Web‐based Learning Platform Instructions 

 

2.0 USING THE GEOSPATIAL SOFTWARE AND ACCESSING LAB DATA Once opened, the geospatial software program will appear as if it is running from your desktop,  however it is actually operating through the UTM server and you will need to learn how to access the  lab data through this network. Each assignment will come with files that you need to complete the  exercise. Follow the instructions below to locate the lab data. Separate detailed instructions will be  provided for each individual lab assignment.    

NOTE: Only open one geospatial/remote sensing software at a time. Opening more than one  program can decrease its operation speed for yourself as well as others. If you are using  ArcGIS, you will need to wait three minutes after closing the window to open the software  again.   

 



2.1 Copying Data Before beginning the assignment, you will need to copy the data from the UTM server to your own folder  hosted on the network.      Login to xenweb.utm.utoronto.ca and click on ‘File Explorer’

       Enter \\medusa in the address bar and the ‘Courses’ and ‘StudentWork’ folders will appear  o You will need to copy the lab data from the ‘Courses’ folder to your UTORid folder inside the  ‘StudentWork’ folder 

   The easiest way to do this is to have two file explorer windows open (click on the ‘File Explorer’ icon  again to open another window)     Double click on ‘Courses’ and select your course folder and the lab folder corresponding to your lab  assignment (e.g., GGR375 > Exercise 1)

In the other File Explorer window, double‐click on ‘StudentWork’ and open the folder named  with your UTORid 

 

       Under the ‘Courses’ folder, highlight all the data from the assignment folder, right‐click and select ‘Copy’     Move to your UTORid folder in the ‘StudentWork’ folder, right–click on an empty space and select  ‘Paste’  o Double‐check that all the files have been copied over     

2.2 Using Software Programs through the Platform While the programs may appear as if they are running from your desktop, they are actually operating  through the online platform (i.e. through your browser). Occasionally, you may experience a lag in the  refresh time which is normal. Ensure you give yourself enough time to complete the assignments and  remember to save your work regularly.    

ERDAS Imagine 2013  From the main Applications folder select:   To access the lab data you just copied into your UTORid folder from within ERDAS, use the universal  path: \\medusa\StudentWork\(UTORid). You will need to set this as a default directory in ERDAS   Select File > Preferences

   Under “Default Data Directory” and “Default Output Directory” input the universal path provided  above, using your own UTORid  o Click ‘Save’ and then ‘Close’   Next select File > Open, and it should automatically direct you to the default directory you just set   

 

                   

ArcMap 10.2     From the main Applications folder select:     

 Select the “Add Data” button    

 In the window that appears, select the “Folder Connections” button   Type in the universal path (\\medusa\StudentWork and click OK   The ‘Add Data’ window should now open to your UTORid folder  o Select the appropriate folder of the lab contents you just copied and follow your lab  assignment instructions   The location should now appear in the drop‐down menu under “Folder Connections”   o This location will be remembered for subsequent ArcMap sessions

2.3 Uploading Documents to Blackboard Using the internet explorer application at xenweb.utm.utoronto.ca you can upload documents directly from  your student work folder on medusa (\\medusa\Student Work\UTORid) to Blackboard.             Clicking on the internet explorer icon at xenweb.utm.utoronto.ca will launch the application window.

 If you go to the Blackboard home page you may see the following error stating that browser cookies are  disabled. To fix the cookies error, click the gear in the upper right corner of internet explorer, click on  internet options and go to the privacy tab. Adjust the slider so that it says “Medium High”.

 Once this is done you will be able to operate and access Blackboard normally.    Once you have navigated to the submission page for the assignment, click on “Browse My Computer”. 

 This will open the “Choose File to Upload” screen. From here enter in \\medusa to navigate to the  medusa screen where you can access your student  work folder and select files to upload.

2.4 Some Important Points At the end of every session, please return to xenweb.utm.utoronto.ca and log off  For every new online session that you want to initiate, you will need to go xenweb.utm.utoronto.ca  and log in each time (and log off once finished)  o When you are working remotely, and logged in, the Citrix Receiver will automatically terminate  your session after a prolonged period of inactivity – this is to help maintain the speed of the  connection for active users. Therefore:   Always log off when taking breaks and as soon as you have finished your work   Save your work regularly  o o
