The fed cattle market continued to trend lower again this week. There were 243 fed steers and heifers sold through auction markets down 649 from last week and 835 less that this time last year. Steers sold from $106.38-$115.25 averaging $112.07 down $3.77 from last week and $0.32 higher that this time last year. Heifers traded from $105.01-$117.61 averaging $112.58 down $1.89 from last week and $1.68 stronger than year ago prices. Auction markets reported trade as under pressure with easier prices up to $2.00 lower. The cull cow market continues to sell strong and steady with 1,610 cull cows coming to market this week, down 832 from last week and 881 less that the same time last year. Cows traded from $61.58-$82.87 averaging $73.11 down $0.26 from last week and $6.55 stronger than year ago prices. Auction markets all reported active trading with prices steady. There were 4,195 replacement cattle sold through auction markets down 30% from last week and 27% less than this time last year. Auction market reports were mixed this week. Calves and top quality cattle were reported as steady on strong demand while yearlings and second cut cattle were reported as under pressure. Actual average prices this week saw steers under 500 lbs up down $1.83, 500-600 lbs down $3.66, 600-700 lbs up $4.02, 700-800 lbs up $4.70, 800-900 lbs up $5.23 and steers over 900 lbs averaged $0.41 lower than last week’s average prices. Heifers under 400 lbs averaged $1.78 lower, 400-500 lbs up $4.64, 500-600 lbs down $1.53, 600-700 lbs up $1.17, 700-800 lbs down $3.28 and heifers over 800 lbs averaged $1.24 lower than last week. Ontario rail grade prices declined as the week progressed. Steers started out the reporting week at $196.00$201.00 dressed down to $194.00-$200.00 by mid week. Heifers followed the same trend starting out at $195.00$201.00 dressed down to $193.00-$199.00 by mid week. This week’s average prices are $2.50 lower than last week and $5.50 stronger than the same time last year. The Quebec Electronic Market reported for this week ranged from $193.00-$194.00 dressed (F.O.B. the feedlot) which is down $3.57 on average from last week. Alberta direct trade for this week saw prices average $4.50-$5.50 lower than last week. Steers sold from $184.50$185.75 flat rail while heifers sold at $110.00 live and $184.50 flat rail. U.S. cash cattle was light to moderate in the south on Tuesday with prices $3.00 lower at $122.00 live. On Wednesday, light to moderate trade in the north was under pressure with prices $8.00-$9.00 lower from $193.00$194.00 dressed. Light trade in the south was another dollar lower at $121.00 live. A few clean up deals today were steady to Wednesday, otherwise, the market was quiet.
