PROGRAM
CLUB ASSEMBLY - AUTUMN
YX student Fiona has sent a message indicating that she is having an ‘amazing’ time and lots of fun on the Australian Adventure tour through the Outback and down the east coast. She has been camel riding and diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Club Signature Event -The suggestions gathered on the night including those mentioned by Sid Clarke during the brainstorming session will be collated and sent to members for future discussion. Sid Clarke made a special point of saying that children enjoy farm experiences such as petting kids, lambs or calves. Lakeside - New member Ted Wolfe raised a point of interest regarding the club’s lakeside location and suggested we adopt water-themed or hydro projects such as raising funds to maintain the hydrotherapy pool at Wagga Base, supporting Snowy Hydro careflight helicopter, adding a water slide to Apex Park at Lake Albert, in conjunction with local schools hold a lakeside event at the golf club, boat club or park, planting trees or doing something for the future Riverside Precinct and so on. These suggestions will be added to the list of suggestions for a signature event even though Bill Shaw reminded members the club should complete present projects before starting new ventures.

Senses Garden - Ray King gave a short presentation on the gardens at the Ethel Forrest Centre as established as a club service project in 2006-7. He then showed pictures of their present state showing maintenance is needed to remove algae & debris and re-align leaning lighting poles. Action - It was agreed that the club undertake service work to bring the gardens back to their previous state. Ray King will arrange a suitable date for the working bee. Fundraising Major Projects - Sunflower House - Continue to apply for funding from all sources. Currently hold about $27 000 of $100 000 being sought to carry out works costing between $ 60100, 000. Extra committee members have been sourced. Weekly Dinner Program - President explained that as a result of the SWOT analysis and the club visioning carried out last year, the program offered was chosen to reflect members’ requests. It provided guest speakers from outside and within the club on topics of interest and to further understanding of Rotary and its many projects as well as providing vocational speakers here and off-site, ladies’ nights and fellowship with other service clubs. The 5th Wednesday of the month has been set aside specifically for fellowship and fun for club members. President Phillip thanked dinner program co-ordinator Doug Masterson for his efforts providing a balanced program using the plan, especially when arrangements needed to be adjusted. Doug noted the club has had good speakers and has made them feel welcome on arrival. He also asked if members were happy with rostered responsibilities and indicated he would like to stepdown after a few years in this role. Amalgamation of Districts – Doug Masterson queried the status of this idea. President Phillip Tome responded that the Council of Legislation 18 months ago reduced number of members per district from 1200 to 1100. Currently District 9700 has 1160 members. DG Geoff Tancred advised that we can’t be complacent but we are meeting RI requirements. District is not currently affected by no. of clubs per district as 9700 is well above minimum no. of clubs per district with 40 clubs. Glove Prosthesis for Stroke Victims – Doug Masterson requested that the club make enquiries about this item seen on TV as a possible service project. Peter Keith volunteered to follow it up. Mt Austin High School (i) Liaison - Youth Director Gavin Davies was thanked for making contact as was Nim Weerakoon, a Science teacher at the school and Sam Fisher, an English teacher for their interest in maintaining stronger connections between the school and the club. This needs to be continued into the future. During a visit to the school, President outlined the many Youth programs at Learning Support team meeting, referring them to District and club websites. Follow up was provided. (ii) Meeting 7 May - Past and potential participants have been invited to attend a Rotary meeting on 7 May to inform members of their experiences. These students have attended RYPEN, Murray Darling School of Freshwater Research and are applying for NYSF. Teachers will also be attending with them. (iii) School fundraising to assist NYSF students and eventually other participants in Rotary programs is being organised by the students and their teacher. They are currently selling boxes of Cadbury chocolates then raffling Easter eggs. Thanks were offered to those members who had contributed eggs or rabbits to the prize pool. (iv) Request for use of BBQ and manpower - An offer has been received giving permission for Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga Kooringal

MAHS to hold barbecues outside Duffy Bros in the future. The school would like to take up this opportunity with the assistance of the Kooringal club understanding that the BBQ can only be used by club members. Are members willing to man the BBQ on their behalf with student/teacher/parent assistance? (v) NYSF – need to organise a panel to ‘mock interview’ the 3 boys as preparation for their NYSF interview. Leave of Absence - Members need to notify the Attendance Officer if they are absent. To make it easier for long term absences over two weeks, it was agreed that members could complete a copy of the sample form presented at the meeting, thereby ensuring the board, the treasurer and the attendance officer are all notified and adjustments made accordingly. Peter Keith suggested that a copy be emailed to members with bulletin. Dinner badges – Club board has been asked to consider replacing unreadable dinner badges. International Night - Coolamon RC is holding a fundraiser - Country Kenya in Ganmain on Saturday 10th May. Money raised benefits rhinos and elephants through RAGES Rotarian Action Group for Endangered Species. Harry Nixon requested numbers of those attending. .

RYLA
FOR MEMBERS’ INFORMATION RYLA – Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
RYLA is a five day program that can be likened to District Conference on an extended sleepover with additional activities to develop leadership and team building. It was held at Camp Kurrajong on Oura Road last week but we should all have a better understanding of this program for young adults aged 18-28 years to order to approach future participants. It was lead by past participants (4 females/1 male) with the presence of experienced Rotarian couple (Ron & Marilyn Walter) acting as house parents. RC of Wagga Wagga Murrumbidgee co-ordinated this year’s RYLA program again. Presenters included Rotarian PDG John Egan, Charles Tarbey (Century 21 Australia) Patricia Hawe who has climbed the Kokoda track, Deborah Braines (Ronald McDonald House), Tim Phelps (GTES), Sandy Green (Wagga Police), Peter Hastie, Pip, Leigh and Whitto (Star FM) , Jane Gentle (Junee Pharmacy), Mark & Christine Hillis and Matt Dombrovski (Commins Hendriks). DID YOU KNOW? These may help some members who don’t like speaking when introducing or thanking a speaker. Reference - RYLA handbook with some additions for club purposes.
Introducing a Speaker Take 5 minutes to acquaint yourself with the speaker. Ask them about themselves and what they plan to talk about. If you are introducing someone who has a title (eg a doctor), include the title as well as their first and last names in the introduction and awards they’ve received. eg Dr Ray King OAM Give a brief biographical history and a few words about what they’ll be talking about. Invite them to the front of the room. Thanking a Speaker Take a few notes about what you find interesting whilst the speaker is presenting. Thank them on behalf of the entire group, and say why you are thanking them. Present the certificate of appreciation and explain the donation given in their name. Offer to shake hands then invite the group to give a round of applause. Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga Kooringal
