Line Array Sound Reinforcement Enclosures The Elevation Series line array loudspeaker enclosures and subwoofers utilize three newly patented technologies by Tom Danley of Danley Sound Labs to create a vertical array sound reinforcement solution for touring applications or fixed installations. As a touring solution, Elevation Series is a fully scalable line array system, and can be easily reconfigured for virtually any sized venue from small system applications like theaters with fewer than 1,000 seats to large scale full auditorium shows, convention centers, arenas and outdoor amphitheater-style events. The Elevation Series is also an ideal fixed installation enclosure, and can be used as single or multiple distributed arrays for stadium and arena sound reinforcement. The system allows unmatched intelligibility and cost-effective coverage even in difficult, highly reverberant acoustic environments. Proprietary flyware allows touring versions of the Elevation Series line array cabinets and subwoofers to be flown together in compact vertical arrays. For touring applications where flown systems are not required, the same Elevation Series flyware can be used for effectively and safely ground stacking subwoofers and line array enclosures. A more cost effective install hardware is available for permanent fixed installation applications where secure arraying is required, but quick set-up and teardown isn’t necessary to the system spec. Designed and manufactured in North America for VTC Pro Audio by Yorkville Sound, all Elevation Series enclosures employ solid void free 5/8-inch 11-ply Baltic birch, and use high quality speaker components for unmatched long-term reliability even under the most demanding touring or install applications.

Line Array Enclosure Elevation Series line array cabinets solve the limitations presented in conventional loudspeaker design using the Synergy Horn (patent pending) and Paraline lens technologies invented by Tom Danley and licensed to VTC Pro Audio and Yorkville Sound. While horizontal dispersion must be wide enough to deliver effective room coverage, precise control and focusing of vertical dispersion is essential to maintaining a well-behaved, coherent wave with a minimum of cabinet interference, comb filtering or lobing. Therefore, one of the most difficult aspects in the design of a line array loudspeaker is finding an effective way to control the vertical dispersion at high frequencies. This can be achieved if the vertical dispersion is tightly focused into a narrow, slightly curved wave front that does not interfere with the waves emanating from the cabinets immediately above and below. Ideally this wave front would be flat, but a slightly curved wave front avoids gaps in the vertical coverage when the array is articulated in the same plane. Conventional high frequency horns as used in typical point source loudspeaker design create a wave front with pronounced curvature. If used in a vertical array this degree of curvature leads to lobing and other forms of phase cancellation between enclosures with subsequent comb filtering in various audience areas and degradation of the overall sound quality.

Paraline Element (patent pending) The Paraline element is a horn configuration that provides an effective impedance transformation while at the same time providing a way to adjust the path length in a continuously variable way, such that the high frequency dispersion pattern produced has the same characteristics as that of a much deeper conventional horn. In order to have the dispersion from two separate sources combine without interference, it is necessary to have each source produce a very specific radiation pattern. This is particularity true in a line array where the vertical dispersion angle of the high frequencies must be MUCH narrower and where a conventional horn design would be far too deep to be practical. The Paraline element eliminates the impractical depth needed to make an array of conventional horns that would sum into a non-interfering source. In the case of the EL210, a vertical dispersion pattern of 10° is achieved with a Paraline element less than one inch deep, where a conventional horn would be several metres in length. To control and maintain well-defined horizontal dispersion pattern, the Paraline element is mounted on a conical horn.

Synergy Horn The Synergy Horn successfully couples the radiation from multiple drivers into a single horn configuration. In the EL210, two 10-inch low /mid frequency drivers are mounted to the Synergy Horn along with two compression drivers mounted on a Paraline horn element. This coaxial horn arrangement uses the entire front area of the enclosure as the horn mouth for both mid and high frequencies. This maximizes the horn size, improving directional control at lower frequencies (longer wavelengths) while maintaining reasonable overall enclosure size. This unique design concept delivers the highly effective performance of a single horn/driver system with high sensitivity (efficient power transfer), a welldefined, predictable coverage with exceptionally even frequency response and excellent directivity control. This makes the Synergy Horn and Paraline lens technologies, when combined, the ideal basis for a truly modular vertical line array loudspeaker enclosure. Available in either touring array versions (EL210t) or as an install cabinet (EL210i) the Elevation Series enclosures are built in North America using B&C 10-inch drivers, BMS compression drivers mounted to the patented Paraline horn lens and 5/8-inch void free marine grade Baltic birch plywood.

Subwoofer In real world applications where the measured SPL is comparable for a conventional vented horn design and a tapped horn design, the diaphragm excursion of the driver is greatly reduced due to the acoustical loading of the tapped horn. This decrease in excursion will translate directly into lower distortion, smoother flatter frequency response and far higher output capability from the Tapped Horn subwoofer design. Built for long term reliability in even the most demanding touring application (ELS212t) or fixed installation (ELS212i), the Elevation Series Tapped Horn subwoofers use high quality proprietary 12-inch neodymium drivers by 18 Sound and are built in North America using a solid void-free marine grade Baltic birch plywood cabinet construction.

The Elevation Series ELS212 Subwoofer uses an innovative new technology developed by Tom Danley called a Tapped Horn design (patent pending). The Tapped Horn maximizes driver efficiency by allowing radiation from the rear of the driver to enter the system at a tap, located further down the horn flare towards the mouth. This tap means output from the rear of the driver is effectively de-coupled from the system at extremely low frequencies, but at higher frequencies it becomes coupled to the system. When this occurs, the output from the front of the driver (at the throat of the horn) and the output from the rear of the driver (entering at the tap) is in phase, effectively doubling the driver’s radiating surface area (Sd) as far as the horn is concerned.

Digital Loudspeaker Management System The DLMS4080 Digital Loudspeaker Management System handles total control of the Elevation Series enclosures. The four Inputs and eight outputs of the DLMS4080 can be routed in multiple configurations to meet any system requirement. Full control and configuration of the system can be done in real time from the front panel or with the intuitive PC based graphic user interface software via the on-board RS232, Ethernet or USB port when more complex system control is required. A complete set of system control parameters including individual level control and compression for every input, delay, polarity, level control and limiting for every output as well as an 8-band parametric and 31-band graphic EQ per channel are included with the DLMS4080. Precise frequency control is achieved down to a 1Hz resolution. Multiple system setups can be stored in 32 onboard memory locations and the DLMS4080 has an onboard lockout for full system security when used in installation applications.

Quick set up and teardown is critical in high quality sound reinforcement. The Elevation Series’ exclusive integrated rigging hardware for the EL210t cabinets and ELS212t subwoofers allow enclosures to be easily and securely locked to one another by simply swinging a hinged bar into place and securing it with the included quick release pins.

The ELB16 bumper can handle up to 16 EL-210t boxes in a flown vertical array. Elevation Series ELS212t subwoofers can be flown in the same vertical array with the EL210t full range enclosures for convenient fully flown touring systems. The versatile ELB16 bumper is also the ideal platform for building secure, level vertical ground stacks for venues where a flown array is not the most cost effective system solution.
