Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Lots of Fun! Thirty-six volunteers thoroughly enjoyed the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on April 9th.

Refer a Friend! Free Orthopaedic Screening If you know a child or teen you think could benefit from the expert pediatric orthopaedic care provided at Shriners Hospitals for Children - Greenville, let their parents know about our free orthopaedic screening on Saturday, May 3!

Appreciative department heads and staff served the delicious chicken cordon bleu, mashed

potatoes, green beans, salad, strawberry layer cake and beverages. Administrator, Randy Romberger, even poured beverages. He remarked that we had 17 new volunteers in the last year, and thanked us for the many vital services we provided in 2013 (More on page 2)

The screening provides an opportunity for parents to bring their children by the hospital and meet one-on-one with one of our pediatric orthopaedic surgeons. Our clinicians will be screening for conditions such as scoliosis, clubfeet, spina bifida, leg length discrepancy, cerebral palsy, and difficulties that resulted from sports injuries. If the child needs further treatment, they may be referred to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Greenville where they will receive all care regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. Visit www.GreenvilleShrinersHospital.org for more information, and a flyer that can be printed out and distributed. We appreciate your help!

Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon... Lots of Fun! (Cont. From pg. 1) ...during our 12,142 volunteer hours! He also told us that we are now serving a lot more patients so we now need to recruit a fifth physician! That means were looking for a new chief of staff in addition to replacing Dr. Gibson, who is leaving the end of June.

Ashley Taylor, who now coordinates all volunteer activities, led us in two lively games. One game had everyone busily moving around to find the people described in one of several crazy facts previously revealed only to her. The winner was Joan Roper, who won a beautiful cake for getting the most answers on the that game. A sewing volunteer for the past 13 years, she makes sheets and blankets for our patients. The other game involved identifying pictures of each of us that were taken when we were much younger. Caroline Massey identified the most. Here she is with Goldie Harper.

VOLUNTEER VENTURES, May-June 2014

One Proud Grandma! The adorable granddaughters of retired volunteer, Phylis Edwards, came to the Hospital in March to donate Build-a-Bears, both of which quickly found new homes! Samantha (9) and Amanda (7) Edwards received several gift cards for Christmas and their birthdays. “They told me that they wanted to donate some of their gift cards to the Shriners Hospital because they knew how much it meant to me and the wonderful work that the Shriners did for children that weren't always able to do what they do.” Phylis explained. “Both of them are very active in sports, school, and church activities, so they BOTH told me, since they had been so fortunate to receive several gift cards from Build-a-Bear, they wanted to do something special for the children at SHC—Greenville.” “This entire idea of donating part of their gift cards was their idea, and they added an outfit, and a message implant to their doll, at their own expense! ... This Grandma is very very proud!”

VOLUNTEER VENTURES, May-June 2014

New Volunteers: Myra Morrison I was born and raised in Charleston, WV and spent 25 years in the Alton, Ilinois, area (Alton is directly across the Mississippi River from St. Louis). After the passing of my husband Dan (Jan. 2013), I returned to the Spartanburg area last October to be closer to my son and his family and to return to a part of the country I truly enjoy. While in Illinois, I worked twenty years for AMOCO (Standard Oil) and later BP North America. My Father and my husband were Shriners and I became a member of Daughters of the Nile twenty plus year ago in Illinois. I served as Queen of my DON Temple in 2012. I am now a dual member of Al Ansar Temple No. 117 in Geenville. I was part of the St. Louis Shriners Hospital family and knew being a part of the Greenville Hospital was high on my priority list. I am so pleased to be a full-fledged volunteer and look forward to working in the Public Relations Department with Ashley.

Pam Leopard I just recently left the Greenville Hospital System after 11 years as a second shift supervisor at the call center. I was recently diagnosed with lupus, and the stress was detrimental to my on going battle with the disease. My fiancé, Robert Miller is a Shriner. His first day coming home after volunteering made me want to know more about it. He just had this glow about him, and he was so touched. The minute you walk in the door, its such a special atmosphere. You just can't help but get hooked right away. Already, I have met some kids whose stories have changed my life forever, and I'm very excited to see what the future holds for me at Shriners.

Robert Miller Robert grew up in a Masonic/ Shriner family and was a firefighter for 13 years and a driver. He drove school buses and 18 wheelers. He loves reading and photography and used to make documentaries. He’s Pam Leopard’s fiancé. When he became an amputee, his goal was to be a Shriners Hospital volunteer when he was healed and out of the wheelchair. He’s in the surgical waiting room on Wednesdays and fills in as a courier when needed. He says, “I’m living my dream, now.”

Amos Irwin Amos is a college grad and Vietnam veteran who worked for Belk’s for 30 years in the accounting department. Then he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for another 13 years, retiring last year. He has a wonderful wife, 2 daughters, both in the medical profession, 4 grandchildren, plus 4 step children. He’s treasurer for his church and volunteers in their soup kitchen. After his church group toured SHC-G, he was deeply moved by the staff and volunteers’ wonderful teamwork and the miraculous work that we do for children. He wanted to join the team to bring ‘Love to the rescue!’ “It’s a real blessing to be able to help and to be part of the team,” he says.

William Gambrell William started out in the Navy, then worked for Goodyear for a while, then drove a big truck. He got hurt in 2008 and has been on disability since. In 2011, he joined the Masons, Shriners and Hillbillies. He’s active in his church and the Lawrens County Shrine Club, who raises money for the Hospitals. “I wanted to get more involved with the children and see the results of the money we raised,” he said. He’s a Courier on Mondays and when needed.

Volunteer Focus:

-- In Memoriam --

Donald Louis Gambrell: Don lives in the PiedmontPowdersville area of Anderson County on the family farm where he was born! He was educated at White Plains High School and Clemson Univ. He’s an avid Clemson fan! He has been married to Alice Martin for 59 years! They have one daughter, Nan Stone, who with her husband, Barry gave them 4 grandsons: Jason, Tyler, Nathan and Michael Stone. He’s a retired Textile Mfg., Superintendent, a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, charter member of Wren-Powdersville Ruritan Club, member of Mountain Springs Masonic Lodge #302 in Piedmont and member of Woodmen of the World Lodge #359 in Easley. He’s been a member of Hejaz Shriners for 46 years and has volunteered 11 years as a Hospital Courier and is also a Hejaz Shrine Road Runner. Helping the children at Shriners Hospital is the reason he joined the Shrine, so after he retired that’s what he wanted to do. Don says, “Seeing the results and improvements in the kids is what I enjoy most.”

Bob Harper, 82, of Mauldin, husband of Goldie Harper, went home to be with the Lord on March 22nd. Bob was a mason and an active member of the Hejaz Shriners, where he was a member of the Greeters Unit and served as President of the Southeastern Greeters Association. He served as a Potentate's Aide for several Potentates. Many of us know Bob was a big worker for our Shriners Hospital. He had earned his 100,000 dollar bar to his Crown of Honor for his services to the hospital and to the Hejaz Shriners. Memorials may be made to Auxiliary of the Shriners Hospital, P.O. Box 9877, Greenville, SC 29604. Here are some remembrances of Bob from a few fellow SHC-G volunteers: “I always enjoyed his company and remember him gesturing ‘I’ve been pumping that iron!’” -Paula Norton. “He liked working on airplanes and liked the Shriners.” -Richard Mazurak “We’re both from West Virginia. He was a very happy man... Always pleasant.” -Carol Bradley.

Zaxby's Fundraiser a BIG Success! A huge thank you to everyone that came out to our Fundraiser Night at Greenville Zaxby's back in March! With 10% of all proceeds coming back to the hospital, we raised $2,096!! That's over $600 more than our previous event! We are very fortunate to be partners with Zaxby's and are looking forward to the next benefit night in the Fall. Again, thank you to everyone that continues to make these events so successful!
