Daniel Albone (12 September 1860 – 30 October 1906) was an English inventor, manufacturer and cyclist. He invented the first successful light farm tractor, and the Ivel Safety bicycle.[1] During the late 19th century, power on farms was provided mainly by Ivel Agricultural Motor 1902 horses. Steam-powered portable engines and self-propelled traction Power 6 kW (8.0 hp) engines had been introduced for agricultural work from about 1850, but the traction engines were too heavy for direct ploughing of the Weight 403 kg heavy soil found in Britain. In the 1890s, internal combustion engines Maximum 2540 kg (2.5 started to become more common, but these were stationary load tons) engines for belt-driven agricultural machinery. An oil-powered traction engine had been developed, by Hornsby-Ackroyd in 1897, Maximum 5 mph but like the steam-powered traction engines, this was very heavy at speed (8.0 km/h) 8600 kg (8.5 tons). 2900 cc (177 Albone conceived a light-weight petrol-powered general purpose Engine size cubic inches) agricultural vehicle. By November 1901 he had completed his tractor design, and filed for a patent on 15 February 1902. On 12 Cylinders 2 December 1902 he formed Ivel Agricultural Motors Limited. The Stroke 4 other directors were Selwyn Edge, Charles Jarrott, John Hewitt and Lord Willoughby. He called his machine the Ivel Agricultural Motor, the word 'tractor' did not come into common use until later.[4] Dan's "tractor" won silver medal at the Royal Agricultural Show, in 1903 and 1904; and in February 1904 an Ivel Agricultural Motor won a Gold Medal in the ChesterPloughing Match held at Waverton, this being the first occasion on which a competition of that kind had been open to mechanically propelled ploughs.[5] About 500 were built, and many were exported all over the world. The original engine was made by Payne & Co. of Coventry. After 1906, French Aster engines were used. Over time it became heavier and more powerful, but it failed to keep pace with its rivals. The company declined after 1910, and in 1920 it went into receivership. The assets were bought by United Motor Industries Limited. The Ivel Agricultural Motor was light, powerful and compact. It had one front wheel, with solid rubber tyre, and two large rear wheels like a modern tractor. The engine used water cooling, by evaporation. It had one forward and one reverse gear. A pulley wheel on the left hand side allowed it to be used as a stationary engine, driving a wide range of agricultural machinery. The 1903 sale price was £300. This article shamelessly stolen from Wikipedia. For further reading, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Albone

RESTRICTED ACCESS TO CLUB GROUNDS Due to increased activity in Morgan St, the club grounds need to be locked to reduce public access. There are now 2 padlocks on the chain at the main gates, one padlock for club members keyed the same as the club rooms, the second padlock for Wagga City Council access. Pedestrian access is still available over the foot bridge.

LAUGHTER THE BEST MEDICINE Time to create our own laughter. This photo was taken at Canowindra Motors. John Snedden is looking down upon members who are checking out a shed full of Holdens. What is he thinking or about to say? Entries to Ed please.

Samples: “Go Ford and multiply”, “If only we could harness that enthusiasm” MODERN RUN TO ORANGE Friday 20 March We left from the Holgate's house just after 1:00pm and drove to Canowindra, collecting the Fosters and Deacons at Wallendbeen and coffee at Cowra. Dinner was a Chinese banquet at the local golf club. Saturday 21 March After Saturday morning breakfast at a local pub, we visited the Holden dealership and viewed his collection of GMH products plus a Ford. Others visited the pre-historic fossilised fish museum. Next, we headed to Manildra for lunch at the pub followed by an afternoon at the Manildra historic picture theatre viewing a series of old news reels, then an opportunity to purchase old movie posters from the attached shop. Late afternoon, we proceeded to Orange, staying at the West End Motor Lodge. Dinner was with the Orange vintage car club at their clubrooms, an old school building. Sunday 22 March After breakfast at the motel, we departed Orange at 9:00am for Molong to visit a junk or collectables yard, then to John Lee’s collection of Buicks in Molong, followed by the tractor collection of Brian and Norm McKenzie. After checking out the tractors we returned to Molong for lunch then headed home or elsewhere. Those attending were: John S, Sue & Craig K, Pam & Ray T, Chris & Pete B, Rob & Stu L, Cheryl & Brian H, Chris & Ian H, Colleen & Gerald R, Ruth & Doug F, Betty & Kevin D, Mick B, Merv H, Bob M, A special thanks to Bob for organising this run which was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants. Rumour has it that Bob is already working on his next run. Stay tuned. See two pages of photos, this edition of Reflection. Ed.

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Officer asks a young engineer fresh out of Uni, "And what starting salary are you looking for?" The engineer replies, "In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package." The interviewer inquires, "Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a GT Falcon?" The engineer sits up straight and says, "Wow! Are you kidding?" The interviewer replies, "Yeah, but you started it."

APOLOGY Ed sincerely apologises for blindly accepting MS Word spell check which recommended that I change Geffrey to Geoffrey. Future Editors please note.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.
