Dec. 19-Jan. 3 Christmas Break

December 1, 2015 I hope everyone had a peaceful Thanksgiving. Thanks to all of our students and families who supported our canned food drive. We sent boxes of food to the Mt. Healthy Food Alliance. The Lord said, “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40 Your generosity and kindness fed needy families during this season of Thanksgiving. Thank you! TIME IS RUNNING OUT to give a donation to our Tuition Assistance Program! Schools and parishes have the opportunity to receive additional ESAP Matching Funds by participating in the Matching Program. When ESAP receives donations for the benefit of JPII before Dec. 10, 2015, ESAP will match those gifts at a rate of 150% to a maximum of $15,000. (Ex. Parish Donation $3,000, ESAP Match of $4,500; Total of $7,500.) This past year we received $24,000 toward financial assistance. Currently, we are marked to receive $18,000. This is $6,000 lower than this past year. It is not too late to donate! Ask grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, and employers to donate. All donations go to JPII families. Please consider helping us keep Catholic education affordable for all families. Form is attached to make your donation. In advance thank you for supporting Catholic education. We are now in the season of Advent. What is Advent? Advent, a season of preparation for Christmas. Christians prepare for celebrating the birth of Jesus by remembering the longing of the Jews for a Messiah. In Advent, we’re reminded of how much we ourselves also need a Savior, and we look forward to our Savior’s second coming even as we prepare to celebrate his first coming at Christmas. The word “Advent” comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “coming” or “visit.” In the season with this name, we keep in mind both “advents” of Christ, the first in Bethlehem and the second yet to come. Advent is meant to get us ready, not for a present‐opening party, but for a transformational celebration of the birth of Jesus. You will find attached information about Advent and a daily calendar of activities that will help prepare for the coming of Jesus. At JPII, the students and staff celebrates the Advent season by preparing our hearts for the coming of the Christ child. In preparing our hearts, each classroom will be sponsoring an elderly individual. The children will bring in a donation toward a gift as well as make cards for this person. This time of year is always very busy at JPII with many different activities that consume the next three weeks. The band students have been working on a short musical concert for the holiday season. These students invite you to the concert on Dec. 9th at 7 pm in the cafeteria. In addition to the band concert, the students in kindergarten through 3rd graders are working on a special Christmas concert that will bring the true meaning of Christmas to our families. On Wednesday, Dec. 16th at 7 pm in the church will

be a show you will not want to miss. More details regarding how the students should dress and what time they are to be at school for the performance will come from your child’s teacher. The 4th graders and Mrs. Woodall are preparing a prayer service which will retell the Nativity Story. Everyone is welcome to attend our prayer service on Dec. 18th at 9:30 am. Next Friday, Dec. 11th, the Student Council will be hosting Santa Sitters for kindergarteners through grade 3. Santa Sitters will take place from 3:30 – 7 pm in the cafeteria. This is an opportunity for parents to shop without the kids! The students will enjoy pizza, games and Christmas fun. Permission slips and more details about the evening will be sent home with the students next week. Random Acts of Kindness Campaign: This year our school theme of loving one another was kicked off on the feast of John Paul II. Our RAK campaign has expanded beyond the Cincinnati area to Kentucky, Texas, and Australia. Our students have raked leaves, made brownies for neighbors and cupcakes for the police department, and voluntarily helped unload a car in the rain. Our acts of kindness are reaching both near and far. In keeping with this theme, out 8th graders are required to do 5 hours of service per trimester for their religion class. In total, the students completed 1226.75 hours of service! They were only required to do 5, but about half of the students did more than 5. A few did over 60 hours! They did a lot of different things (babysitting for free, raking leaves, cleaning the house, helping grandparents), but below are just a few of the more interesting/different activities that some students did: • • • • • • • • • •

Volunteer at VBS this summer, or at parish festivals Working at baseball/softball tournaments Working with the Stray Animal Adoption Program Serving meals for homeless Mission trip to Nicaragua Volunteering at Taylor Mill's End of Summer Festival Matthew 25 Ministries Cleaning up Mill Creek Volunteering with Young Marines Volunteering to lead service projects here at JPII

And the list goes on with a variety of service projects! Our students are living examples of what it means to spread God’s love to others!

In keeping with our theme, the JPII staff and I will be volunteering this Saturday at Hands Against Hunger or Child’s Hope International. One of the core objectives of Child’s Hope International is to help any vulnerable child regardless of race, culture, faith or ethnic differences. They help all children in the United States as well as other countries. Giving just 2 hours of time will feed 1 child for 1 year. Through working together at the factory, the children we can help is unbelievable. If you haven’t participated in this type of experience, visit the Hope Factory and look for an “Open Session”. The factory is located on East Kemper Rd. in Sharonville. Blanket Donations for the 1st Grade Scouts: The 1st grade Cub Scouts are collecting new blankets for the homeless. Please consider donating a gift of warmth with a new blanket. Blankets can be dropped off in the school lobby this week! JPII Christmas Craft Volunteers: We are in need of volunteers to assist Mrs. Perkins and our 1st, 2nd and 3rd Graders with their 2015 Christmas Craft project. No crafting experience needed. We only ask that you not volunteer for your child's (children's) grade so that the craft/present remains a surprise for Christmas morning! If available, please click here to sign up. World Language: Spanish – 2nd Trimester: We started the trimester introducing the geographic location of Spanish speaking countries. Basic commands, greetings, the date, weather, likes, and dislikes are part of our daily routine.

As the trimester continued, the colors, numbers and food items were added. We started incorporating sign and body language to identify, recognize, and produce new vocabulary with structure in the target language, Spanish. As we enter the second trimester, the students will be able to produce verbal phrases using vocabulary on animals, foods, moods, sizes, and colors they have learned. The main goal is to build the basic vocabulary to start working on stories which is a powerful element on acquiring proficiency in the target language. In regards to culture, the students learned about the origins of “Día de los Muertos”. The second trimester, the students will be familiarized with Christmas celebrations in Latin America, and they will be learning Christmas songs, especially the “Ale Pun Cata Pun” song. Finally, the students will learn about the origins of chocolate. ANOTHER WAY TO SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL: Getting ready for Christmas and need gift cards? Attached you will find a SCRIP order form. If you order your gift cards through SCRIP, you receive the cards and JPII receives a portion of the amount purchased. Please CONSIDER supporting JPII with this no hassle fund raiser. Check out GLSCRIP.com for retailers and denominations to get your order ready. Have a blessed week and remember you are the body of Christ. Let your words and actions spread His love. Mrs. Roach
