Weaving Geography into Your Classroom

GeoConference 2012 is scheduled for Saturday, September 8, 2012 It will be held at Scottsdale Community College, 9000 East Chaparral Road, Scottsdale. SCC is located just off the east 101 at Chaparral. Time: 8:00 am to 3:00 pm This year’s conference, our 19th, is all about Weaving Geography into the Classroom. As elementary or as secondary teachers, we are asked to integrate geography since few of us have a “stand alone” geography class. Therefore, we are interested in GeoCivics, GeoHistory, GeoNomics, GeoArt, Geography as Science, Geography in Music, and even GeoPhysEd. So please volunteer to share one of your favorite geography lessons with others who might not be as adept as you at integrating geography into the classroom. After all, we know that geography is the center of the curriculum! We are also featuring a Technology strand – that is, using technology in the classroom as well as GeoSpatial technology (what is it, how can you use it, why is it important?) We would love to see lessons or demonstrations built using: • • • •

Google – docs, lit, maps, earth Dipity Smart phone applications iPad

• • • • •

eBooks GIS GPS Geocaching And many more!!!

In addition, we invite the TCs currently working in the TFP Summer Project to present one of their new lessons. An invitation to present is attached. We would like to thank Dr. Erin Saffell for making contact with SCC’s Dr. Paul Weser to make arrangements for the SCC Facilities when Mesa Community College became unavailable to AzGA due to construction.

We would like to also thank Dr. Nicole Cerveny for arranging a raffle item – a small Navajo weaving. The GeoLiteracy lesson “Goat in the Rug” inspired her to make arrangements for this donation – and for the theme of this year’s GeoConference!

Partnerships On March 16, via list serve, TCs were invited to participate in the ASU Mary Lou Fulton Teacher’s College (MLFTC) Teaching Foundations Project (TFP). This $30,000 project is being funded by MLFTC which is contracting with AzGA and TCs to produce 36 content lessons (geography/American history/civics) and 52 short video presentations on how to teach these and other AzGA lessons. This project started in April and will be concluded by August 2012.

No funds come directly to AzGA. The benefit to the organization is that the lessons and presentations will be available from the AzGA website as well as from one that will be developed by TFP. Gale Ekiss is acting as the AzGA Program Director. The following Teacher Consultants are participants: Heather Moll Cheryl Wiens Jeannine Kuropatkin Dennis Rees Carol Warren

Kelli Jones Sheila Nice Karen Guerrero Tricia Hutchinson

Jessica Medlin John Halverson Diane Godfrey Sara Jenkins

TL3C for Language Learners: Teachers of Language Learners (TLL) Learning Community Last year, TC Karen Guerrero, with support from her colleagues at Mesa Community College wrote a five year, $2 million dollar Department of Education grant proposal to impact pre-service and in-service teachers by providing training and content-rich material for ELLs. The grant was recently funded. Consortia Partners with Mesa Community College include Arizona State University, Arizona Geographic Alliance, Gilbert Unified School District, Mesa Public School District, Kyrene School District, and Roosevelt School District. In this five year period, using funding from the grant, AzGA will be will be recruiting TCs (and others) to 9 create, pilot and assess 50 STEM geography lessons 9 conduct summer institutes 9 present at workshops Everything gets moving this fall. Stay tuned!

The AzGA Endowment Fund Tale This spring, AzGA learned that an Endowment Fund has been created for us. As the story goes, on January 8, 2011, Gale Ekiss, Malcolm Comeaux, Cathy Davis and Dennis Rees met with NGS Chairman of the Board Emeritus, Gil Grosvenor, in Tucson. After that meeting, Mr. Grosvenor persuaded an individual living in Tucson to begin an AzGA endowment from his family foundation. While this endowment is in its “infancy,” it can (and should) be added to. There is no limit to how large the “baby” can grow with food and watering. Many states have $1 million endowments raised in pieces as we will do. Therefore, growing this fund will be a focus for us during the next few years. In case you are wondering, the money is held at NGS, for AzGA. Sorry, no personal loans allowed!
