Blessing of the Fleet Last Saturday seven Emergency Service vehicles and attendants responded to community thanks with a lap of honour around Walpole’s main streets. The honour was to bless and acclaim them for services well done. The Volunteer Services represented were St John Ambulance, Marine Rescue, Fire and Rescue, Bush Fire Brigade and State Emergency Service Other Emergency Services represented were Walpole Police, Walpole Health Centre (Silver Chain). The Department of Parks and Wildlife intended to be there but had been called out at the time of the ceremony. The community practice of blessing a fishing fleet is well known and Walpole Online records such an event at Peaceful Bay in the 80s (http://walpoleonline.com/about/ place/the-first-blessing-of-thefleet/). Blessing the Emergency Services with a lap of honour began in its current format in 2011. It has become an annual event to coincide with International Volunteer Day.

St John Ambulance Great Southern Regional Manager Cassandra Hughes spoke to commend and acknowledge the vital role of volunteers in the community. Reverend Sue Lodge-Calvert (Anglican Parish Priest DenmarkWalpole) also expressed the community’s gratitude for the work done by the many agencies represented that protect us, rescue us, and bring comfort to a community that lives in a beautiful but remote and vulnerable part of the world. On behalf of the community, Sue also acknowledged the families and friends of those who work in these services and the sacrifice they make in sharing their loved ones with the community. She invited the gathering to observe a minute’s silence to honour those who have died and been injured, and their grieving families and friends. The ceremony concluded with a lap of honour by Emergency Service vehicles led by Walpole Police with lights and sirens, and a blessing by Reverend Sue Lodge Calvert as the vehicles and attendants moved past her.

Sunrise Dance Competition Article and images submitted by Chris Cook, Walpole Primary School Principal. It’s amazing what an incursion does to inspire students. Last Monday, three nervous students approached the Principal of Walpole Primary School and asked if the school could enter a dance competition. Only three days earlier, Claudia Simpson had taught the students a dance routine, one for the younger students and one for the older. They had obviously enjoyed the opportunity and wanted to apply their newly learnt skills in an Australia-wide competition. Of course, the Principal, Chris Cook, could only say yes. The three excited students quickly ran around the school confirming with the other teachers a time to practise. Claudia got word of the competition and was quick to offer her services to fine tune their entry. She worked through the routine with the students, class at a time. After lunch, the whole school got together on the oval where Doug Simpson and Tahlie Vermeulen filmed the production. A few staff missed out on the whole school dance performance, I think they were hiding. Not to leave them out, solos were demanded of Rob Griffiths and Deb Doust, which really made the clip. Claudia filmed a few shots around the school of smaller groups then put the clip together.

Vibrant Celebrations begin The Denmark Arts Markets season gets underway this Saturday 10th December, 2016. A stalwart of our beloved South Coast summers, the Denmark Arts Markets are a vibrant celebration of the creativity that surrounds us. It is a reminder of so many of the things we love about our region. Filled with arts, crafts, music, food, entertainment and outright fun, it’s a day for us all. The first market of the season, affectionately called the ‘locals’ market because the peak tourist season has not yet hit, will showcase many of our talented local musicians and performers as well as renowned touring artist Si Mullumby, a contemporary didgeridoo player and percussionist who has been described as an “astonishing solo player” by Guy Caron - Creative director of Cirque du Soleil. It has been a huge year for Mullumby, performing three concerts at the Sydney Opera House, and touring Europe and Japan. Local Denmark musicians will of course be on show too with the Myles Mitchell Band performing their original blend of hip shaking alternative blues, laidback acoustic folk duo Riverbeats featuring David Rastrick and Rachael Colmer, Freya’s Bounty performing original 30s jazz infused contemporary blues music written by Danielle Flynn and Madeline Winton. The Secondhand Band will be roaming the precinct with their fun, energetic live music, all delivered on eclectic second hand instruments. Our youth will be on show too with performances by students from Denmark Senior High School, and The Denmark Fiddlers, a lively and colourful group of student violinists lead by their talented teachers Jude Iddison and Marie Limondin. Of course all manner of artists and creators will be exhibiting and selling their work, as well as culinary delights. The Denmark Arts Markets are supported by Act Belong Commit, Healthway, Shire of Denmark,

A Man in a Tree There is a man in a tree I ask, do you see? Some may not, some do, It’s just a point of view.

expectant of the new reality that is truly new, truly real, promised by their Lord Jesus Christ, who said, “Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming...Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.” Want to know more about this promised coming? Then read Matthew’s Gospel chapter 24. Want a contemporary translation of the Holy Bible? St Johns Books, Fremantle have postage free month in December. Email: [email protected] phone: 08 9335 1982 Submitted by Geoffrey Newby

I ask the reader, do you see an outline of a man pictured above? This image photographed through the window blind captures a view of a tree-canopysilhouette against Douglas Hill, Nornalup. The outline suggests an elderly man on his back asleep. In one direction he looks like a clown snoring, while facing the opposite direction could he be the man with the toupee - Donald Trump? The photograph was taken early in the Presidential Primaries held in the United States this year. Since then, spring growth within the tree branches has now modified this portentious sign revealing a clown less so and a President Elect in transition! Much media attention has been given to unexpected responses from large sections of national populations in 2016. In the United States, Britain, Europe and elsewhere peoples’ decisions have defied expected outcomes. Academics define the time as the era of “Post Truth,” while some social commentators consider this the “New Reality” for the twenty-first century. By naming this global phenomenon we humans try to take control of the chaos stalking the periphery of our consciousness - that fear and insecurity that ripples through communities in the face of the unknown. With news of the death of ninety year old dictator Fidel Castro last week, older Australians would recall how fear escalated across communities mid twentieth century over Cuba’s connection with nuclear powered, USSR. Similar comparisons of threatening ideological partnership, namely North Korea and China today, have not been missed by some. Good men and women must pray for their governing authorities that rulers will not be asleep but awake dispensing justice, promoting peace and establishing dignity amongst its citizens— a God appointed responsibility. In Broadway New York, Piccadilly Circus London, Down Town Beijing, in fact in all nations, there are men and women who, listen, pray and wait during this season of Advent,

End of year Celebrations! An end of year business sundowner, recently held at the Tree Top Walk, was a welcome break for industry in the lead up to the busy festive season. Hosted by the Department of Parks and Wildlife, in partnership with the Walpole and Districts Community Development Group, 70 industry representatives joined together to share in the achievements of 2016 and explore opportunities for 2017. Department of Parks and Wildlife district manager Cameron Shaw said that it was great to welcome community members from Walpole, Denmark and Albany who were involved in tourism. “It is important to maintain the profile and status of the Tree Top Walk as a key tourism magnet in the southwest. Its role in underpinning local economies was evident with more than $50 million being spent in the region since the Tree Top Walk opened,” Cameron said.

Above: Jamie Dunross with Great Southern Development Commission Bruce Manning.

“We remain optimistic that with the break in the weather and a changing consumer confidence it will kick-start healthy visitation levels for the summer period. “We will continue to improve our facilities and the way we do business to ensure we remain one of the State’s top nature based tourism attractions. “This year the Tree Top Walk celebrated its 20 th birthday party, hosted more than 100 media and trade representatives, held a bush foods gourmet degustation dinner on the Tree Top Walk deck, teamed up with local artists to deliver an inspiring exhibition in the Southern Art Trail, created magical moments for big and small kids in the holiday activity programs and too many more to mention….we have been busy.

“We are committed to being dynamic and innovative at the Tree Top Walk as we enter a revitalization period and explore new possibilities for 2017.” Cameron expressed his appreciation to all key stakeholders for their support and collaboration during 2016 and looked forward to building on this solid foundation into the future. Music was provided by local band Dig the Dust and Father Christmas made a surprise visit ahead of his hectic schedule. $500 was donated to the Walpole and Districts Community Development Group as part proceeds of the evening.

This was received as a follow-up regarding a letter published in an October edition of the Walpole Weekly. To whom it may concern “When we visited Walpole for our fantastic getaway in October, Michael Filby, our guest speaker on the Monday evening, kindly gave the Over 55 Walking Association one of his beautiful photos when he came again on the Thursday evening to have dinner with us. The photo was meant to be a prize at the Quiz Night being held that evening. It was impossible to split this between 10 members of the winning table and it was agreed that we would raffle it at our End of Year Lunch in November. The raffle was held on Tuesday 22nd November and the winner, Ivy Stephens, was absolutely thrilled to be taking home this beautiful prize. We raised $329.00 in the raffle and this has been donated to the Children’s Hospital with a notation that it is from Michael Filby and the Over 55 Walking Association. Thank you Michael and Irmgard. DEPOT ADDRESS 6 MILES ROAD KEWDALE

The attached photo shots taken on Saturday after the blessing of the fleet highlight a number of flaws with the current layout and signage on the main street of Walpole. About 30 minutes prior to these shots the emergency fleet was passing along Nockolds Street and if this camper had been there at that time it would have been difficult to pass if someone had parked wide in the parallel parking. Yes the driver of the camper is probably incompetent in some way or other but there are no signs directing long vehicles to the long vehicle parking bay that is now compromised with the rubbish trailer being parked in the middle. The powers at the Shire of Manjimup need to take a leap into the 21st century and realise that by promoting tourism they are attracting this type of vehicle and should have measures in place to accommodate these RVs. Standing discussing the issue with one of the town’s business proprietors, we also noted the conflict between vehicle and pedestrian traffic, then observed that you cannot legally extract your vehicle from a parking bay if there are vehicles adjacent to you as you have to reverse over a continuous white line to the incorrect side of the road. December 7th, 2016

- 15

Now, not being those who criticize without offering solutions we felt the simplest remedy is to remove all the 90 degree parking from where it is and create angle parking on the south (shop) side of the road, remove the continuous white line, reduce the speed limit from 50 to 30 for the “slip road” and review where parallel can be used on the north side of the “slip road”. Maybe the rubbish trailer could be relocated next to the dump point. Then add a few aesthetically pleasing signs directing long vehicle to the long vehicle bay. Not hard? Today was not a busy day and as we approach the silly season there can be little but chaos and the potential for accidents and frayed tempers... However as I do not reside in the Manji Shire apparently it is none of my business. warm regards Alex Williams, Hazelvale resident.

Christmas Parking Arrangements It can be anticipated that over the Christmas period Walpole will be inundated with large numbers of visitors with their cars and trailers. To avoid a parking chaos in our central business area, I suggest that detailed parking arrangements should be planned at this point in time how to accommodate the anticipated vehicle overflow. Large temporary signage or perhaps traffic wardens should be considered to direct drivers to overflow parking areas. John Kolo, Walpole resident.

Walpole Weekly We wish to advise that there will be no Walpole Weekly published on 28th December 2016. The Walpole Weekly office will be closed during this period. The first edition of 2017 will be published on 4th January 2017

Supporting veterans and communities The Government will honour veterans in towns and cities around Australia with more than $530,000 in grants to ex-service organisations for community projects. Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said the latest round of 32 grants under the Veteran and Community Grants program would benefit veterans, their families and communities. “These grants will fund a diverse range of projects and equipment, including facilities upgrades to improve venue accessibility, computer equipment and social outings,” Mr Tehan said. “As a nation we must never forget the service and sacrifice of the men and women who serve in defence of our nation.

Fire hazard reduction works

The support provided through these grants complements efforts underway at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) to transform services to the veteran community and their families.” Ex-service and community organisations, veteran representative groups, private organisations and projects that promote improved independence and quality of life for veterans are eligible for funding through the Veteran and Community Grants program. For more information or to apply visit the DVA website (www.dva.gov.au/consultation-and-grants/ grants).

December in the FCG? Other than corn, our summer planting is complete. There will be a bumper harvest available in the coming months, including blueberries, raspberries, tomatoes, spinach, 3 types of eggplant, stone fruits, basil, chilies, beetroot, shallots onions, cucumbers, beans, pumpkins, citrus and passionfruit. All our produce is yummy and grown without chemicals or sprays.

We’d like to thank all our wiling workers and local people who constantly support the garden with regular purchases and donations. We couldn’t do without you.

These are currently ready for you to pick. The beds are signposted:  Three types of lettuce  Strawberries- huge and sweet (please put the net back as you found it)  Rhubarb- 2 types  Large and juicy white salad onions  Fennel

Why not come for a look around on a Thursday afternoon at 4pm when the ‘busy bees’ are at the garden each week? The Ficifolia Garden is your community garden.

Garlic is currently being harvested and will be available in time for Christmas. This year’s crop of Argentinian purple is fantastic quality. We will take forward orders. Prices: $30/kg or $12 for 250 gm bags. Please message us on our Facebook page or email me at [email protected] Di and Merry have been putting the finishing touches to the Fairy Garden which I’m sure visiting children will all enjoy. It’s gorgeous!

MARDO

(Antechinus Flavipes)

The photo is of a mardo’s nest I discovered in a drawer containing some of my doylies and tray cloths I worked 70 years ago. How this creature came into my house carrying one or two dead leaves at a time I will never know. I never saw the mardo at all – only the traces it left behind. I went to this drawer in a spare room looking for something. It also chewed holes in some of my doylies. Entry to my house must have been under a door – and to the drawer up underneath the dressing table. I am told that moth balls will deter them. Submitted by Helen Pierce
