est. 1983 E S TA B L I S H E D I N OX F O R D S H I R E • E N G L A N D We’ve heard a few claims as to the exact origins of the business and its name, but the Fired Earth we know today was primarily the brainchild of our friend and founder Nicholas Kneale in 1983. From day one the aim was to provide beautiful handcrafted tiles not easily available from the standard tile stores of the time, an idea we still hold dear today - and, despite many attempts at copying no one has yet to replicate our unique approach. Baked clay has been at the heart of domestic flooring for thousands of years and Terracotta was the first range of Fired Earth tiles sold from farm buildings in a hamlet in North Oxfordshire, seen below in a sketch from our first brochure.

It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s unwise to pay too little. When you pay too much you lose a little money. That is all. When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. It can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder it’s well to add something for the risk you run. And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better.

Metropolis STREAMLINED FORMS WITH AERODYNAMIC DESIGNS Industrial design influenced the Art Deco movement which in turn yielded and became modernism, where form more closely followed function. These British hand finished tiles fit neatly into this latter aesthetic movement. The geometric forms offer a glimpse of the Avant Garde style that dominated architecture in the 1920’s.

PRODUCT
The advice given in this chapter - including on suitability, appearance, application and so on - is given on the basis that the tiles are installed with appropriate products and have been fitted in accordance with our installation guides. All our guides can be downloaded from our website, firedearth.com. These should be read by the customer and installer prior to installation.
Characteristics COLOUR VARIATION Shade and colour variation can occur as a result of the products being made from natural materials and/or from one batch to another. Please ensure sufficient tiles are ordered on one order as we cannot guarantee that further product will be available from the same batch. Please note: a single sample should not be taken as an accurate indication of colour. Our sales team can guide you with examples of the colour variation from one sample to another. In addition, all our tiles have been assessed for colour variation and have been graded 1 to 5 dependant on the extent of variation you should anticipate:
1. Very limited variation 2. Slight variation 3. Moderate variation 4. Significant variation 5. Extreme variation
Suitability All our tiles have been tested to check their suitability for a number of different uses. Please see below the definition of each category: WALL Suitable for use on the wall - please check the chart to ensure suitability for wet areas, etc. FLOOR Suitable for use on the floor and able to withstand a reasonable amount of traffic. KITCHENS Suitable for use in a busy family kitchen. BATHROOMS Suitable for use in a busy family bathroom as a decorative wall or floor finish (check suitability) that is not expected to be excessively wet (check shower suitability and wet room floor suitability if the tiles intended use is to include these areas). SHOWER WALLS Suitable for use in a shower enclosure or shower area; and able to withstand excessive water (please note some tiles may require sealing for this application). WET ROOM FLOORS Please ask instore for further information on the suitability of Fired Earth tiles for wet room floors. HEARTHS AND FIREPLACE SURROUNDS Suitable for use in this area provided the tiles are installed at least
30cm from the heat source. The heat may still cause crazing and smoke, wood sap and other fuel by-products may stain or discolour the tiles. EXTERNAL Due to the risk of damage caused by frost, not all of of our tiles are recommended for use outside. Should you have a specific query, please contact our technical department on 01295 814271.
OTHER CHARACTERISTICS Other than colour variation some of our products are also subject to minor chips, blemishes and pin holes. In many instances these imperfections are considered a desirable characteristic of the tile and should not be viewed as a fault. Our showroom sales team can talk you through the expected characteristics of your tile selection to ensure you are happy before placing your order. The chosen grout colour and joint width can greatly affect the overall appearance of the tile installation. Please ensure you have considered your choice carefully and ask in store for examples of our grout colours. It is important to have a joint to allow for movement (unless otherwise specified) in the structure of your installation. Tiles should not butt against one another. See our price guide or website for grout joints.
SWIMMING POOL Suitable for use within a swimming pool where tiles are continuously submerged. SWIMMING POOL SURROUNDS Suitable for use around the edge of a swimming pool with care. WORKTOPS Suitable for use as a food preparation or bathroom worktop. Please note that in this environment it is still necessary to use appropriate chopping boards/pot stands. COOKER SPLASHBACKS Suitable for use on the wall behind a cooker hob. (Please note some tiles may require sealing for this application). OVER UNDERFLOOR HEATING Suitable for use over the Fired Earth underfloor heating systems. STEAM ROOMS AND SAUNAS Suitable for use in a steam room or sauna, floor or wall. Please check the chart to ensure no exceptions apply.

CRAZING The tile will be delivered with a crazing (fine cracks running through the glazed finish) or the glaze is likely to craze over time due to changes in the environment. These tiles are developed to have this characteristic and therefore this is not deemed to be a product fault.
REQUIRES SEALING The product is porous and requires sealing to protect the tile from water ingress and/or staining.

Installation Guides: We have free downloadable installation guides available from our website. Installations should only be carried out once the relevant guide has been read and understood by the installer. Installation constitutes acceptance of the product.
SUMMARISED TERMS AND CONDITIONS Order Amendments/Cancellations: Orders (except special order items) may be cancelled at any time before any agreed delivery date. Amendments to orders can be made at any time up to the packing day. Please contact your showroom for assistance. Delivery: Please advise our home deliveries team if access to the delivery address will be difficult for an 8ft 6in wide, 30ft long, highsided vehicle. Wherever possible, deliveries will be made using our own fleet of vehicles with a two man crew. Where a carrier service is required i.e. overseas deliveries, small parcels or express deliveries, we will use a carefully selected carrier service. These deliveries are made to the nearest access point to the delivery address. If you have any concerns regarding this matter, please contact Home Deliveries on 01295 814313.

Checking Your Order: Please check your order within 10 working days of receipt. We reserve the right to refuse claims for damaged or missing goods made after this time.
