THE MATCH-UP

THE SERIES

On Sunday, Kansas City will make its first appearance at the new MetLife Stadium since the facility opened in 2010. The Chiefs will play their second-consecutive road game when the club faces the N.Y. Jets on Dec. 11. Kansas City is coming off of a thrilling 10-3 victory at Chicago (12/4) that saw the Chiefs defense continually make momentum changing plays throughout the contest. The Jets are coming off a 34-19 win at Washington (12/4) to improve their record to 7-5. In that game, the Jets used a 21-point fourth quarter to overcome a 13-10 deficit entering the final 15 minutes. Dating back to Oct. 2, the Chiefs defense is limiting opponents to 17.7 points per game. That total ranks fifth in the AFC and sixth in the NFL. San Francisco is allowing a league-low 12.1 ppg during that time period. Meanwhile, the Chiefs defense has been particularly efficient on thirddown, only allowing opponents to convert 30.4% of its third down attempts. That is the fourth-best mark in the NFL. LB Derrick Johnson leads the Chiefs defense with 136 tackles and is on pace for 181 stops, a total that would be the highest single-season mark in team history. Since Nov. 1, Johnson has tallied an astounding 59 tackles, an average of 11.8 tackles per game. LB Tamba Hali has a team-high 8.0 sacks to tie for sixth in the AFC. Over the past two seasons, the Chiefs linebacker has tallied 22.5 sacks. The club has returned two interceptions for touchdowns, including one by CB Brandon Flowers and one by S Kendrick Lewis. WR Dwayne Bowe leads the club with 59 receptions for 868 yards (14.7 avg.) with four touchdowns. He needs 132 more yards to record his third career 1,000-yard season and his second-consecutive such campaign, becoming only the fourth player in team history to accomplish that feat. K Ryan Succop has made 16 consecutive field goals, the longest streak in his career. That streak also ties for the fourth-longest in team history. CB Javier Arenas is third in the NFL with a 13.5-yard punt return average. Kansas City returns home to face Green Bay on Dec. 18 while the Jets travel to Philadelphia next Sunday.

The all-time series between Kansas City and the N.Y. Jets is tied at 1717-1 (.500). The Jets hold a 10-8-1 (.553) advantage in all games played in New York/New Jersey. The clubs have met at the Polo Grounds (3-1), Shea Stadium (2-5) and Giants Stadium (5-2-1). The Jets owns a two-game winning streak vs. Kansas City in New York/New Jersey by a combined seven points. The contest will mark the Chiefs first visit to the Jets new home, MetLife Stadium. Kansas City holds a 9-7 (.563) lead at home.

A LOOK BACK AT CHICAGO (12/4)

• Of the nine head coaches hired in 2009, only Jim Caldwell (Colts) and Rex Ryan (Jets) own more victories in their first three seasons than Todd Haley. The Chiefs are one of three teams to make a playoff appearance of the nine teams that made a head coaching change for the 2009 season.

• Kansas City did not allow a third-down conversion as Chicago finished the game 0-11 (0.0%) on third down. It is the first time the club did not allow a third-down conversion since accomplishing the feat vs. San Diego (9/20/98) when the Chargers were 0-10. • The Chiefs held the Bears to 181 total offensive yards, the fewest the club has allowed since permitting 166 yards vs. Oakland (9/20/09). • Kansas City limited Chicago to 88 net passing yards, the second time the club had held an opponent to 90 or fewer net passing yards. Those 3.0 sacks tied for the highest single-game total by a rookie in Chiefs history. NT Bill Maas had 3.0 sacks vs. Cleveland (9/30/84). • LB Derrick Johnson had a sack (-3.0 yards) of Hanie. Johnson now has 2.0 sacks (-10.0 yards) on the season and 16.0 (-111.0 yards) in his career. • LB Tamba Hali added a sack (-4.0 yards) of Hanie. He has 8.0 sacks (-54.0 yards) on the season and 49.5 sacks (-310.0 yards) for his career. Those 49.5 sacks rank fifth in team history. He needs 2.0 more to pass DE Mike Bell (51.0) for fourth. • DE Tyson Jackson had a sack (-10.0 yards) of Hanie. It was his first sack of the season and he now has 2.0 for his career. • S Jon McGraw registered a sack (-13.0 yards) of Hanie. He now has 2.0 sacks (-19.0 yards) in his career. KICKOFF COVERAGE UNITS The Kansas City kickoff coverage unit has been vital in forcing its opponents to travel a long field. Johnson had a career-high 147 tackles a year ago. The seventh-year pro has recorded 100+ tackles in back-to-back seasons for the first time in his career. During his career he has tallied 707 tackles, ranking eighth in team history. He is one of nine players in Chiefs history to record 700 or more tackles in their career. Johnson has 283 tackles from 2010-11. He needs 24 more stops this season to bypass LB Gary Spani for most tackles in consecutive seasons. Spani had 306 tackles from ’79-80.

THE LAST TIME N.Y. Jets 28, Chiefs 24 October 26, 2008 • Giants Stadium • 78,037 KANSAS CITY . . . . . . . . . . . . .0 N.Y. JETS. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .7 New York rallied for the winning score with 1:00 remaining to register a 28-24 win, spoiling the Chiefs upset bid. QB Tyler Thigpen was at the controls of a Chiefs offense that produced two TDs, 330 yards and did not have a turnover. The Chiefs defense picked off QB Brett Favre three times, including two by CB Brandon Flowers, who returned one for a 91-yard TD. The Jets got the ball first and Favre promptly moved his offense 73 yards on 10 plays, ending the drive with an 18-yard TD pass to RB Leon Washington for an early 7-0 lead. After the Chiefs punted on their first posession, Favre took the Jets back into scoring territory, but the Chiefs defense stiffened and K Jay Feely missed a 36-yard FG try. The Jets had the ball back as the first quarter was nearing an end, but Flowers picked off a Favre pass and returned the interception 27 yards to the Jets 38-yard line, setting up Kansas City’s initial score. A 19-yard pass from Thigpen to TE Tony Gonzalez capped a four-play, 38-yard TD drive after the Flowers INT to tie the score at 7-7. After trading punts, Thigpen continued his hot hand by completing his first 10 passes before throwing an incompletion with 3:59 to play in the second period. Defensively, the Chiefs picked off another Favre pass, as S Jarrad Page pulled down the INT. The Jets got a TD before the end of the quarter. Washington took a draw play 60 yards for his second TD of the day, making the score 14-7 in favor of the Jets. The Chiefs came right back and moved the ball into scoring position, thanks to a 30-yard run by RB Jamaal Charles and a 21-yard Thigpen-to-Gonzalez completion. Thigpen hit WR Mark Bradley in the end zone to tie the game at 14-14 as a replay review gave Kansas City the tying score. Beginning the third quarter out of a no-huddle, shotgun scheme, the Chiefs offense moved 66 yards on 12 plays. Thigpen completed passes to five different receivers in the drive, moving the ball to the Jets nineyard line before settling for a 30-yard K Connor Barth FG and a 17-14 lead. Late in the quarter Favre moved the Jets 72 yards on 13 plays that ended on a one-yard TD run by RB Thomas Jones. Jones’ TD gave the Jets a 21-17 lead as the third quarter came to a close. But the Chiefs got a huge lift midway through the fourth quarter on the second INT of the game by Flowers. He grabbed a pass intended for WR Chansi Stuckey and returned the INT for a 91-yard TD to give the Chiefs a 24-21 lead with 7:48 to play in the game. The Chiefs had a chance to salt away the victory, but couldn’t get a first down. A nice punt return by Washington gave the Jets possession at the Chiefs 46-yard line. In six plays, Favre had New York in the end zone, throwing a 15-yard TD pass to WR Lavernaues Coles to make the final count 28-24. GAME NOTES • TE Tony Gonzalez (853) moved into 11th on the NFL’s all-time receptions chart ahead of WR Irving Fryar (851). • CB Brandon Flowers’ 91-yard INT return TD was the fifth-longest in Chiefs history and the longest since CB Kevin Ross had a 99-yard INT return at San Diego (9/6/92). • Flowers’ 118 INT return yards were the secondhighest single-game total in team history.

THE LAST GAME Chiefs 10, Bears 3 December 4, 2011 • Soldier Field • 61,973 KANSAS CITY . . . . . . . . . . . . 0 CHICAGO. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0 It was a defensive showcase for the Chiefs as Kansas City recorded 7.0 sacks and intercepted three passes en route to a 10-3 victory. The Chiefs held the Bears to 181 yards of total offense, limiting Chicago to fewer than 100 yards both rushing and passing. Kansas City had 252 total yards of offense, 139 through the air and 113 on the ground. The difference in the game came on a 38-yard TD pass from QB Tyler Palko to RB Dexter McCluster at the end of the first half that was batted in the end zone by a Bears defender before McCluster jumped under it to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. The teams traded punts before the Bears offense started the game’s first sustained drive of the day with a QB Caleb Hanie pass to TE Kellen Davis for 12 yards. The Bears got to the four-yard line where they were stopped on third and one. On fourth and one, Hanie found a wide-open RB Marion Barber who had been left uncovered, but the touchdown was nullified by an illegal formation penalty. After a false start penalty, K Robbie Gould’s 32-yard field goal was good, putting the Bears up 3-0 with 9:44 left to play in the second quarter. LB Justin Houston recorded his first-career sack and first of 3.0 on the day as he dropped Hanie for a nine-yard loss to stall the next Bears drive. The Bears lined up for a 51-yard field goal attempt, but a delay of game penalty pushed Chicago back and forced a punt that was downed at the KC 13-yard line. Faced with third and eight, Palko found WR Steve Breaston for 10 yards and a first down. On third and nine, Palko connected with WR Dwayne Bowe for 14 yards and a first down. On fourth and three, Palko hit RB Dexter McCluster out of the backfield for five yards to keep the drive alive. With 0:02 left on the clock before halftime, Palko’s pass was batted by a Bears defender and was caught by a McCluster, putting the Chiefs up 7-3 at halftime. Kansas City forced a three and out on the Bears opening drive of the half. Following the Chicago punt, the Chiefs marched 86 yards on 15 plays and capped the drive with a 21-yard K Ryan Succop field goal. On the first play following the KC score, CB Brandon Carr intercepted a Hanie pass. The Chiefs were unable to capitalize though and had to punt. RB Kahlil Bell posted a 26-yard run to give the Bears first and goal at the seven-yard line. DE Tyson Jackson dropped Hanie for a 10-yard loss and on the next play, Houston recorded his second sack of the game, taking Hanie down for a six-yard loss. Gould’s 41-yard field goal attempt was wide left. Both teams went three and out on their next drive as S Jon McGraw dropped Hanie for a 13-yard sack to force a Bears punt. After trading punts again, the Bears got to the Kansas City 13-yard line. Hanie’s pass was tipped by a Bears receiver and multiple Chiefs defenders before McGraw grabbed the ball in the end zone for an interception. LBs Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali each recorded a sack of Hanie on the next drive, forcing the Bears into fourth and 17. Hanie’s pass fell incomplete. The Chiefs ran the clock down to 0:13 on the clock before having to punt back to the Bears. CB Javier Arenas intercepted Hanie’s final pass of the day to seal the Chiefs 10-3 victory.
