VOLUNTEER IN AFRICA AND CHANGE LIVES

AFRICAN ADVENTURES THE UK’S LEADING VOLUNTEER TRAVEL ORGANISATION

Choosing to volunteer is a big decision. We guide you through the whole process, giving you whatever level of support you need. On top of that, the work you'll do has been designed to make a tangible, lasting impact on the lives of young people living in severely deprived areas.

We are proud to provide life-changing opportunities for individuals to volunteer in developing areas of Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar. We are unique in that we are project-led and project-focused.

The partnerships we have with the projects in Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar allow you to understand the realities of life in these environments; totally different to those you will be used to. This relationship ensures that the work you do as a volunteer will target real issues affecting the projects and make a genuine difference on a daily basis.

African Adventures was set up in 2009 by our UK Development Manager, Dan Mew. One simple vision has allowed us to help so many people in the areas we work and inspire volunteers across the UK; the idea that, together, we can make a difference.

If this sounds right for you, then please read on.

“It makes you feel proud, seeing the changes you can make happen right before your eyes. It makes you think that anything is possible. It changes your perspective of life, seeing how happy the children can be with so little that they have.” - Ruth Hadfield, Volunteer

GHANA ABOUT GHANA Vibrant and colourful, Ghana is steadily becoming one of the continent's economic successes and epitomises modern Africa like no other country. Its safety and security record, combined with its history and natural beauty, makes Ghana an attractive destination for an ever-increasing number of tourists. WHY VOLUNTEER? You’ll be based in a small coastal village in the Volta region. It is just one example of how recent economic success in Ghana has not filtered down into some rural areas; the majority of people here make their living through farming and fishing.

“I am the in-country Director for African Adventures here in Ghana. I’ve lived here all my life and love welcoming volunteers to our projects.”

Siva Vordzorgbe, Ghana Director

KENYA ABOUT KENYA Home to over 45 million people, Kenya is considered to be one of East Africa’s main commercial centres. Our partner projects are all based in Nakuru, Kenya’s fourth largest metropolis, where we have operated since 2009. All of them play a key role in trying to help young people by providing food as well as education. WHY VOLUNTEER? Despite having East Africa's busiest airport and world-famous national parks, Kenya is a country of real contrasts. A huge number of Kenyans live in absolute poverty, lacking the basic resources needed to sustain their lives on a daily basis.

“I oversee our work in Kenya and have been a part of African Adventures since 2009. It gives me the greatest pleasure to welcome you to the Rift Valley.”

Alex Maina, East Africa Director

ZANZIBAR ABOUT ZANZIBAR Based just off the Tanzanian coast, Zanzibar has a reputation as a beach paradise which hides the realities of life for many of its people. The Island is world famous among travellers and tourists for its beautiful beaches and historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For volunteers wishing to experience some rest and relaxation alongside their hard work, Zanzibar is definitely the place for you. WHY VOLUNTEER? In stark contrast, half of the Island’s residents live on less than 75p per day. We work with two severely overcrowded and underfunded Zanzibari schools that educate a total of 10,000 children.

“I am the In-Country Co-ordinator on Zanzibar Island for African Adventures. I cannot wait to share with you the greatest place on Earth.”

Samson Zuberi, Zanzibar Co-ordinator

HOW YOU WILL HELP VOLUNTEERS BRING OUR WORK TO LIFE

TEACHING & COMMUNITY WORK Encompasses a broad range of activities including; leading lessons, acting as a teaching assistant, marking students' work or creating new games.

Working towards our Community Development Pledge (see page 11), we ensure your time and effort will leave a tangible legacy at the project you support.

Our handy volunteer resources have a variety of lesson plans and ideas!

Sign up to volunteer with a group of like-minded individuals, by yourself or with some friends and make a difference at our partner projects. You’ll form lasting friendships and experience life in a totally different part of the world.

BUILDING WORK

VOLUNTEER ROLES

Basic construction of necessities such as classrooms, kitchens and toilet blocks; and much needed renovations like laying floors, installing running water or plastering and painting.

We offer three core roles and you can choose to focus on one or do a combination of all three. We offer the chance to work in a teaching role, a sports coaching role or a building and construction role.

MULTI-SPORTS COACHING

MY AFRICAN ADVENTURE

You need not be qualified, though experience is naturally beneficial. Coach either school classes or local teams, based on your own interests. Some schools run basic sports programmes while the proactive and enthusiastic can hold their own sessions.

Our unique Volunteer Resource Portal is located within the 'My African Adventure' section of our website. It gives you practical tips, ideas and examples that you can use whilst teaching and coaching sports.

WHY US? OUR IMPACT

100% of your donation goes straight to the projects, 100% of the time. This is because all of the charity’s overheads are funded by African Adventures, which means that the impact we are able to have in deprived communities in Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar is even more profound.

All the work we do at African Adventures is underpinned by our pioneering Community Development Pledge (CDP). Every project we partner with has been set up by, and is run by, local people. The Project Co-ordinators have identified key areas in order to move the projects forward.

OUR TEAM Our dedicated staff in Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar benefit from expert local knowledge and are experienced in running trips and supporting community projects.

We are project-led and project-focused so the In-Country Co-ordinators decide what support is required and our volunteers bring this to fruition. Every one of our volunteers contributes directly to the Pledge each time they travel with us. It enables you to see the progress that we have made, and will continue to make, at each of our partner projects.

Our In-Country Directors are Kenyan, Ghanaian and Zanzibari - they live and work in the communities where you will be volunteering. They are widely respected within their communities and have years of experience of working with volunteers.

For more information about our CDP and our commitment to the partner projects, please visit the ‘Why Us’ section of our website.

All of our UK staff have worked, lived or volunteered in Ghana, Kenya or Zanzibar so you're in good hands! Our specialist Volunteer Co-ordinators will be able to assist you through every step of the process. Their job is to make the preparation process as easy as possible for you.

OUR CHARITY The African Adventures Foundation is a registered charity in England and Wales (1153361). The Foundation provides funds for nutritious school meals, the construction of new classrooms and school facilities and, ultimately, promotes education as a way out of poverty.

We know that the thought of volunteering in Africa, although incredibly exciting, might seem daunting. We’re here to help and we guarantee to make it as easy and hassle-free as possible.
