BTCC RABBIT TRAILS Wednesday, December 7, 2016 DOWN THE RABBIT TRAIL “The kids won’t remember those $200 Nikes you bought last Christmas, but they’ll remember that camping trip the family took together 10 years ago.” ~~~~

Dan Goar

When I was just a little hardheaded cowboy, my family would spend Christmas at O.R. Crow’s (my grandfather) farm house. It was a 3 bedroom, 1 bath, 1700sq ft. house with a screened in porch in Luther, Texas. On Christmas Eve, my uncles, aunts, and the cousins would all arrive sometime during the day. When everyone was there, the house would be chocked-full with 8 kids and 8 adults for the next 24 hours. After supper, the dominoes and cards would come out and the party would begin. The kids would be in the den sitting next to the electric fire place with genuine ersatz flames and watching a TV that was mainly snow with some images moving around. Hot chocolate and marshmallows were the after supper dessert of the day. Grandmother Crow would always have a gargantuan illuminated plastic Santa looking through the glass front door at the snowman family she made from tumble weeds that lined the fence rows in the fall. That night, we would put milk and cookies out for Santa in the kitchen and go to sleep on the den floor under my grandmother’s handmade quilts. To this day, I really can’t remember one present brought by Santa. But, I can still clearly remember the family, the love, and the good times we had. The total cost of those great memories was a little time and love.

Today, we, as Americans, have big houses with nice furniture, big TVs with pictures clearer than real life, nice cars that can almost drive themselves and video games that are almost like real life. But in time the furniture wears out, the TV becomes outdated, the cars breakdown, and the video games are replaced by a newer and more violent version. All these items we pay such an extravagant price for and yet get very little or no lasting pleasure from them. Why are we paying such a high price for a low and unfulfilled life? Have we replaced God with the fleeting pleasures of this world? God has monetarily blessed Americans beyond belief. But, we are letting those possessions destroy families and push out the very God that blessed us in the first place. In the insignificant amount of time it takes to hug a family member, or listen to our children, or just say, “I love you”, will create an everlasting and wholesome memory that can never be superseded with the fruitless hours we spend with our material possessions. The true and unconditional love offered to us by God permeates every corner of our lives and lasts forever.

Proverbs 15:17 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it. 1 Corinthians 13:13 There are three things that remain—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.
