in touch as this would be gratefully received. Thank you. [email protected]

JUST TEXT GIVING Donations can now be made by texting ALEX29 to 70070 along with the amount you wish to donate. For example, if you wish to donate £5 you would write a text message reading ALEX29 £5 and send it to 70070. Donations can be to the value of £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10.
