Urban computer controlled calf feeders adapt to match each animal’s biological clock

Each animal is given the desired quantity of milk, divided into several portions spread throughout the day. The calf feeding machine also checks whether the calves have taken their portions at the right times. The desired amount of milk is freshly mixed and raised to the correct temperature. Further the animals’ speed of feeding is recorded. If changes occur in the normal flow of milk for a particular animal the machine warns the farmer, giving him the chance to combat an illness while it is still in the early stages of development.

Simple, maintenance-free and faultfree dosing of the milk powder

One important feature is the robust powder bag for the milk replacer in every Urban calf feeder. This practical solution means that the use of agitators can be dispensed with, since the powder always slides forward by itself. Compared with rigid containers this means that rotating parts are no longer needed. The powder bag is simpler to work with, is wear-free and above all works trouble-free.

Mixing bowl heating as standard

All Urban mixing bowls are provided with a heating system - even the basic versions. Types U20 and U30 have electric heating. This means that the mix container always has a constant mixing bowl temperature. Other types of feeder systems can cool down between times, which results in the heated water immediately cooling down a little. If the precise desired temperature is not reached then of course the powder may not dissolve properly.

Precise measurement of the amount of any remaining milk

All Urban calf feeders measure the precise amount of remaining milk which a calf has not drunk. This means the farmer can immediately see how much milk a calf has not drunk. Other types of feeder systems only measures whether the container is full or empty. Further the milk in the heated mixing bowl stays at the same temperature level whilst other types of feeder systems feed the next calf with milk which has cooled down.

Trend-setting cleaning

All Urban computer controlled calf feeders have automatic mix container cleaning with an alternating programme for acid and alkaline detergent. For whole milk operation a stainless steel heat exchanger and a fully automatic cleaning system (acid/alkaline) are built in as standard.

The machine learns to recognise calves

Each calf has its own individual drinking speed. Urban computer controlled calf feeders record and store this characteristic for each calf. Entry-level unit and extension

The Urban U30 was included in the large Urban range as an inexpensive entry-level model. It can be easily and safely set up for smaller farms but can also be extended e.g. by adding two stations for supplying up to 50 (2 x 25) calves.

Precise dosage of additives

Urban offers dosers for both powder and liquid additives. There is also the opportunity to use a specially developed electrolytes programme. The powder additives can be given to each animal individually. The powder doser is easy to clean. It can be retrofitted at any time since the modular design of the machines means that the plug is already present.

New alarm function

Our automatic calf feeders are now fitted with a new, dynamic alarm function which records a number of parameters. Drinking speed, length of stay in the station, interrupted station visits and remaining milk. Combining the recorded data gives a much more precise picture for each calf than a simple review of the separate values.

No milk theft

The record of the volume of milk for each animal and a milk theft valve together effectively prevent milk theft amongst calves, caused by the stronger animals. This leads to greater calm in the calves’ group stall.

Networking

The Urban feed computer at one automatic calf feeding machine can be used to control several networked machines. All three Urban automatic calf feeders provide the opportunity to feed concentrate feed, controlled by transponder.

Individual setting for each animal

An individual mixture can be programmed for each calf, e.g. whole milk only for bull calves or a mixture of whole milk and milk substitute.

Urban U 40 Computer controlled calf feeder

The Urban U40 automatic calf feeder has been developed as a top range model for larger farms. It is the only model which has a closed loop. Thus suction hoses, mixing bowl and whole milk heat exchanger etc can be cleaned entirely automatically. The closed loop means that milk at the correct temperature is always available for drawing down from the teat. This means that a manual drinking aid can therefore be dispensed with. The U40 injects the liquid medicine directly into the suction line. Pressing a button allows milk at the correct temperature (e.g. for calves in outside boxes) quickly and simply drawn

for the U 20 / U 30 / U 40 Urban K 20 Concentrate feeding station for calves The Urban K20 concentrate feeding station is the simple and proven way to accustom the calves ad libitum to the concentrate feed and to provide them with it. Trough and hopper are designed so that with the aid of an impeller mechanism the trough is given only the amount of feed which the calves should eat. This means that the concentrate feed is always dry and fresh. Formation of mold and loss of feed can be avoided with this system. Reduction of the liquid feed with increasing age of the animals leads to the desired, increased intake of concentrate feed.

Lockable feeding station The lockable feeding station can also be retrofitted as a kit and allows the calves an undisturbed intake of feed.

Urban PC link The Urban PC link allows rapid data transfer from the feeding computer on the calf feeder to the PC in the farmer’s office. This avoids entering data twice and prevents typing errors from creeping in.

One new feature in the programme is the colostrum container. For this an additional container is suspended in the milk mixer and the colostrum is kept warm. This means that it is always at the correct temperature and cannot scald. Urban offers a battery pump for points of use without power supply. This means that the milk which is already at the correct temperature can be dosed simply and quickly at every point on the farm.

Thanks to the large, pneumatic or rubber tired wheels the Urban calf milk mixer can be moved around quickly and easily. The battery pump can be used to precisely dose the pre-warmed feed milk in the calves’ feed bucket. For the very young animals Urban now offers a new colostrum container: A small, stainless steel container is suspended in the milk tank. This keeps the colostrum at an optimum temperature too.

The appropriate equipment

The new clear price list allows farmers to individually select the desired equipment for their Urban calf milk mixer at their dealers. The thermometer is also a good idea, since it shows the exact temperature of the mixed milk.

Urban Calf Hutches Single calf rearing

Urban calf hutches provide the newborn calves with optimal conditions in their first days of life. In the single hutch each calf has its own individual area and yet still has contact with the other animals in the neighbouring hutches. They can be easily watched when feeding. If signs of illness appear countermeasures can be taken straight away. Rearing the calves in the Urban single hutch is the best basis for their later rearing in groups.

The material is light and yet stable. It is insensitive to UV radiation, heat or cold. At the same time the UV rays eliminate harmful germs and bacteria and thus make a contribution to the health of the animals. The white surface of the polyester deflects the UV rays and thus prevents the hutch from heating up. This is specially important in hot summers.

Long service life

The hutches are produced in one form and are free of cracks and splits. This avoids drafts and prevents respiratory illnesses. And there are no opportunities for infectious agents to establish themselves there.

The Urban calf hutches have proven themselves suitable for outdoor rearing. They are fabricated from fibreglassstrengthened polyester and have a very long service life.

Single rearing of calves

Good air circulation

The shape of the calf hutch is decisive for ventilation without creating drafts. Fresh outside air enters the hutch from below, bringing in oxygen. It warms up a little inside the hutch and then rises upwards. In doing so it takes the used air and the humidity with it and then flows out through the frontal air outlets. This air circulation keeps the hutch dry and provides an optimum climate for the young animals.

Special coating

The smooth internal and external surfaces are dirtrepellent and easy to clean. On the inside the fibreglassstrengthened polyester is coated with a special gel. This protects the glass fibres and makes cleaning with the high pressure cleaner easier.

Practical to use

Urban calf hutches with external grill are easy to set up. The light weight of the fibreglass-strengthened polyester means that one person can move a single hutch without effort. If the hutch is opened up the whole unit can be moved easily on its solid wheels. The removable front grid can be used to block the calf inside the hutch. Mucking out the hutches with the loader is easy when the hutches are opened up.

Rearing the calves outside the warm, humid stalls has proven itself over many years. After the animals have been reared in their first days of life in the single hutch the Urban system is ideal for the later group rearing.

Wellness for calves

The Urban system can be quickly and simply set up at any farm. A concrete surface is sufficient to provide the “base”. It provides the calves with adequate space, divided into lying area, feeding area and pen. The pen can be kept clean with a minimum of effort. The feeding and lying areas are roofed over. The calves therefore always lie in the warm and dry.

Saving in working time

In the Urban calf group rearing system good air circulation is always present. The hollow chamber profiles of the side walls protect against radiated cold from the outside. At the same time they don’t warm up, something which can happen with large-scale hutches. Additional roofs are not required. The plastic walls have a smooth surface and are easy to clean. Generally the bacterial load is very low. Mucking out the lying area is quite simple and quick using either the front loader or the yard loader. The concentrate feeder and/or the calf feeder can be efficiently set up in the feeding area. And the high-quality silage is placed at the diagonal feeding grid. This means that the calves become quite accustomed to the conditions which they will later find in the pen as high yield cows.
