Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services offers the following tips to care for your real Christmas tree this holiday season: • If you can’t set up your tree immediately, put it in a bucket of water in a cool, shady place. • Cut off a half inch from the base of the tree before placing it in a stand.

• Use a stand that will hold at least a gallon of water. • Check the water levels often. A tree may take up to a gallon of water in the first 24 hours, and a quart per day after that. • If your tree stops drinking water, it is most likely because sap has built up around the trunk. To correct this, drain the water in the stand and pour very hot, boiling water in the stand. It will remove the sap build up and allow the tree to begin drinking water. • Place tree away from heat sources, such as heating vents, fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators and sunny windows. • Check lights and cords for broken bulbs and frayed wiring. • Do not overload electrical circuits. • Turn off lights before leaving home or going to bed.

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.
