2012/13 Jr. FIRST LEGO League: Super Seniors What is Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr. FLL)? FIRST stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”. LEGO Group partnered with FIRST to create a S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) program combining creativity with learning. Geared for students ages 6 to 9, Jr. FLL teams will learn about real-world challenges facing today’s scientists. The 2012 Jr. FLL season is called Super Seniors Challenge. Jr. FLL teams will explore the topic of aging by learning about the obstacles some people face as they get older. Teams will create a Show Me Poster and a LEGO Model (with a motorized component) to represent their findings. Students will learn how to work as a team and present their work during a Jr. FLL Exhibition. Jr. FLL team members will learn the FIRST Credo of “gracious professionalism” and apply the Jr. FLL Core Values in all aspects of their teamwork. To learn more about Jr. FLL, go to: http://www.vadcfll.org/junior_league.html

Who can join Oak Hill’s Jr. FLL teams? Participation is open to current 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders. Teams will be formed during the month of December. This PTA-sponsored program will provide the Jr. FLL teams with the key materials needed to prepare for exhibition including the Jr. FLL Base kit, budget for Show Me Poster materials and team shirts. The PTA takes care of all the registration fees including FIRST team registration fee and FIRST exhibition participant fees. An Oak Hill FLL team consists of 6 students. Each FLL Team must have at least two parent coaches (read the next question about parent coaching).

What is a Jr. FLL parent coach? Coaching requires no special skills, just patience and a willingness to guide the team. No engineering skills are necessary. The coach will provide structure and encouragement but DOES NOT provide the solution to the challenge. The Jr. FLL Parent Coach Handbook will be provided for your reference. The PTA Robotics Coordinators and the VA/DC FLL organization can provide support and guidance to parent coaches, as needed. Parents interested in this Parent Coach role should indicate their interest on the PTA registration site. For questions, send an email to [email protected].

What is the time commitment for Jr. FLL participants? We encourage all teams to start meeting as soon as their team is formed. We recommend that team members and coaches dedicate at least 1 hour a week to work on their Jr. FLL Challenge. Meeting duration may change depending on the team’s goals. Parent coaches, with input from the parents of the team members, will decide on the team’s meeting schedule. Teams can choose to attend a Jr. FLL Exhibition in March 2013.

LANTERN FESTIVAL Thursday, February 21, 2013

to celebrate the new lunar year!

Bronze Award Project Troop #6971 Juniors The girls of our troop have decided that they would like to aid those in need in the Metro area for their bronze award effort. To achieve this goal, we decided to assemble personal supply bags for our target population. We will be supplying toiletries and non-perishable snack items, assemble the bags and hand them out. The items that we describe below meet needs that may not necessarily be addressed by the charities that provide meals and food. We encourage everyone to consider items which are specific to men, women, boys and girls. It's not much, but it's something! Thank you in advance from the Leaders and Juniors of Troop #6971! Here are suggestions for items that we are considering for the bags:       

Deodorant Toothbrush / Toothpaste Bar of Soap small pop-top cans of tuna or chicken salad, single serving peanut butter Wool Socks Hat and Gloves (winter season) Gallon-Sized Sealable Bags

Here are suggestions regarding how to supply the items:    

Go to the Dollar Store or the travel section at the grocery store and buy travel-sized toiletries. Use hotel toiletry samples or dental samples that you brought home from vacation or the dentist’s. Request extra dental samples from your dentist at your next appointment. Visit one of the warehouse stores for bulk non-perishable food items or suggested clothing items.

Collecting until March 15, 2013. Thank you, Troop #6971
