New member, Susan Lang strikes a high ball.

We need YOU! There are many ways you can help keep our club strong and healthy. One way is to become a VTC Director. Five Directors will be voted in at our Ventura Tennis Day on September 5th. After the fall “transition,” the new Board will take over January 1st. Nominations for Directors are open now, and will close on August 15. We would like to make sure that our Board represents all our members: every age, sex, and ability level. Meetings are held monthly, usually the 1st Wednesday of the month, from 6-8:30 p.m. The meeting location changes periodically, so check our website for details. Another great way to lead the club is to become an officer. Officers are chosen by the Board, and positions include Newsletter Editor, Membership Chair, Archivist, and Social Chair. Throughout the year we also need tournament directors and volunteers to help run our events. If it’s your first tournament, we’ll pair you up with an experienced tournament director to help you learn the ropes. A third contribution you can make is just to share your thoughts and ideas about the club. You can call or email the Directors or Officers, and we want to encourage people to attend the monthly Board meetings, which are open to all our members. Come join the fun! ~ Andy Hoerer, Newsletter Editor

PRESIDENT’S CORNER Chuck and your VTC Board have been working closely with the city’s park department to get our new 3-row bleacher installed in time for our biggest event of the year—Ventura Tennis Day!

Greetings VTC Members: Summer is upon us and there are many things underway. Besides tournaments and tennis gatherings, Ventura Tennis Day will be held Saturday, Sept. 5th, over Labor Day Weekend. That's a fun day of adult and kids clinics and social tennis plus Lester's famous BBQ! All is free of charge and it's a great opportunity to bring friends and let them get a taste of our VTC, and join if they're interested. That will also be the time to vote for your 2010 Board. Some of us from this year's Board will offer our services for another year, but this is a great time for you to get involved in your club. If you have an interest in taking part in the Club's direction, contact a Board member or send us an e-mail and we'll make sure you're on the nominee's list. Lastly, our joint venture with the City for a set of bleachers at the teaching court should be in place soon and that should be a nice addition. Thanks for your participation and donations for this project. This will provide a nice place to cheer (and heckle) our championship matches and we'll have a plaque to promote our great club. Best wishes and have a safe summer--Chuck Holmstrom

Retro 2009

Welcome Back! Our 4th Annual VTC Retro Racket Tournament The calendar said May 16, 2009, but it looked like May of 1978 on the Camino Real Park courts! Spectators saw groovy shirts, white tennis balls, and classic rackets from decades past, while the hi-fi blasted tunes from Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Paul Simon, Linda Ronstadt, and Crosby, Stills, & Nash.

Dave Dike goes all-out “Old School” in his classic tennis whites.

VTC

NEWS

We had 20 players total. Eight men battled in the singles division, with Randy defeating Carl in a tough final. In doubles, we rotated partners, courts, and even rackets, thanks to Dave Dike, who brought out an amazing variation of rackets to choose from. There was also lots of chips, pizza, and beverages. A special thanks to Dave, Gary, White tennis balls contrast with colorful shirts and rackets. Rich, and Chuck for helping out.

Men’s Singles Tournament May 31 A total of 19 players participated in the Men’s Singles Tournament on May 31, 2009. Round robin play in each division produced 4 semifinalists. In one of the 3.5 semis, Marcio Stelato defeated Vince Salvador 6-2. The other semifinal was a family affair, with father Doug Donald defeating son Loren Donald 6-2. The final between Marcio and Doug produced some excellent tennis. After the total 8 games played, the score was still knotted at 4 all. Doug prevailed in a spirited tie breaker with a score of 7-3 to be crowned the 3.5 champion. The 4.0 contestants were also not lacking in their ability to showcase some excellent tennis. In the first semi, Rich Brandon defeated Julio Cabral 10-5 in a Super tiebreaker. Mike Goldowitz bested Chuck Holmstrom 10-2 in the other semi. Rich and Mike played a very entertaining and competitive final. Rich, inspired by his enthusiastic fan base, played superb tennis to defeat Mike 10-7. Congratulations to our champions, Rich Brandon, (4.0) and Doug Donald (3.5). The Ventura Tennis Club would also like to welcome new members Vincent Luciani and Marvin Smith who competed in this tournament.

Mixed is always a SMASH ! On June 21, VTC hosted the Mixed Doubles Social event at Camino Park. The 17 players enjoyed good food, lots of sunshine and plenty of tennis. We played strictly no-stress, no scoring, and had no prizes. We played 6 games (no ad scoring) then switched partners. Thanks to all the players who participated! Linda Forsyth/Lester Tony

Ladies Social Mixed Doubles June 28, the ladies had their day at the park! The potluck style menu was varied and plentiful. After playing and eating, the ladies retired feeling they had a satisfying day of socializing and meeting new friends. It was also nice to see the ones who don't get out too often show up as well. Thanks for coming out and sharing the day! Till next time! Linda
