Weather Fifth Grade - Tricia Prevette Essential Question ? What makes weather wet and wild? Secondary Questions ? What is the water cycle? How do clouds form? How does the ocean effect weather and climate? How does global atmospheric movement patterns relate to local weather? Objectives Science - Goal 4 The learner will build an understanding of weather and climate. Objective 4.01 Analyze the water cycle: - Precipitation. -Ground water. Objective 4.02 Analyze the formation of clouds and their relation to weather systems. Objective 4.03 Relate global atmospheric movement patterns to local weather. Objective 4.04 Compile weather data to establish climate trends. Objective 4.05 Evaluate oceans' effect on weather and climate. Real World Connections A local meteorologist will come and talk to the students. The students will use what they learn throughout to make realistic predictions about the weather.

Activities Make our own mini water cycle Cloud flip book Make weather instruments Collect data in weather journal daily for two weeks Create a “Weather Channel” broadcast *Activities should be combined with instruction from different books* Activity #1 Title : Understanding the Water Cycle Objectives Addressed : Science Objective 4.01 Analyze the water cycle: - Precipitation. -Ground water Materials Needed : white drawing paper a large plastic bowl cling wrap a weight a smaller container rubber band internet access Approximate Time Needed : one to two class periods Activity Description : Describe the water cycle to the students and have them draw the water cycle. Next, visit http://www.kids.organics.org/exp002.htm. This website will describe in detail how to create your own mini water cycle with the students to help them better understand the water cycle. Have the students predict what will happen to the water in the bowl. Observe daily and have the students describe what is happening to the water.

Activity #2 Title : Cloud Formation Objectives Addressed : Science Objective 4.02 Analyze the formation of clouds and their relation to weather systems. Materials Needed : pictures from the Internet of the different cloud types construction paper pencils Approximate Time Needed : one to two class periods Activity Description : Each student will need to create two five tab books. To create the five tab book use the following instructions: 1. Fold a sheet of paper like a hot dog 2. With the paper horizontal and the fold of the hot dog up, fold the paper into five equal sections. 3. Cut along the folds (only half way up) so that you can lift the fold. Your book should look similar to this (but yours should have 5 tabs instead of 3) (foldable picture came from Dinah Zyke’s website)

4. Paste the two flip books back to back so that you have 10 tabs in all. 5. Put the cloud names on the outside of the flip book in order from the highest clouds to the lowest. 6. On the left inside flap the students will need to paste a picture of that type of cloud to the flip book. A good website for the students to use for the pictures is http://www.weatherwizkids.com/cloud.htm 7. The students will need to research each type of cloud. On the right inside the students will need to give information on that type of cloud. They need to be sure to include what that specific cloud type indicates. For example, cirrus clouds indicate that a change in weather will occur in the next 24 hours. (the same website that they got the pictures

from is a good website to get information from) Activity #3 Title : Making Weather Instruments and Recording Findings Objectives Addressed : Science Objective 4.04 Compile weather data to establish climate trends. Materials Needed : weather instrument worksheets *instrument directions *wind scale template *wind man pattern Approximate Time Needed : one 45 minute period and then 10 minutes for the next two weeks to record findings in weather journal Activity Description : The students will get into teacher designated groups to make the weather instruments. Once the students have made their weather instruments, they will place them in the appropriate places and, daily for the next two weeks, they will record their findings in the weather journal and make predictions for the following days . The students should be sure to use their cloud tab book they made in activity #2 to identify the types of clouds and make predictions accordingly. *note : a thermometer can be made or you can just purchase one. Instructions to make a thermometer are available on the following website : http://www.spl.usace.army.mil/so/images/WeatherInstruments.pdf

Activity #4 - Final Product/Presentation Title : Weather Channel Broadcast Objectives Addressed : All Goal 4 Science Objectives Materials Needed : camera big map of the United States Approximate Time Needed : approximately two class periods Activity Description : Students will work in groups to put together a “weather channel broadcast”. The students will be responsible for the script, the props, the cameras, etc. The final product will be shown on morning announcements. *note : you can break your students into groups and have each group put on a broadcast or you can break students into groups and have them work where you know they will succeed. For example, if you have a student who is very creative and enjoys art, you may have them to create the props for the broadcast. (Just make sure all students have input into every aspect of the broadcast)
