Want to know where to go? Chicago is unique among the largest cities in the United States. Open a phone book or search the Internet and you’ll find that no city has as many local bait and tackle shops as we do.We have nine, plus three fly fishing shops, all within the City limits. Fishing is spoken there and the existence, partnership and cooperation of these bait and tackle shops is crucial to the way we fish in Chicago and to our fishing programs. They carry information about all of Mayor Daley’s Fishing programs, events, contests and so much more. Please give them your support. They know local fishing, where the fish are biting, and on what. Give them a call, or better yet, pay them a visit.

“I fish because I love to; because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion; because fish do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience; because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I for one don’t want to waste the trip; because maybe one day I will catch a mermaid; and, finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant - and not nearly so much fun.” - Robert Traver

City of Chicago Richard M. Daley Mayor Chicago Park District Timothy Mitchell General Superintendent Mayor Daley’s Fishing Advisory Committee Tom Gray Chairman

“In this busy, noisy, impatient world, faster often seems better. Many of us wear stress like a badge of honor and take pride in exhaustion. Perhaps we won’t solve these problems by going fishing. But I like to think it can’t hurt.”

"I did it! I did it! I caught a fish!" - Joshua, age 6. His smile was a mile-wide; his eyes sparkled like cut, polished diamonds. Adults should show their joy so unashamedly. We were at Burnham Harbor, near Soldier Field. It was August 2003 and Joshua had just caught his first fish, a plump, six-inch, orange-throated male Bluegill with a sparkling strip of aqua-blue coloration along the edge of his gills. He admired his catch, but he wouldn’t touch it.They all start that way. At the beginning of a fishing session, most of the kids won’t touch anything. By the end of the session, they’re touching everything. Adults should lose their fears so quickly. Fish`N Kids. That’s the name of Mayor Daley’s Fishing Program at the Chicago Park District. That’s what we do: put Fish and Kids together and create some memories. Philosopher Cesare Pavese said, "We do not remember days, we remember moments." Moments and memories: memories and moments. They’re formed for a lifetime when kids go fishing. Perhaps a lifetime’s passion is formed too. Mine was. What will this child remember: the brightness of the sun at noon upon the water; the deep heat of summer warming the soles of the their shoes; the intense orange of a male bluegill’s throat; the coolness of the shade under an Oak or Mulberry tree along a lagoon bank; the wiggle of a fish hanging from the end of a rod; the sound of wind in the trees or water against the pier; the high-pitched screams and giggles of friends as a fish flops on land; the heart-stopping excitement of a red-and-yellow stick bobber slipping beneath the surface; white-hulled sailboats in the harbor bobbing on the waves; the feel of beemoth and redworms wriggling in the hand; the warm voice of a Fishing Instructor saying "Great Job! Good Fish!"; the bounce of gym shoes running hurriedly down a wooden pier; the caw of birds awaiting a donated meal of soft goby; the feel of scales and slime in their hands as they hold a crappie; the slipperiness of a fathead as your try to put it on the hook; the scent of fish on their fingers; the clap of thunder and rush of wind as you sit under a tree awaiting the passage of a summer storm; the lazy motion of the fins on a Rock Bass as he swims captive in a five-gallon bucket; the gap-toothed, wide-eyed, confident smile of success and wonder on a young face? Oh, those are some of my moments, my memories, from the summer of 2003 and all summers before. I’m sure they will be some of theirs too. What about yours?
