Welcome a new Board Member CAD is pleased to announce our newest Board Member, Bonita Adair. Bonita sets up a deaf movement, called “Deaf Grassroots Movement” (DGM) in Colorado. Their three main goals are: 1. Equality in jobs and advancement opportunities 2. Equality so that communication barriers are removed 3. Equality in education for the children You can contact Bonita at [email protected]. If you are interested to serve with us on the CAD Board of Directors, contact President Jennifer Pfau at [email protected] or Secretary Avis Taylor DuPree at [email protected].

From President’s Desk By Jennifer Pfau On November 7, 2015, the CAD board shared the annual report with the recent progress it has made to refine and deepen the focus with the Colorado Association of the Deaf at the Rocky Mountain Deaf School in Denver, CO. The CAD board truly appreciated the Colorado relay’s support to allow the board to share its report before the 25th Year Anniversary event. The event turned out well and the community responded in a very positive way that they enjoyed the annual report as well as the discussion involving the quality of interpreters. There is a desire to continue the work with communication access issues as well as enabling the community in learning more about the resources we need to remove the barriers in our lives. The president reported on the work the CAD board had done during the year of 2015. After the board retreat and training, the board developed a new strategic framework to guide the organization’s investments with the community work on the following priorities: 1

Education Advocacy: Stronger focus on the systems that affect deaf children, and how to strategically and effectively support the deaf education systems to improve. Youth: To prepare for success in college and career, deaf youth needs to be able to engage and communication with others using the same mode of communication. The deaf youth need a sense of belonging, knowing they are part of, and truly engaged in, something bigger than they engage. Community Outreach: Partnership collaboration with wealth of information and resources available to the deaf community public as well as connection with the systematic leaders to improve communication access. Vice President Paul Simmons shared with the community, the final report and recommendations as well as the proposed vision and mission statements from the Colorado Rejuvenation Committee. During the annual report event, the Board sought for the community’s input and it was well received. The board sincerely thanked the CRC members for their dedication and commitment to their obligations. The CRC was an ad-hoc committee and it is now dissolved as the tasks were completed. The following committee members who served on the CRC are Noel Rivera, Chair; Cliff Moers, Timothy Chevalier, David Anthony and Rodney Navratil and all the others who gave their time on the CRC AD hoc committee. Newly Elected CAD Board for 2016: Paul Simmons, President Jennifer Pfau, Vice President Gary Etkie, Treasurer Avis Taylor DuPree, Secretary Swanhilda Lily, member Bev Buchanan, member Albert Tharpe, III, member Bonita Adair, member Special thanks to Chris Johnson who contributed his time, serving on the board in 2015. Without the support of the Oktoberfest committee and the members of the community, the deaf youth would not be able to continue and the board sincerely appreciates the members to continue hosting the annual fundraising event for the deaf youth. The CAD board will continue to expand in raising funds to continue its work involving education advocacy as well as the community outreach. Our work isn’t done as the board continues to finalize the CAD’s mission and vision, develop fiscal management system for funders, complete the policy and procedure development, logo/branding, obtain resources to meet with the priorities as set by the board during the retreat held in May 2015. The Board warmly welcomes your reflections, questions and engagement with our work. In closure, we wish you all the warmest of holiday cheers!

Deafhood 101 Class in Boulder – November 12 to 15, 2015 By Gary Etkie CAD officers discussed about Deafhood 101 workshop for 20 hours within four-day class and encouraged us to attend Deafhood 101 to help us understand better about Deaf Values and becoming Deaf Activists. Two workshops were held: one in Boulder and the other in Colorado Springs. Albert Tharpe III, Swanhilda Lily, Avis Taylor DuPree, Gary Etkie and Bonita Adair went to the Deafhood class at Colorado University in Boulder last November 12 – 15th. Paul Simmons and Bev Buchanan went to the Deafhood class in Colorado Springs last December 3 – 6th. Gary Etkie shared what happened at Colorado University – Boulder. You might want to know who attended, the other than CAD Officers, were Sabra Carlin, David Krueger, Ody Allen, Dawnena Michelle Muth, Kevin Bernadt, Greg Bland, Chris Dally, Rachel Boll, Elsie Stecker and Marissa Burdge. Butch Zien was our facilitator. We saw a lot of diversity of people, but we learned with each other's same boat as Deaf individuals are in. We had group activities and small group discussions. We shared our frustration or we struggled with the barriers we faced daily, supported one another, and left us feeling good at the end of each day about our DEAF. These workshops are all about gaining knowledge and feeling positive about ME. We learned about deafness vs. Deafhood, Colonialism, and Audism. The Deafhood class taught us to re-frame our thoughts. We need to enlighten ourselves on the dimensions of being Deaf and understand why or how the "system" put a lot of impacts on the Deaf people and community. We understood the history of discrimination and oppression. Additionally, throughout history around the world is reflected on Deaf people by the colonized or hegemonic people. It is thought-provoking yet, in a good way, we continue to remind us how we must re-adjust to reframe and envision about ourselves better. Also, we need to form an ally within the deaf community and how we may inadvertently contribute to Deaf's needs from all discriminations and oppressions.

Class in Colorado Springs – December 3 to 6, 2015 By Paul Simmons 13 members of the Colorado Springs Deaf community got together for the Deafhood 101 workshop at the Dwire Hall of the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs for our Deafhood classes with Butch Zein who had also conducted the Deafhood 101 classes in Boulder. At the beginning of the class, Butch guided us through the principles of what Deafhood is. Generally many people were confused about what Deafhood actually is. Deafhood is a term that was introduced by Dr. Paddy Ladd during his research into the Deaf community. Essentially, Deafhood is the opposite of what Deafness is. Deafness is a medical term outlining the degree of a hearing a person may have ranging from profoundly Deaf to mildly Deaf. Deafhood is the experience and the journey a Deaf person may experience in life. The basic core of Deafhood 101 is to help us analyze who we are and to give us tools to enhance our lives and to work towards breaking down barriers that we face as a community. We learned how colonialism by a specific group of hearing people, who work with and oppress Deaf people, named as “Specialists” by Paddy Ladd. Butch encouraged the Deaf community to shift our focus from trying to negotiate and to convince these Specialists about what we know is right to recruiting and working with the vast majority of hearing people who may, or may not, know anything about Deaf people and our language. These hearing people are termed as “Lay People” in Paddy Ladd’s 2003 book, “Understanding Deaf Culture: In Search of Deafhood.” It is by having a better understanding of what the Deaf community is facing as a whole that we can be better able to face our challenges and to make lasting change possible. At the end of the 4 day Deafhood 101 workshop, all the participants in the workshop were inspired and ready for the next round of learning more in Deafhood 201 which will be held in Colorado in 2016. We strongly encourage all Deaf people to take these Deafhood workshops when we offer them again…

Jr NAD Conference Report By Beverly Buchanan, Board Member First of all, I would like to thank Colorado Association of the Deaf to send me to Jr NAD Conference in Florida and the Colorado School for the Deaf & the Blind were able to send their two students plus an advisor, Bradley Brown. The Twenty-Fifth Biennial Jr. NAD Conference was held in Orlando, Florida from November 17-22, 2015. There were 27 chapters and 76 students. The students were divided into four groups called Together, Lead, Strive and Future. The program started at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 17 through Saturday evening of November 21 with a closure of Rosa Lee Show. On Thursday, November 19, we visited Florida School for the Deaf in St. Augustine and had a scavenger hunt in the old town of St. Augustine. Students were able to visit the beach and experience the sand among the Atlantic Ocean. One unique surprise that students were not aware, was a trip to the Universal Studios. They had a blast time especially at the Harry Potter Village. The rides were awesome and most of them were so 21st century. The roles that I have played during my stay at Jr. NAD conference were with students, advisors and general conference participants. 1) Tuesday, November 17, I gave out a team building activity for 3 hours – 100 ways to motivate yourself and a Jeopardy game on Jr. NAD History to students. 2) Wednesday, November 18, I gave out a presentation on my experience with the International Youth Leadership Training to Jr. NAD advisors. 3) Thursday, November 19, I worked with students on creating a video of Veditz reflecting the current perspectives of the student participants. 4) Saturday, November 21, during lunch time’s TEDx style themed as NADx Youth talk, I shared the highlights of Jr. NAD Winter Retreat via Power point and video. Overall, it was a fantastic opportunity to meet the diverse population of students, advisors, and guest speakers. I am sure that my contribution will enhance the national networking available for the Colorado Association of the Deaf.

The Art of Pastry: A Dream Realized By Peter DeHaas Rosetta (Zetta) Stevenson knew she wanted to be a chef when she was 4 years old after opening a can of grape juice with an opener by herself. She has fond memories of baking with her grandmother who taught her a few of the recipes that she still remembers and uses. When Zetta was in high school, one of her teachers asked her what she wanted to be. “I want to be a chef.” She replied. “Impossible, you’re deaf.” The teacher retorted. Those words stuck with Zetta as she graduated from the Maryland School for the Deaf and ventured off to the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago. Zetta completed her Degree in Culinary Art, received a certificate in professional baking & pastry AND a Degree in Hospitality Management. Zetta moved westward to Colorado in January 2012 to apply her newly acquired skills. With the assistance of the Colorado Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Zetta was able to get funding to start her business and had access to a professional marketing consultant. DVR also provided certified interpreters and provided other referrals for events for Zetta to participate in. Zetta Marie’s Patisserie is located in Loveland Colorado and has successfully provided pastries to several area businesses and events. To name a few successful partners to date:           

Denver Film Festival Rocky Mountain Deaf School Loveland Center for Business Development Loveland Chamber of Commerce Loveland Branch Elevations Credit Union Contagious Media The Dam Store People's Market Center for People with Disabilities DOVE Colorado Association of the Deaf

When asked what advice she has for other individuals who are deaf trying to start their own business Zetta replied “They must believe in themselves and believe in the possibility that can happen. I’ll be honest, owning and running my own business is a challenge, but if you have faith and put your mind to it, anything is possible.” If anyone is interested in ordering some of Zetta’s amazing pastries she can be contacted here: Email: [email protected] Videophone: 970-744-4427
