Hackathon concept_ Industryhack’s hackathons are open innovation challenges hosted by a single company. The hackathons are organised to make meaningful connections and develop proof-of-concepts resulting in follow-up projects between the host and winning teams. Participants apply as teams of 2-3 people, and usually only 10-15 best teams are selected to participate. The participants get access to data and resources 2-3 weeks before the hackathon. Hackathons always include an excursion to the host’s relevant facilities. Usually the hackathon happens on site but a remote location is also possible. Co-creation together with the host’s staff is important part of the concept, and many times we see about 20 host staff members taking part in the hackathon.

Who participates Industryhacks? Industryhack attracts talented and experienced developer teams from software companies, tech startups and other big companies. According to our survey for participants: - 74% of our participants have over 5 years of experience as a developer. - 68% got encouraged to participate the hackathon by their employer - 40% got paid by their employer to participate the hackathon

Technology partners_ We have partnered up with some of the leading technology companies and startups to provide access to latest tools, services and technologies. Our partners provide their tech available for our participants for free, and make it possible to use resources not available otherwise. They have also helped to provide some of the data and resources related to the challenges.

Case example: Fortum_ Energy company Fortum has over 200 power plants, many of which are un-manned. Their 2nd hackathon focused on analysing and visualising data from power plants to prevent and predict maintenance breaks, control plants remotely and respond to urgent market changes. After the hackathon, the company has continued development with 4 teams. “Industryhack helps us to develop ideas and create new products faster.” - Pekka Lundmark, CEO of Fortum

Case example: Ponsse_ Harvester manufacturer Ponsse wanted to reach out to external developer teams and accelerate their efforts in creating value adding digital services for their customers. The company hosted 11 teams at their factory in Vieremä, Finland in March, 2016. Since then, Ponsse has continued to work on pilot projects together with three teams that participated. “Industryhack is a good platform for making radical moves in developing our products.” - Juho Nummela, CEO of Ponsse

Case example: Lassila & Tikanoja_ Finland’s biggest recycling company Lassila & Tikanoja hosted a hackathon to build relationships with developers and find fresh ideas for their digital R&D. The company continued working with the hackathon winner, team SC5, and have developed the idea from pilot into a full-supported product that now brings revenue to Lassila & Tikanoja. “The hackathon was our kick-off for building long-term partnerships with external developers ” - Pekka Ojanpää, CEO of Lassila & Tikanoja
