WalkingWomen 2016 Sue Donovan and WW’s Office Manager, Clare Kelly, look forward to hearing from you with your 2016 bookings, old friends and new. Thank you for your suggestions and your continued support. As always we have worked hard to bring you a great range of holidays at exceptional value for money. We always compare our holidays and price with other companies to make sure we remain competitive. Inevitably accommodation prices continue to rise, however we have been able to offer some holidays at the same price as last year and even a couple where the price is lower!

When you book with WalkingWomen you get: • a professional guide to show you walks you might otherwise miss

• fun and companionship of walking in a group

• to visit fantastic places, many of which are only accessible on foot

• support and challenge

• a chance to make new friends • proven health benefits from walking in the countryside

• good quality accommodation (we offer a range of accommodation from simple to luxury, all of which we believe provide excellent value)

• everything organised for you; you just turn up!

• packed lunches to take on the walks and often other meals too Please book as early as you can; this gives you the best chance of getting a place on the holiday of your choice and of being able to have a single room. It also helps WW keep going (fewer cancelled places and/or holidays) and less admin which gives us the ability to keep offering very competitive prices and great value for money! I hope you enjoy our 2016 programme and I’ll be continuing to ask you for suggestions about which holidays you’d like to see in future years. Meanwhile, I hope you all have a fabulous festive season and 2016 and that we walk with some of you soon. With very best wishes, Sue and the team at WalkingWomen. However you do still get £20 off every third holiday in the same calendar year via our ‘Frequent Walker Miles’, our way of rewarding loyal customers. In addition, if you book another holiday within two weeks, we’ll take £20 off the price as a ‘Welcome Back’ loyalty discount. WalkingWomen – what to expect? WalkingWomen is about making wonderful walks more accessible. It’s about un-pressured walking in beautiful scenery, or challenge and adventure if that’s what you want. It’s about attractive and affordable places to stay to suit a range of tastes and budgets. And most of all, it’s about the fun and stimulation of walking with a group of other women! Here is some more about what to expect… • Friendly women – usually 10-12 in each walking group – of all different backgrounds and ages; that’s

part of the fun, and it brings a richness to the conversations and socialising that goes on. Many women say they haven’t laughed so much in a long while, yet it’s also easy to take space if you wish. “Does anyone else come on their own?” Yes, you’ll find that most women do! All women are welcome. • A helpful guide to show you lovely walks you might otherwise miss, and who is usually around into

the evening too. We try not to make things too ‘organised’ – more like holidaying with a group of friends. • The evening is spent eating together, getting to know each other, playing games, taking a stroll to

the pub – or taking an early night with a book. • In the morning, we usually set off walking between about 9.00 to 9.30. When we get back depends

largely on the grade of the walk. There’s then time for a shower, a stroll into the village before supper, or a drink in the bar. In the UK, the last day’s walk is a little shorter to allow you to get away by 2pm. On holidays abroad there isn’t usually a walk on the last day as we’ve further to travel. • “Is everyone very fit?” & “What pace will we be walking?”

Even very fit women ask this question! Like the rest of the population, the women who come cover the whole range of fitness – from those who only walk on pavements when shopping, to those who regularly walk in the hills. Of course, the fitness and pace of these two will vary considerably, and we offer a wide range of grades to match this. Between these extremes are many women who are reasonably fit, do some regular exercise, and who are often delighted to find they are fitter than they thought! Erring on the side of caution is safer than choosing too high a grade and hoping “I’ll be fitter by then – and it’s the right dates and a great price!” Our experience is that you can’t just force your fitness up a notch overnight, and you won’t enjoy trying. However, if you read the grade descriptions carefully, they will help you choose a holiday with other women of similar fitness and pace. That way you’ll have a wonderful holiday and come back for more! If you can’t decide, there are many holidays that offer two grades of walks that you can choose from each day. Alternatively, give us a ring in the WW office – we’re always happy to help you decide! “Excellent choice of route, relaxed and sensitive leadership – more like walking with a group of friends rather than being on a guided holiday. I don’t like being ‘over-organised, this holiday allowed me to have sufficient control of my day which I thoroughly appreciated”.

Walking Grades – Choose from Gentle to High Alpine We offer a wide range of levels of walk to suit all levels of experience and fitness. This diagram gives a summary of each grade, starting with Gentle (around 3-5 miles, mainly on the flat) all the way up to High Alpine. If you need more information, please see our website www.walkingwomen.com or call us on +44 (0)114 241 2774.

UK holiday arrangements and travel times We assume you will be travelling to your destination on the first date of the holiday. We don’t walk on that day, except perhaps for an evening stroll to get to know each other. You can usually get into your room from 2pm. The walk on the last day is shorter, and we are generally back by 2pm.

Trekking If ‘trekking’ to you means days of slogging with the kitchen sink on your back – forget it! We use the word to refer to holidays that involve walking to a new place most days – e.g. along the fabulous South West Coast Path in Cornwall or Nepal. ‘Day pack only’ means that taxi or porters transport your main luggage. A trekking day can sometimes be a little longer than a day walk of the same grade and there isn’t the same flexibility to take a day off as with other holidays, so please choose the grade with special care.

Taking time out – other things to do Whether you walk each day is up to you; it’s only tricky if you want to take time out on a trekking day. There are lots of other things to do – either for a day off or after walking. You might also want to explore on your own for a day, or take time off to sit under a tree to read, paint, or enjoy the view.

Dogs It can be great to walk with a dog for company, however they do not always walk well with a group. Dogs will be allowed only on certain holidays and will be allowed on the walks at the guide’s discretion if well-behaved, completely non-threatening, and kept under control at all times particularly around sheep. Assistance dogs are allowed on ALL holidays.

Holidays Abroad – Flights and transfers… The cost of your flight is not included in any 2016 holiday price. We believe that it gives the maximum flexibility for you to be able to choose your flight from a variety of airports (provided your flight fits with our transfers) and gives you the best chance of getting a good price using the low cost flight companies if you wish, as well as the option to extend your stay. We suggest www.skyscanner.net to search for available flights. WalkingWomen arranges the airport transfer to your destination on holidays abroad to keep arrangements simple and affordable. When buying your flight, please first check your holiday information sheet to see which flight/s will suit the transfer in each direction, (or for details of our transfer time). WalkingWomen is not responsible for your transfer if you arrive at a different time or on a different flight than the one we have detailed. Most of our holidays are based at some distance from the airport, and it will often be difficult or expensive for you to arrange your own transfer. Please contact the WW office before buying a different flight from the one/s given on your Holiday Information Sheet. You can buy your flights on the internet or 5

over the phone (via an agent or directly with the flight company). We can let you have contact details for agents for long haul destinations (e.g. Nepal & South Africa) who sometimes only request a deposit for your flight until 10 weeks before departure and can provide ATOL protection for your flight.

Insurance essential abroad If you book a foreign holiday with WalkingWomen it is essential that you have sickness and injury insurance. We will require proof of insurance on arrival and will be unable to take women walking if they are not insured. Insurance against your having to cancel is highly recommended on ALL holidays. It also pays if travelling in Europe to carry an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card – replacing the E1.11) to reduce any medical charges payable at the time. For competitive insurance try: Columbus Direct Travel Insurance on 0800 068 0060 or Essential Travel on 0871 360 2712. Age UK is very competitive if you are over 65yrs: 0800 389 4852. See also Direct Travel Insurance (www.direct-travel.co.uk).

WW Cancellations We try our very best to run all of our holidays. Nevertheless, there are unfortunately situations where we may need to cancel a holiday. When holidays are undersubscribed we often run them on lower numbers than planned to avoid your disappointment. Sometimes, though, this is simply not possible. If WW cancels a holiday we repay you all of the money you have paid to us for the holiday.

Single Supplements Many people do not like to pay extra for a single room, however it is sometimes unavoidable. WW frequently charges a lower single supplement than we have to pay. We keep our single supplements as low as possible and we even have several holidays this year where you can have a single room without paying a supplement (subject to availability – book early!)

What is included in our holiday prices • E very holiday price includes: the walks and guides; any activities – like yoga – that are specified as part of the holidays; and any other costs that are mentioned in the holiday description. • Unless we say otherwise, prices include: all luggage transport on trekking holidays; transport to walks or across a lake on a ferry if it’s a necessary part of the walk for that day; transfer from a foreign airport to the holiday venue on most foreign holidays. (Cable car transport and ferries on the sea are not automatically included since the weather might prevent them from running). • All accommodation is included for the number of nights specified, plus full or part board per number of nights (see individual holiday descriptions). Where full board is not provided it is generally because you will get a more economic deal with part board. Full board means that all breakfasts, packed lunches and most evening meals are included. Part board means that breakfast and packed lunch are included unless exceptionally it says otherwise in the holiday description. On all holidays it is usual for us to eat together in the evening. • In B&Bs and hotels the price is based on you sharing a room, with a friend or another woman from the walking group. In youth hostels and alpine refuges it is based on you sharing a dormitory. The price of single and ensuite supplements varies by hotel and by the room types we have available at the time you book. Please contact us to ask what rooms are available when you book. Please check your booking confirmation carefully; if it doesn’t say ensuite your room is not ensuite. • Sometimes it is possible to get extra nights before or after the holiday at our rates. We can book these for you, subject to availability, and will charge a booking fee of £5 per night for this service. “Excellent choice of route, relaxed and sensitive leadership – more like walking with a group of friends rather than being on a guided holiday. I don’t like being ‘over-organised, this holiday allowed me to have sufficient control of my day which I thoroughly appreciated”. 6

Holiday Calendar 2016 It’s important to choose a holiday that matches your level of fitness – for your enjoyment and everyone else’s; so please read our Grade Descriptions on our website or call us on +44 (0)114 241 2774 before you book! If you’re not sure which grade to choose, try a holiday with the two most likely grades, then you will be able to swap walks if need be.

Northern England – Lake District England has many wonderful places to walk and you’ll find lots of them in this brochure, including some new spots for 2016, however the Lake District remains unique for its dramatic beauty, and for the huge variety of walks accessible at every level. It contains England’s highest mountains and hills – or ‘fells’ – and her most beautiful gentle valleys and lakes. There are woodland walks and waterfalls, secluded tarns that invite a swim, and higher and wilder craggy fell tops to roam over or which shape magnificent views from below. In the Lake District we offer lots of breaks at all levels – many chances to get fit or just get away from it all! Everywhere we stay is easily reached by both car and public transport.

Grasmere – Lake District Grasmere is one of the most central of the Lake District valleys, with stunning scenery that has inspired poets and artists alike. There are beautiful and varied paths at every level, and plenty to do after walking – from exploring Grasmere village with its teashops and outdoor shops, to visiting Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage or going rowing on the lake. Grasmere’s nearest train station is Windermere, and there is a regular bus service from the station. The Grasmere area is wonderful for walks of all grades (levels).

High Grasmere walks Grasmere is a great base for both Slow High and High Level holidays with several classic high walks starting nearby. As a warm up, the wonderful ridge walk via Helm Crag to High Raise will give us some of the best views of the Central Fells. We can also tackle Helvellyn and the famous Fairfield Horseshoe – or perhaps take in the Langdale Pikes.

Grasmere Walking for Health – NEW! As well as leading you on lovely (very) gentle walks in the area, your guide will look at how to incorporate walking into your daily life with a view to improving health and fitness. We will consider how to implement a walking programme and keep a health diary recording plans and progress. We will also talk about what to wear, using poles and generally how to get the most out of walking. The sessions will be informal and informative! You will come away with lots of practical ideas on how you might make changes to your lifestyle.

Glenthorne Guest House, Grasmere All our Grasmere breaks stay at Glenthorne Guest House. A very comfortable and friendly place to stay, serving excellent food. There’s a tradition here of free tea and cakes after walking. The guest house has a big garden with lovely views, a sizeable lounge with a conservatory, a separate table tennis room, and a large car park. Holidays here are priced on a full board basis. Glenthorne is the venue for our special New Year break, where we have a cook and everyone helps with preparation. Holidays based at Glenthorne 30 Apr-4 May (Sat-Wed) 15-19 Aug (Mon-Fri) 17-20 Oct (Mon-Thu) 28 Dec-02 Jan (Wed-Mon)

Borrrowdale – Lake District Borrowdale is the name given to the valley beyond Derwent Water – often called the most beautiful valley in England. The road that takes you there from Keswick will captivate you as it winds through the woods beside the River Derwent then opens out to vistas of the surrounding fells. In Borrowdale we stay at Glaramara Centre near Seatoller hamlet which is superbly located for walks in several directions. The centre has plenty of parking space or the nearest train station for north Lakeland is Penrith. Gentle Borrowdale walks Gentle walks will take us into the heart of Borrowdale, following mossy woodland paths where we might see deer and red squirrels, or walking beside the lovely River Derwent for tea at Grange. On other days, we can explore the wilder tributaries of the Derwent – the Langstrath and Seathwaite valleys – with foaming pools that invite a swim or paddle, and rushing waterfalls if it’s been raining. Several different paths can reach the wonderful views of the Allendale Ramble. Or we can even go as far as Derwent Water for a peaceful stroll beside the lake – returning by bus if we wish.

Intermediate & High Intermediate Borrowdale walks Borrowdale offers a wealth of Intermediate walks. We might warm up by climbing the path to Dock Tarn which will give us superb views over Eagle Crag and allow us to reach Watendlath Tarn and low craggy ‘tops’ nearby with views to the valley. We will also include the fabulous High Spy ridge where our efforts will be rewarded with views in all directions and a lovely descent overlooking Derwent Water. On other days, Haystacks near Buttermere might tempt us – Wainwright’s favourite fell, or rocky Glaramara just across the valley from our accommodation. High Intermediate walks may start with a warm up on the High Spy ridge, and work up to higher tops – Green Gable overlooking Ennerdale, or Dale Head overlooking Buttermere. We can also tackle High Raise via the Greenup valley for its impressive views of the Central fells. And we can continue beyond Glaramara’s summit to Allen Crags, gaining dramatic close up views of Great End and Great Gable before we return beside a tumbling beck.

High Level Borrowdale walks Borrowdale is a valley much loved by high level walkers for its craggy scenery, flexibility of routes, and the promise of Scafell Pike just around the corner. Saving the best for the last – unless the forecast encourages a different order of play – we might warm up with a steady climb to Dale Head’s summit and use it to extend the wonderful High Spy ridge walk or return via Honister Pass. Our next choice is likely to be Great Gable – a majestic monolith with a lot of ‘up’, but it all feels worth it when you finally stand on the summit soaking in the views over Ennerdale and Wasdale with the sea beyond! At some point Scafell Pike is a ‘must’ unless the weather is really against us: England’s highest fell, with plenty of mountainous scenery in the form of dramatic gullies along the ‘Corridor Route’, scree towards the top, and probably quite a few people as well!

Glaramara Centre, near Seatoller, Borrowdale Glaramara Centre has a wonderful setting at the head of Borrowdale on the outskirts of Seatoller hamlet – a location that has ensured its popularity as a walking centre for many years. Here you can have a standard single room without a supplement. There are now some ensuite rooms available – if you book early. Downstairs there is a large lounge and a separate bar – both with snug log fires, a dining room, a small games/TV room, and an efficient drying room. Sometimes we will share the centre with another group. Holidays here are priced on a full board basis and are very good value, with a choice of delicious evening meals made from fresh ingredients. The Glaramara Centre in Borrowdale will be the base for our NNAS Bronze Level Navigation Course in May. The training will involve some indoor work but we aim to be outdoors enjoying the countryside for the majority of the time. The Lake District is the perfect area to hone your navigation skills with plenty of footpaths, walls and an abundance of contour lines to identify! The course is suitable for complete beginners or those with some experience who would like to gain a formal qualification. The course covers map reading and basic compass work plus elements on route planning and safety. The National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) is a personal performance, non-competitive, incentive scheme for all ages to learn navigation skills and gain confidence to get out and enjoy the countryside. Our Birdwatching holiday with Madeline will take in some of the beautiful walks in the area along with ample opportunities for bird watching. One day we will visit the RSPB site at Leighton Moss where there are a wide variety of birds to be seen throughout the year. April – Clarendon Way, Wiltshire and Hampshire The Clarendon Way is a 24 mile long distance path running from Salisbury Cathedral to Winchester Cathedral. We travel from Wiltshire into Hampshire on the Clarendon Way and enjoy some wonderful scenery. The path starts next to Salisbury Cathedral and heads through Clarendon Park and past the ruins of Clarendon Palace before a short wooded section takes us to Pitton. We then cross the hills to West and Middle Winterslow and descend into Broughton where we join a lovely country lane that takes us onto Houghton. Here we cross the River Test on our way to King’s Somborne. Another wooded section through Parnholt woods then leads to the beautiful Farley Mount Country Park where at the highest point there is a pyramid shaped folly that gives the park its name. The final section sees us descend into Winchester, passing through the outskirts and then along the River Itchen to finish next to the cathedral. We will take some time to explore Winchester before being taken back to Salisbury. We recommend booking transport from 4pm onwards. Although the walks are longer than our usual low intermediate walks (9 to 11 miles), there is not a great deal of ascent. We stay at Sarum College in Salisbury. Scotland We’ve expanded our Scottish programme this year. We have our popular Low Intermediate Mull holiday running twice, in May and again in September and two opportunities to visit the Isle of Arran, described as ‘Scotland in Miniature’ with a new Gentle holiday in June and a Low Intermediate option in October. We also have new Scottish holidays in Fife and Rum.

May and September Isle of Mull, Scotland Mull is one of the largest of the Hebridean Islands off the west coast of Scotland. It has a long and strikingly beautiful coastline of high cliffs and bays, with caves and rock arches, and views out to the many smaller islands that surround it. Most notable of these is the ‘Holy Isle’ of Iona where we will walk on one day. Another rewarding 24

visit might be to cathedral-like Fingle’s Cave on the island of Staffa, whose geometrical basalt pillars have even inspired a Mendelssohn overture! On other days we will take beautiful walks along Mull’s coastline, stopping at sandy bays, or walking to other famous caves and rock features. We will be staying at Ardachy House Hotel on the south coast, overlooking the deserted sands of Ardalanish Bay and the islands of Jura, Colonsay, and Islay. Iona is only 7 miles away; seals, otters and the elusive Corncrake are regular visitors to the area, and there is a standing stone and Iron Age fort close by. Mull is reached by train from Glasgow to Oban, then a magical ferry to Craignure on Mull, & local bus from the ferry to Bunassen where we will collect you. (Staffa Island boat trip about £25 not included in the price as it depends on the weather). Price includes: 7 nights full board in ensuite twins; all walks transport & Iona ferry. June – High Level Rum, Scotland Rum is a diamond shaped jewel of a place – an island of the Inner Hebrides of spectacular wildness and beauty. Its glaciated ‘cullins’ (high rocks), Askival, Hellival, Trollaval, and Orval, started life near the equator, and are the shattered remnants of a once huge volcano. Apart from its incredible scenery, Rum has been a nature reserve for 25

almost 60 years. We may be lucky enough to see otters offshore, or even the rare white-tailed sea eagle; golden eagles often soar above the Cullins, and Shearwater skim the sea in significant numbers. There are many fabulous walks here, often off-path through the heather – along high cliffs overlooking the sea, onto peaks with stunning views to the glens below, or looking north to the Skye Cuillin ridge. Our base will be the newly built Rum Bunkhouse where we will stay in small dormitories. There is a well-equipped self-catering kitchen and plenty of space for dining with a view! January – Tenerife, Canary Islands This holiday with Marian is based at the comfortable and welcoming Hotel Alta Montana in the little mountain spa town of Vilaflor and allows you to discover the often ignored sub-tropical landscape of Tenerife – so unexpected if you only associate Tenerife with tourists and beaches! High above the coast – and often above the clouds – are extraordinary walks through volcanic scenery where the summit, Teide, is surrounded by fantastic old lava flows and the rim of a huge crater. Teide at 3718m can be visited by cable car on the free day, or we’ll get breathtaking views when we walk up Guajara peak on the crater rim 2715m above sea level. We walk the last 565m of ascent, crater floor to Guajara summit. Lower down and level with Vilaflor is a corona of pine forest encircling the island, and from the hotel we can walk beneath the pines, skirting spectacular ravines called barrancos or exploring the fascinating rocks of the Paisaje Lunar (Lunar Landscape). Hotel Alta Montana offers comfortable ensuite twin and single rooms, a swimming pool, a generous breakfast and packed lunches. Evening meals, organised by your guide are in Vilaflor’s small restaurants (not included from £10). Price includes: 7 nights bed and breakfast, packed lunch each day excluding free day, transfer meeting certain flights, all transport to walks. 26 Jan-02 Feb (Tue-Tue)

March – La Gomera, Canary Islands La Gomera is one of the smallest of the inhabited Canary Islands, 30 minutes south of Tenerife by ferry. Few places in the world have the natural wealth of this circular volcanic island: misty northern laurel forests, scorched canyons, grand rock monoliths, palm groves, and sea cliffs plunging to crystal clear water below. Ancient tracks and trails thread through this landscape, allowing us to make an anti-clockwise circuit of the central volcanic massif, Alto de Garajonay. After a first hotel night in San Sebastian, we’ll walk from Agulo to Vallehermoso, staying here at another comfortable small hotel for 2 nights to allow a stunning sea cliff walk in this corner of the island. We then ascend to characterful Pension Sonia in Chipude, high on the central massif and close to the summit. The next day is long but breathtaking, descending to Playa Santiago on the sunny south coast for 2 nights in apartments by the sea – a wonderful place to take a rest day or explore at your leisure. From here our last day’s walk back to San Sebastian is striking. We then have a last night in San Sebastian to celebrate before catching the ferry back to Tenerife for our flights home. Guided by Marian. You carry a day pack only – luggage is transported. Please note on one day the ascent is 850m and on another the descent is 1200m. Price includes: 7 nights B&B in hotels & apartments; all transport & luggage transport. Single rooms are available on some nights – £15 per night supplement. Flight to Tenerife, lunches and evening meals are not included. 01-08 Mar (Tue-Tue)

“I had a great time! I don’t go away very much and I wasn’t sure what an all-women holiday would be like, but I am glad I took the plunge. Women and walking definitely go together. There was a good mix of people and the guides were excellent. The accommodation was comfortable, the walks excellent and a lot of fun, and I enjoyed the photos on the website after the holiday”. Italy – Dolomites Skiing, Val di Fassa Italy Imagine waking up opposite wonderful mountains, enjoying a delicious breakfast then skiing down a white immaculate piste, crossing the tracks of wild animals and feeling the early morning breeze on your face… This is not a dream but is the start of the day on our new winter ski holiday. This year we are offering a week in the Italian Dolomites. We will be based in the Ciampedie ski resort, a satellite resort in the Dolomiti Superski area which is well connected by road to gateways to the Sella Ronda tour and to the famous Marmolada descent (from the cable car summit at 3269m down to the valley). Everywhere there is magnificent and astonishing scenery and breathtaking views of the Dolomites peaks. We will be based at Rifugio Negritella at 2000m. The owner Alessandro inherited this mountain rifugio from his grandfather and renovated it to include a spa (sauna, steam and relaxation room) and en suite bedrooms. The Rifugio can be reached only by cable car so after taking the last afternoon ride up we will be completely isolated and ready to enjoy delicious dinners (fresh homemade pasta and local products), walks under the stars and silent nights in the mountains. Lunches can be obtained in the Rifugi that we will find on the pistes (price not included). To fully enjoy this holiday in the Dolomites you should be able confidently to ski blue and red runs and be willing to tour around the ski area at a good pace. Flights are not included. The trek covers some of the best mountain scenery in Albania and we also cross the border into Montenegro where we visit stunning Lake Plava and stay for one night. On most days the walks are linear leading to the next village on the route. However, there are 2 occasions when we will stay two nights in a village which gives us the opportunity to do a circular walk to get the best from our experience and also offers the chance to have a rest day for those who prefer a mix of walking and relaxation. During our trek we will mainly stay in village houses which offer traditional Albanian food along with a chance to see how local people live. On arrival and departure we stay in hotels in the cities of Shkodra and the capital Tirana. Price includes: 11 nights full board – 2 nights in city hotels, 2 nights mountain hotels; 7 nights village guesthouses; all transport; airport transfer meeting certain flights. Single rooms available in the 2 city hotels if you book early – £20 per night supplement. 02–13 Aug (Tue–Sat)

Further Afield… January – Costa Rica – NEW! Costa Rica – a tropical jewel of vivid colours, lush, virginal rainforest, simmering volcanoes, stunning beaches and wondrous wildlife! With a good infrastructure, visionary sustainability initiatives and no standing army the hospitable Costa Rican people are very proud of their little slice of paradise. Our birding and wildlife holiday offers an unforgettable experience. After resting overnight in San Jose we travel into the mountains for a few days to take in the pristine cloud forests of Monteverde and Santa Elena which drip with mist, mossy vines, sprouting ferns and gushing creeks. After this we travel to the Pacific Ocean and stay in Jaco for four nights. From here we take a boat trip along the River Tarcoles, surrounded by seasonally flooded forest and a host of interesting wildlife. On the other days we visit the two stunningly beautiful National Parks of Carara and San Antonio Manuel. Carara National Park is one of Costa Rica’s most famous birding destinations with birds typical of both tropical dry forest and tropical wet forest. Meanwhile, the warm sparkling blue waters of San Antonio Manuel National Park offer unique swimming opportunities as well as playful monkeys and lush tropical forest. We leave Jaco to spend our last three days at the water bound National Park of Tortuguero, which fringes the Caribbean Sea. Here we stay in a remote, bustling, little village with strong Afro-Caribbean roots, and take a relaxed boat-borne safari through the extensive series of natural canals which wind through thick jungle forest and may see shy caiman, river turtles, monkeys and sloths. Price includes: 12 nights bed and breakfast, 8 packed lunches, entrance fees for the National Parks, local guide fees, boat trip, ferry trip, private minibus transport throughout. Single rooms available on some evenings – £20 per night supplement. 16-29 Jan (Sat-Fri)

April – Intermediate Nepal The incredible experience of trekking in Nepal need not be purely for high-level walkers. The Hindu and Buddhist temples of Kathmandu, the serenity of Phewa Tal (‘Fish Tail Lake’) in Pokhara, and the breath taking views of the Himalaya are all features of this intermediate holiday to Nepal – including a 6-day circular trek to Gorapani in the Annapurna region. At Gorapani, weather permitting, we’ll climb Poon Hill and watch the sun rise over the magnificent Annapurna range. There’ll be bamboo forests and huge rhododendron trees in flower, monkeys in the trees, steep stone steps that we’ll take as slowly as we need, and little villages dotting the terraced hillsides where we’ll stop for tea. While staying at Pokhara before the trek, we will have a warm-up walk to Sunrise View at Sarankot, and maybe cross the lake by boat to climb to the Peace Temple for another special view of the mountains. Our accommodation over this holiday will vary from 3-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara to simple tea houses on the trek (basic accommodation with clean rooms and filtered water. Some have squat toilets). Luggage is transported for you – you carry a daypack only. Price includes: 13 nights in Nepal in twin rooms & all costs except visa, entrance fees, tips, & snacks/evening meals when not on trek. The trek combines spectacular mountain scenery with incredible cultural diversity as it traverses through rural farms and villages. The trail leads towards the deep gorge between Hiunchuli and Machhapuchare (Fishtail) peaks and through the dense rain and bamboo forest of the narrow Modi Khola valley then on to the Sanctuary – a breathtaking amphitheatre of snowy peaks including Annapurna itself (8,091m). A truly special place that will remain in your memory forever. Our return journey descends through the lush terraced Modi Khola valley to the vibrant town of Pokhara where we have time to explore the lake and the shopping! October – Whale Trail, South Africa – BACK AGAIN! This wonderful holiday starts with 4 days in a good Cape Town B&B enjoying beautiful walks like the Lion’s Head, the Contour Path, Kirstenbosch Gardens, and maybe Table Mountain by cable car. We then drive to the stunning De Hoope Whale Trail above the Indian Ocean – a 5-day intermediate trek where you carry a day pack only and walk through the wild scenery and flowers of the De Hoope Nature Reserve to a stretch of coast where the Southern Right whales come inshore to mate or give birth. Sometimes as many as 50 of these sea giants can be seen at one time from the cliff path where we’ll be walking. We can also dip down to swim in rock pools and walk along beautiful stretches of beach before climbing to our next ‘cottage’ on the cliffs. These cottages each have a kitchen, shared rooms with bunk beds, solar power and warm showers (usually!). After the trek, we stay at the Windsor Hotel in the small resort town of Hermanus for 2 nights – walking in a nature reserve, eating out overlooking the sea and the whales, or taking a whale watching boat trip. We will then detour to Cape Point – the very tip of Africa – on our way back to our Cape Town B&B for the last 2 nights. In Cape Town before and after the trek there’ll be time to visit Robben Island, the townships, the market, the Waterfront, and we will eat out in great restaurants. WalkingWomen WalkingWomen has grown from small beginnings in 2000 to involve many differently talented women who tell you about themselves on these pages. However, it has also been shaped by the rich contributions of all the women who come on the holidays – funny, enthusiastic, generous, fascinating, friendly, and all so widely different! You make it special for us too – thank you! Sue Donovan I have enjoyed walking and the outdoors since I was a child. It has been the perfect antidote to the stresses of life, as well as an opportunity to watch nature and take photographs. I am at my happiest when I am walking in the countryside and taking photos. I have worked as a research scientist, as a management consultant, and I am also a business and life coach. When I discovered WalkingWomen in 2008, I was hooked! Then I discovered Diana wanted to sell WW, and some wonderful women helped me buy it.

Yvonne Hosker Yvonne’s been leading holidays for WalkingWomen for over 10 years mainly in the Lakes, Peaks, Alps and Greece. She’s an independent facilitator based in Manchester whose work involves training and consultancy with government agencies, local authorities, national parks, etc. – focussing on access to the countryside and recreation/conservation management. In her spare time she’s an active mountaineer and cyclist and knows a fair amount about birds, flowers, landscape history, etc.

Lorraine Roberts I’ve spent the past 20 years nurturing my dual personality – living in the city and escaping to the mountains of North Wales, Lake District and Scotland when possible. As a founder member of a London walking group, I’ve led walks in the South East and further afield. In the past few years I have discovered the delights of Europe’s mountains - the Alps, Pyrenees, Greece.

Madeline Holloway I am a freelance ecologist – protecting water voles, badgers, bats and birds. I’ve always loved natural history - listening to the song of different birds, hunting for orchids, discovering what is on ‘our doorstep’ if we know what to look for, or walking in the fells in search of wildlife rarities. At other times I love music, especially jazz and playing the piano! Raffa Carzaniga I love skiing – it is one of my passions, and I learnt to ski early in Italy where I was born. I also have a passion for bugs and their secret life (I am a biologist most of the time!), photography, and the Arts. In the past I guided for WWF in Italy. I love caring about people and sharing adventures, and look forward to sharing another fun WW skiing holiday with you!

Marian Sutton I have always loved nature and traveling. After working as a photographer I returned to uni to study the Earth Sciences and Conservation. Living in Yorkshire gives me easy access to the visited the Canaries, which started a fascination with the archipelago, and the Americas beyond…

Sue Penn I have worked variously as an ecologist and a teacher. I’ve always enjoyed walking and scrambling in mountains and wild areas, from Chile to the Lake District and Scotland, so I took it further and got my Mountain Leadership qualification. Walking with women allows women to share good company and to gain confidence in their own skills.

Clare Kelly In 1994 a friend invited me on the Annapurna Sanctuary trek in Nepal. This was the first time I had done any serious walking. 5 years later I was back in Annapurna as a guide and haven’t stopped guiding since! My background helps in my day job as office manager in our Sheffield office. I am here to help ensure your holiday runs smoothly so do get in touch if you need any advice. 40

Catherine Murphy I have studied, lived and worked in rural areas of Britain for most of my life, settling in Shropshire over 30 years ago. It has been my greatest pleasure to explore the greater countryside through fell walking and cycle rides generally finding wild swimming opportunities and interesting tea rooms en route. Finding out that others enjoyed these trips as much as me, has encouraged me to develop short breaks and holidays especially close to water. The variety of outdoor activities changes through the seasons, I have lately been freelancing with Shropshire Wildlife and National Trusts leading walks and craft workshops using foraged material of their reserves.

Barbara Hamilton As a child I was resistant to ‘route marches’ taken with my family, but I now count myself very lucky to have finally discovered the joys of walking – the best reward for mind, body and soul. I run my own company and organize walks for women in my spare time. I will walk anywhere from the streets of London to the wilds of Scotland! Pam Satterthwaite I grew up in the Lake District and Northumberland and have always enjoyed the countryside. I love travelling and walking - both great antidotes to my busy working life in social work. As a member of a northeast walking group, I lead walks throughout the region. I look forward to sharing this beautiful & relatively undiscovered area with lots of walking women.

Brenda Whisker Walking - whether it be mountains, valleys, moorland or woods – I love it all and have been doing it for many years. Walking for me is not just about physical exercise; it’s about good company, conversations, fun, time to observe, breathe deep and relax. Living in the South Pennines, I love exploring its open moors, deep cut valleys, geological history and rich industrial heritage too.

Barbara Bailey I grew up in London but am a country girl at heart. I try to escape to the hills or the low level walks of my adopted Suffolk countryside as much as possible, especially after a stressful week working in the NHS. Come rain or come shine, it doesn’t matter, there is nothing like it on earth especially when shared with new friends!

Chrissie Amey I have lived in the Quantock Hills for 30 years and have led walks here for the last four. I’ve come to love their unspoilt beauty and wonderful walking opportunities. I also work in the local FE college with learners recovering from mental health problems. In my past I had a background in dressmaking and fashion, and I also managed a small herd of milking goats! I now live in an eco house and enjoy growing my own vegetables.

Gaynor Rees Strolling through the countryside the company is fabulous, the women are amazing, the birds are singing and the sun is shining. Well, it might be raining, but the waterproofs are holding and anyway, the Galaxy tastes better with every step. Come on, what are you waiting for?

Jo Bird Although born a Londoner, I’ve lived in Yorkshire – Bradford and then Hebden Bridge – since my mid 20s. I feel so lucky to have wild and beautiful countryside on my doorstep, and easy access to the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and all the other wonderful places for walking in the north. I love to walk wherever I visit as its such a great way to see a place and meet new and interesting people. I really enjoy organising walks and making them into fun and interesting days out for myself and others. I love travelling, rucksack on my back, and have have done some wonderful walking abroad, the highlights being in Nepal and New Zealand.

Pauline Gertig I have had a love of the outdoors since childhood, as walking in the countryside offers the opportunity for enjoyment, reflection and gives me a feeling of connectedness to the natural world. I regularly walk in the Tyne Valley with friends, family and my rescue whippet.

Clara Fleming I escaped Manchester city life for the Lake District over 15 years ago and still haven’t climbed all the mountains here – but I am trying! I’m a qualified mountain leader and ski leader and I’m always planning new adventures and discovering wonderful places to hike or ski, not only in Europe, North America and New Zealand but also here right on my doorstep. I really enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for outdoor adventure with other women and I love the group’s sense of achievement on reaching a destination, whether it’s the top of a mountain or the teashop at the end of a great day’s walk.

As a Yoga practitioner of 30 years experience I enjoy the physical and mental benefits yoga offers. As a teacher of over 20 years enabling other women to discover and explore the benefits of yoga is a truly rewarding endeavour. The combination of Yoga and walking offers the chance to develop a sense of well being in beautiful surroundings.

Anne Edelston Anne guides some of our Turkish Coast Walking & Sailing holidays. She is based on East Meets West, a traditional Turkish gulet. “After some time of enjoying the view of these glorious mountains from the sea, I became curious about what I could find within them. I never imagined that I would stumble across ruined Roman villages, ancient Greek settlements, shepherds still living very basic, rural lives, beautiful spring flowers and wonderful views to boot. I was hooked, Adil would drop me off in a little bay and I would set off on a mission to see if I could meet him at the next bay. Having guided more than 30 groups I now wonder why I hadn’t discovered the joys of walking much sooner!”

Anita Grey I have worked in my beloved Snowdonia and worldwide for over 25 years running team & confidence building, and trainings for all levels and ages, including women’s groups. I am an International Mountain Leader (BAIML) and I teach both Alexander Technique and climbing. I believe we learn best when we are at ease and having fun! Ros Townsend I live in Cape Town and look forward to sharing my favourite walks with you. My love of walking developed slowly from simple walks into adventurous scrambles and then rock climbing. Whatever the level, the feeling of freedom, independence, and of being at one with nature is very special. It refreshes the soul – you remember to laugh again and enjoy life.

Mo McRoberts Mountains, mountains everywhere just waiting to be explored – so come on walking women! When I finished my Post Grad in Outdoor Education my first job was working at Outward Bound, Ullswater and despite the weather, the Lakes is where I still live and work. There’s always something to do in the mountains in any season. Downhill skiing for the sheer rush, ski touring across arctic Norway for white silence, wild swimming in all those refreshing lakes in the Pyrenees or camping and hiking in big mountains for big adventures in America, Canada and New Zealand. It’s not just getting to the top, it’s the emotions and feelings experienced on the way and the camaraderie of walking with others that makes each journey unique.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my holiday with WW. I shared a room with a complete stranger, but because we shared a common interest in walking and scenery within minutes we were at ease with each other. Our guide was very helpful, considerate and paid equal attention to everyone, so we all felt included. I would certainly recommend WW holidays to my friends and look forward to receiving your next brochure ‘hot off the press’! Many thanks for a wonderful, invigorating short break”. Jane 42

Booking Conditions We cannot return your deposit if you cancel, though it may be possible to put a cancelled deposit towards another new holiday within the same calendar year if we are able to fill your original place. We will return the balance of your holiday if we are able to refill your place. We will deduct an admin fee of £20 in both these situations. We cannot adjust the price of the holiday if you arrive late, have to leave early, or if you decide not to walk on one or more of the days. With our foreign holidays, we cannot accept responsibility if you miss your flight due to arriving later than the check-in time we have stated. We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule an advertised walk for reasons of safety, or to change the advertised guide should she suddenly become unavailable. The decision of the WalkingWomen guide running the holiday has to be final in matters of safety, route choice, inclusion of dogs other than Assistance dogs, and questions as to the composition of the walking group if you have chosen a grade that is well beyond your capability. Dogs are only allowed on certain holidays, i.e. if the holiday title says “Dogs Allowed” While every reasonable effort is made to ensure that the information provided in this brochure and on our website is accurate, no guarantees for the currency or accuracy of information are made. We reserve the right to make significant changes to holiday details should it become necessary due to situations outside our control. In the unlikely event of WalkingWomen cancelling a holiday, the money you have paid us will be refunded in full. We reserve the right to cancel your booking or change any of the facilities, services or prices described in our brochures or website. We will try to advise you of any changes known at the time of booking. We plan the arrangements for your tour many months in advance and may occasionally have to make changes, most of which are minor. Single supplements (supplement usually payable, single room based on availability at the time you book – book early for the best choice), Extra nights may be available before or after the holiday at our rates (booking fee £5 per night). Insurance Insurance essential abroad If you book a foreign holiday with WalkingWomen it is essential that you have sickness and injury insurance. We will require proof of insurance on arrival and will be unable to take women walking if they are not insured. Insurance against your having to cancel is highly recommended on ALL holidays. It also pays if travelling in Europe to carry an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card – replacing the E1.11) to reduce any medical charges payable at the time if you are ill or hurt. In addition we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance to cover UK holidays. For competitive insurance try: Columbus Direct Travel Insurance on 0800 068 0060 or Essential Travel on 0871 360 2712. Age UK is very competitive if you are over 65yrs: 0800 389 4852. See also Direct Travel Insurance (www.direct-travel. co.uk). Please let us know if you find an insurance company offering equal value and costing less!
