Chinatown YMCA Counselors-in-Training Program Participant Recommendation The Chinatown YMCA of Greater New York’s Counselors-in-Training (CIT) program is a progressive, experiential, education course designed to help young people develop their awareness and basic skills of youth work, enhanced with an intentional leadership development design. This workforce development curriculum is designed to develop the people and technical skills necessary to be an effective, competent and compassionate youth-worker, possessing all of the core competencies the YMCA recognizes are vital to success as a counselor in either a YMCA Day Camp or our Y After School setting. While, it is not “working” camp in the same sense as a staff member, as a NYC CIT, participants are still technically a youth participant and therefore bound by many of the same rules and restrictions as regular campers. NYC CITs are not paid and they are not guaranteed a staff position at the completion of the program. Upon completion of the program, CITs will be accredited 120 hours of community service by the Chinatown YMCA Teen Director. The YMCAs NYC CIT program teaches management and leadership skills, providing basic training in such area as child abuse prevention, time management, and curriculum development. The NYC CIT curriculum exposes participants to all of the same training as the YMCA counselors. Participants will alternate between hands-on experiences working with a specific age-group or shadowing adult counselors in classrooms for learning-based experiences. Participation in CIT programs can lead to leadership opportunities at school, the YMCA, in extracurricular activities and employment opportunities. The young person who has given you this form is applying for this Chinatown YMCA opportunity which requires commitment. Completing this recommendation necessitates you being knowledgeable about the applicant’s attributes and personality. You should be a teacher, coach, tutor, mentor, employer, or community leader who knows the young person well. Recommendations from family members or friends will not be accepted. You may return this form to the applicant sealed and stamped or send it to me at the address below. Please send me an email or call me at the phone number below with any questions. I would be more than happy to speak with you.
