RACE MANUAL

WE ARE SOCIAL... thetourcycling @thetourcycling thewomenstour @thewomenstour #AvivaWT2015 WOMENSTOUR.CO.UK

THE AVIVA WOMEN’S TOUR 2015 It gives me great pleasure to welcome to you to the second edition of the Aviva Women’s Tour. The 2014 edition of the race was an astounding success bringing the world’s top riders to Britain and massive crowds out to the roadside despite not always enjoying the best weather. We set out to establish a world leading event and to prove that the appetite and support for an international women’s stage race existed in Britain, and we have to thank all of our partners and stakeholders who made last year possible. Moving forward to 2015 and we now enjoy a new look and the support of Aviva, Britain’s largest insurance company, who share our passion to take this event to continued new heights. We also welcome the return of a whole host of partners and some significant new arrivals, in Chain Reaction Cycles, the world’s biggest online bike store who partner the Points Jersey and Premier Inn, the UK’s largest hotel brand, will present the Best British Rider Jersey. 2015 will see further developments to the Aviva Women’s Tour: • We start the race with an evening team presentation in the historic town of Bury St Edmunds, which hosts the Grand Depart the following morning and of course hosted the Grand Finale in front of huge crowds on Angel Hill in 2014. • Every stage town will be hosting sports festivals encouraging young women in particular to engage in more physical activity, with the athletes from the Aviva Women’s Tour being promoted as role models to these young people. We will this year also see increased support from schools all along the route, all of whom have been researching the race and its teams.

CONTENTS

• Following requests from many riders we have also extended the length of several of our stages and worked with the UCI to do this. • Last year saw daily coverage on ITV4 in Great Britain where we attracted half a million TV viewers for each stage. This year coverage has been moved forward to the prime-time slot of 8pm with one hour of coverage each evening. I am also absolutely delighted to say that Eurosport will now broadcast a one hour summary of the race in most European countries – this is another major step forward for us in our development of women’s cycling. The race will take place over ideal roads for racing with the final stage through the Chiltern Hills providing a sting in the tail and we feel sure that the overall general classification will only be decided in the final few metres of the five days: • Stage 1 sees the race commence in Bury St Edmunds and traverse much of the beautiful county of Suffolk, finishing on the seafront of one of Britain’s most picturesque seaside towns – Aldeburgh, which welcomes the race for the first time. • Our second stage starts in a new venue, Braintree in Essex, through which the Tour de France passed in 2014, and finishes in Clacton passing through some glorious countryside in Essex and Suffolk. • On the third day we return to the town of Oundle, which surpassed everyone’s aspirations last year when they hosted the Grand Depart. The stage will traverse right across Northamptonshire with the stage finish being in Kettering. At 140km this is where we will see the contenders for the final GC start to make their presence felt.

• Our penultimate stage starts in Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire and finishes in Stevenage – this stage features challenging, undulating roads and we once again expect huge crowds hoping to catch a glimpse of their local hero Laura Trott. • The final stage starts in Marlow, alongside the River Thames, and winds its way through the challenging terrain of the Chiltern Hills finishing in Hemel Hempstead, which hosted a finish of the men’s Tour of Britain in 2014. Finally I would like to thank the many supporting organisations and stakeholders who make this race possible: the local authority partners who have invested so much time and effort into making this race special; our many sponsors and suppliers who have demonstrated their commitment to the continued development of women’s cycling and of course all the volunteers, staff, officials and contractors without whose time and effort the race would not be such a success. On behalf of SweetSpot I wish everyone a great race!
