FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, ELCA A “Reconciling in Christ” congregation 12449 California Street Yucaipa, California 92399 (909) 790-1816 www.faithlutheranyucaipa.org email: [email protected] Rev. Liz Williams, Pastor [email protected]

Jesus begins his public ministry by calling fishers to leave their nets and follow him. In Jesus the kingdom of God has come near. We who have walked in darkness have seen a great light. We see this light most profoundly in the cross—as God suffers with us and all who are oppressed by sickness, sin, or evil. Light dawns for us as we gather around the word, the font, and the holy table. We are then sent to share the good news that others may be “caught” in the net of God’s grace and mercy. GATHERING OPENING VOLUNTARY GATHERING SONG Shine, Jesus, Shine ELW 671 WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Please stand. OPENING HYMN Dearest Jesus, at Your Word ELW 520 CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who stretches out the heavens, who sends light to the nations, who gives breath to us all. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Loving God, we confess that we have turned from your way to follow our own ways. Forgive us for the times we have spoken or acted too quickly; 2

we have not spoken or acted at all; we have hurt those closest to us; we have hurt those we have yet to know; we have thought more about ourselves than others; we have thought less of ourselves than we ought. Turn us around, and give us a fresh start, so that we can live again as your children. Amen. Even when we have done wrong, God makes us right. Even when we have messed up, God puts us together. God’s love never runs out. God never tires of calling us beloved children. Hear God say to you now: Your sins are forgiven, for the sake of ☩ Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Gospel: Matthew 4:12-23 Jesus begins his public ministry shortly after John the Baptist is imprisoned by Herod. He proclaims the nearness of God’s reign and calls four fishermen to be his first disciples. The holy gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord. Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. 5

Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people. The gospel of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated. SERMON Pastor Liz Williams Notes

HYMN OF THE DAY You Have Come Down to the Lakeshore ELW 817 vs. 1, 2, 4 Please stand. NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and 6

glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Called to be a light to the nations, let us pray for God’s justice, peace, and healing. A brief silence. Assisting Minister: Holy God, you call us to fish for people. Tear down divisions and unite the church universal in your mission. Make us of the same mind and purpose in service and worship to you. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Nurturing God, you call us to care for creation. Breathe into us the joy and beauty of stewardship. Teach us to care for the small seed and the expansive sky. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Compassionate God, you call us to care for the stranger in our midst. Sustain refugees from every country and empower organizations that provide food and shelter for them, especially Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Redeeming God, you break the oppressor’s rod. Bring an end to tyranny and poverty. Wipe out fear. Uphold all your children who suffer in body, mind, or spirit (especially Mark, Marion, the staff at Cherry Valley Healthcare, Trude, John, Myrtle, Anne, Cecilia, Carli, Nancy, Tamra, family of Dorothy Nelson). Heal us with your presence. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others, aloud with our voices or silently in our hearts. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

7

Triune God, you call us into relationship with you. Raise up leaders in your church who risk looking foolish for the sake of the gospel. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Ever-living God, you call us to rest in you. Keep us faithful on earth and bring us to life everlasting with the saints of every time and place. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Receive these prayers in the name of Christ, the light of the world, who is one with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. Please be seated. OFFERING The Offering is received as the table is prepared. OFFERING ANTHEM The Lord is My Light Chancel Choir Please stand.

OFFERTORY

OFFERING PRAYER Assisting Minister: Merciful God, receive the gifts we bring, our selves, our time, and our possessions. Through this meal unite us as your body, shining with the light of your justice and mercy; for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 9

It is indeed right and our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, for the glorious resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ, the true Paschal Lamb who gave himself to take away our sin, who in dying has destroyed death, and in rising has brought us to eternal life. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

10

Holy, Holy, Holy

Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal: surrounded by the struggles of our life we appeal to you, our Loving God, our Wisdom, and our Judge. We praise you for Christ, who died at human hands but who then rose from death to life. He proclaimed your reign of peace and promised an end to injustice and harm. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. 11

Remembering, therefore, the sacrifice of his life and death and the victory of his resurrection, we await with all the saints his loving redemption of our suffering world. Send your Spirit on these gifts of bread and wine and on all who share in the body and blood of your Son: teach us your mercy and justice, and make our life and all things new in Christ. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. The presider breaks the bread. The bread we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. Please be seated. INVITATION TO COMMUNION We who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. Come. Be filled with light and life.

Lamb of God

COMMUNION SONG Here I Am, Lord ELW 574 Please stand as you are able. After all have returned to their places, the minister may say these or similar words: May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the gifts of his body and blood strengthen, keep and unite us, now and forever. Amen. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Assisting Minister: O Morning Star, fair and bright, you have refreshed us again with heavenly food. You are our dearest treasure. Go with us now— today, tomorrow, every day— that we tell the story of your never-ending love and sing your praise both now and forever. Amen. 13

SENDING Please stand. A FRANCISCAN BLESSING May God bless us with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that we may live deep within our hearts. May God bless us with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that we may work for justice, freedom, and peace. May God bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, hunger, and war, so that we may reach out our hands to comfort them and turn their pain into joy. And may God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that we can make a difference in this world, so that we can do what others claim cannot be done, to bring justice and kindness to all our children and the poor. Amen. CLOSING HYMN Will You Come and Follow Me ELW 798 vs. 1, 2, 5 SEMI-ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING You are invited to attend. From Sundays and Seasons.com. Copyright 2013 Augsburg Fortress.
