Making a difference in someone’s life by volunteering your time, talent, and experience to a nonprofit organization could be the biggest gift you ever give. There are countless ways you can get involved in our community - you will find that some are on the front line, providing direct care or service; while others are helping out behind the scenes. All have the ability to make a difference and help put a smile on the face of someone in need. This handbook was designed as a part of Leadership Rockingham team project and is designed to share volunteer opportunities with you and give you the best information possible to make an informed volunteer decision. Aging, Disability, and Transit Services Mission Statement: ADTS is a private, nonprofit organization formerly known as the Council on Aging that has been operating in Rockingham County since 1973. The mission is to enhance the quality of life for all Rockingham County Citizens, with primary focus on senior adults, people with disabilities and their families. Through service and advocacy we empower them to achieve optimum health and well-being, independence and participation in the community.

American Red Cross (Rockingham County) Mission Statement: The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

Animal Protection Society of Rockingham County Mission Statement: Our mission is to improve the lives of companion animals within Rockingham County by working cooperatively with other welfare groups and shelter employees to ensure daily care, population control efforts and to promote the ability of adoptable animals to be placed in quality permanent homes

Services Provided: Program dedicated to educating dog owners on the basics of canine behavior and training. Helps people with pets in need with food, medical care, vaccinations, spaying and neutering, housing, transportation and more...

Annie Penn Hospital part of the Cone Health System Mission Statement: We serve our communities by preventing illness, restoring health and providing comfort, through exceptional people delivering exceptional care.

Services Provided: Cone Health and Annie Penn Hospital is a not-for-profit organization which was established to serve the community by providing a full range of healthcare services distinguished by measurable excellence. The founding principles of community service and superior patient care are the cornerstones of the organization.

List of Volunteer Opportunities: Annie Penn Hospital Volunteers of all ages provide invaluable support to the staff, patients and visitors of Annie Penn Hospital, serving in a variety of hospital departments. The volunteer application process is handled through the Volunteer Services Office on the second floor of the hospital. Due to the highly-regulated healthcare environment and venerability of patients, Annie Penn volunteers must meet the same requirements as hospital employees. The basic requirements include: A completed application with references; a background check; a medical appointment with the Annie Penn Employee Health nurse that includes a drug test, a blood draw to test for TB, and a review of immunizations and medical history; and a three-hour training and orientation session conducted by the Volunteer Services Director. Those volunteers interested in working at the Penn Nursing Center have the additional requirement of being fingerprinted. Applicants accepted into the program must successfully complete at least a six-month or sixty-hour commitment in order to request reference letters for job or educational opportunities. A competitive summer teen volunteer program is also offered to area residents, ages 14-17. Applications for the teen program are available on March 1st each year at hospital information desks. The Arc of Rockingham County, Inc. Mission Statement: The Arc of Rockingham County, Inc. works with and for people with cognitive, intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families

Boy Scouts of America (Old North State Council) (Cherokee District) Mission Statement: to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Services Provided: Scouting promises you the great outdoors. As a Scout, you can learn how to camp and hike without leaving a trace and how to take care of the land. You’ll study wildlife up close and learn about nature all around you. There are plenty of skills for you to master, and you can teach others what you have learned.

By making the commitment to serve as a leader, you can help make a positive difference in the kind of adults they will become and build a better future for our nation. Volunteer positions vary greatly in the amount of time necessary, ranging from several hours each week to a few hours per year. Opportunities are available year-round. Since youth member safety is our primary concern, all volunteers go through an application process that includes a criminal background check requiring a social security number. Communities in Schools of Rockingham County - Pilot Project Mission Statement: to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life

Services Provided: Mentoring, service coordination, and support for students at Holmes and Reidsville Middle Schools

Dan River Basin Association (DRBA) Mission Statement: The Dan River Basin Association preserves and promotes the natural and cultural resources of the Dan River Basin through stewardship, recreation and education

Services Provided: The Dan River Basin Association works to: preserve the river corridor with a series of municipal, county, and state parks and trails; increase public access to rivers; build constituency for the rivers and outdoor recreation through monthly outings; protect water quality by instituting stream monitoring across the Basin; promote regional nature and heritage tourism; and bridge boundaries to create a bi-state borderland community.

Eden Preservation Society Mission Statement: The Eden Preservation Society is a non-profit, privately funded organization that was formed for the primary purpose of preserving and protecting the rich heritage and history of Eden, North Carolina.

Services Provided: The Eden Preservation Society is a volunteer group focused on preserving the historic heritage of Eden, NC.

List of Volunteer Opportunities: Whether you are handy with tools or enjoy doing maintenance, can give a tour or know the computer - your skills and efforts are needed! Can you help with Museum programs for school children? Can you portray a historical personality for local events? Can you help maintain the Society's properties? Can you make phone calls? The Eden Historical Museum Mission Statement: The Eden Historical Museum is a non-profit entity that was formed to perpetuate the heritage of Eden, North Carolina. The Museum shall discover, collect, preserve any material related to Eden's history and preserve and display any such material as is reasonable given the limits of the facility. The Museum shall stimulate and encourage the interest of the general public in the history of Eden.

Services Provided: The Museum offers historical talks for community and school groups and sponsors programs for the community. It is open once a week or by appointment.

The Free Clinic of Rockingham County Mission Statement: It is the mission of The Free Clinic to recognize the right of low income, uninsured citizens of Rockingham County to have access to health care that compassionately meets their basic medical, dental, and pharmacy needs

Flurry’s Hope Mission Statement: The mission of Flurry’s Hope is to show the treasure in blind horses and their potential for riding. We offer help to others in learning how to care for and train their blind horses.

Services Provided: We are the only rescue in the country that we know of that rescues blind horses to ride them. Others may rescue them but not specifically to ride them. We believe that the world needs to see that those with disabilities have much to give. We also want to set ourselves apart from the masses of rescues to have a significant point of difference. About 93% of people cannot believe that we ride blind horses and are incredulous because the general feeling is that they are worthless and pitiful. I believe that God has a special plan for each individual (able bodied or disabled) to exercise their God-given gifts and not be destroyed for lack of knowledge.

Genealogical Society of Rockingham and Stokes Counties Mission Statement: To serve and grow the genealogical community by providing education and training, fostering increased quality and standards, and promoting access to and preservation of genealogical records.

George Rucker Sr Food Drive Ministry, Inc. Mission Statement: George Rucker Sr. Food Drive Ministry is organized and operated to provide relief to the poor, distressed and under privileged by providing food, resources, and other essential supplies, such that impoverished individuals can receive the proper care and nourishment for their health and wellbeing and to continuously extend our loving hearts to those in need by providing support, care and assistance such that they can ultimately lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.

Girl Scouts Carolinas (Peaks To Piedmont) Mission Statement: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Services Provided: The membership is divided into five age groups—Daisies (5 to 6), Brownies (6 to 8), Junior Girl Scouts (8 to 11), Cadette Girl Scouts (11 to 14), and Senior Girl Scouts (14 to 17). Girls of every race, creed, color, national origin, and economic group are eligible. In Girl Scouts, girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. Through a myriad of enriching experiences, such as extraordinary field trips, sports skill-building clinics, community service projects, cultural exchanges, and environmental stewardships, girls grow courageous and strong. Girl Scouting helps girls develop their full individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others.

Help, Incorporated: Center Against Violence Mission Statement: Help, Incorporated seeks to: Improve the quality of life for victims of sexual assault, rape, domestic violence and dating violence throughout the lifespan by providing holistic services delivered empathetically to empower victims to make decisions that will enhance safety, increase self-worth, promote positive change, and eventually lead to self-actualization; Improve the quality of life for those displaced from the workforce by providing services to enhance job readiness skills; and Enhance the community’s awareness of issues surrounding victimization, including the dispelling of myths, and promote collaborative community action efforts to stop victimization.

Services Provided: The agency serves victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and elder abuse. Advocacy is available for clients including 24hour crisis intervention and support through the criminal justice process, hospital services, and law enforcement. Residential services include Rapid Rehousing and emergency shelter. Kaleidoscope Children’s Advocacy Center provides multidisciplinary case management, family advocacy, therapy, forensic interviewing and medical evaluations for child victims of sexual abuse. Bilingual staff is available for translations as well as direct client services when needed. Professional therapy, support and treatment groups are offered by our clinical staff. Elder clients receive individualized case coordination and personal advocacy including home visits, as well as monthly Multidisciplinary Elder Abuse Team case reviews and long term care outreach and trainings -term care outreach and trainings. Finally, Help offers the evidence-based Incredible Years, a parent education program, designed to strengthen parenting skills while preventing and treating behavioral problems in pre-school and school aged children. Dinner, childcare, and homework supervision are provided, as well as transportation cost assistance and weekly participation incentives. All classes and materials are free.

List of Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers for the agency can be assigned a variety of tasks, from shelter maintenance to peer companions, depending on the individuals’ strengths, talents, and comfort levels. Other potential tasks include life skill instruction, child care, and special annual event assistance (Signature fundraiser, Client holiday store, Golf tournament, etc.) All volunteers must complete and successfully pass a background check, must complete a 4 hour training workshop, and must complete several more hours of one-on-one training, depending on the volunteer job position. Madison-Rockingham Rescue Squad Incorporated Mission Statement: The Madison-Rockingham Rescue Squad, Inc. shall be operated as a non-profit organization to provide the highest level of rescue, recovery, and pre-hospital emergency medical care possible by its individual members to any persons in need of such care. We will provide trained and properly certified responders to answer both emergency and non-emergency situations, provide public service and awareness to the community at large, and cooperate with other emergency response organizations to increase the overall effectiveness of the emergency response system, both in Rockingham County and across the State of North Carolina

Services Provided: The squad has been serving Rockingham County since 1957. Madison-Rockingham Rescue Squad has two bases, our main base is located in Downtown Madison, NC and our aquatic rescue base is located at Belews Lake. The squad provides medical first responder services for the Towns of Madison, Mayodan, and the M & M Fire District. The squad provides heavy rescue services for one third of Rockingham County and EMS back-up for the entire county. We have 20 members, 2 Certified BLS ambulances, 1 heavy rescue truck, 1 medium rescue truck, 1 QRV, 3 support trailers, and 4 boats. We are the host squad for the Rockingham County Rope Rescue Team. The squad is a part of the Rockingham County Swift Water Rescue Team and the county Trench/Structural Collapse Team. In addition, we are available 24/7 for local, regional, and statewide emergency response through Rockingham County Central Communications, Rockingham County Emergency Management, and the office of North Carolina Association of Rescue and Emergency Medical Services, Inc. Mayodan Preservation League Mission Statement: The purpose of this organization shall be to render service, support and care to and for the Town of Mayodan, to create, develop and enhance the improvement and betterment of community life for its residents and for those, wherever they might reside, whose hearts and concerns dwell within Mayodan. It shall be the constant, continuous intent and goal of the organization to seek and establish projects to enrich community life, spirit, unity and pride in and for the Town of Mayodan.

List of Volunteer Opportunities: The primary volunteer opportunity is during the Homecoming part of the Mayodan Homecoming and Antique Festival held annually the Saturday after Labor Day in September. Volunteers are needed for planning and implementing the event and for manning several different stations as needed the day of the event. Homecoming is the only fund raiser each year for the Preservation League. Proceeds are pumped back into the town through projects chosen throughout the year that the organization deems needed for the town. Volunteers are also needed to help plan and carry out these projects. Rockingham Pregnancy Care Center Mission Statement: The Rockingham Pregnancy Care Center is a registered 501C3 non-profit organization serving all of Rockingham County since 2001. We invest in the lives of women, children, and families by establishing and promoting healthy life patterns. We offer to our community the love and compassion of Jesus Christ and his plan for sexuality, marriage, and the family. We incorporate a “Learn to Earn” program that actively engages clients in making significant life changes and through this program they are provided an opportunity to acquire needed items for their children. Services Provided: Offer comprehensive health education and vital support services to low-income women and children. Rolling Ridge Riding, Inc Mission Statement: To provide FREE therapy based horseback riding and educational tutoring/instruction to physically, mentally, and emotionally challenged children in Rockingham County.

Services Provided: gives away FREE PT, OT, Speech therapy, and basic educational tutoring to children with special needs, via therapy based horseback riding. In addition to the therapy rides, Rolling Ridge also has an Equestrian Team made up of children with special needs. These riders learn to ride the horse, and go on to compete in horse shows in adaptive classes.

List of Volunteer Opportunities: Workers inside the riding ring include Horse Leaders, Sidewalkers (walk alongside the horse and rider, providing a safety net for the rider - a side walker must be able to lift a child off a horse if needed, so this job is not appropriate for people with back problems)- therapists, teachers, high school and college students, and people who are willing to encourage a child and work under the direction of the therapists/teachers to help a special child reach a goal. Other workers are needed outside the ring: people to set up for the therapy ride and then put all the materials back following the ride….secretarial/reception type help; people to assist at the equalizer and balance swing; people to assist riders in getting ready to get on the horse- helping with helmet fitting, and insuring the safety belt is on- these items also must come off the riders when they complete their ride and be returned to the proper place for ongoing use….helpers to work with the craft activities, therapy dog, reading activities outside the ring. Additionally, volunteers are welcomed to assist in cleaning out stalls, grooming the horses, cleaning tack, organizing the tack and therapy equipment areas- cleaning the therapy activity room in the barn…volunteers are needed to come to the horse shows with the equestrian team to assist with the multitude of tasks in getting the horses ready for the shows, loading the trailer, and of course, to assist with unloading when the group returns to the farm after the event. Fundraisers often require food, drinks, etc. and volunteers are always needed for baking and cooking for these events.
