Superintendent’s Message

Dear Colleague: “GOOD DEEDS” Last week, I happened to see a news story about a teenager who was driving down the street with his mother when he noticed an elderly man with a walker struggling to shovel the snow out of his driveway. Without hesitating, the young man asked his mother to stop the car, at which time he jumped out and began shoveling the man’s driveway. It was cold outside, and the teen simply could have done nothing and stayed in his warm vehicle, on his way back home to his warm home. His conscience, however, dictated that he help someone in need. While I welcome and enjoy the cold weather, many of us have grown quite weary of the arctic temperatures and snow that force us to alter our daily routines. Having to plan ahead to get to work on time, piling on extra clothing, and shoveling driveways throughout the night to keep up with heavy snowfall has taken its toll on many who are waving the white flag on winter. As winter and its icy grip show no signs of letting up, patience and good spirits could easily plummet along with the temperature. Ironically, it seems that the worse the weather gets, the more people resolve to not let it get the best of them. The teenager’s story is happily not unique. I have seen and heard many stories this season of neighbors and complete strangers helping each other clear snow, rescue stranded vehicles, and check in on the elderly to ensure they are warm and safe. The teenager’s story reminds me of a wonderful quote at the end of the movie, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, where Mr. Wonka utters the phrase, “So shines a good deed in a weary world”. Indeed, the weather may be making us weary, but it cannot deter us from our need to do good deeds. Sincerely,

Donaldo R. Batiste, Ph.D. Superintendent of Schools

This would be a daunting assignment for any student, but the boys at Greenwood all suffer from learning differences that have made their personal, academic and social progress extremely challenging. Embedding camera crews at the school for three months to chronicle the boys’ struggle to learn Abraham Lincoln’s immortal words and deliver then in a final public recitation, acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns has created a fascinating and inspiring documentary that shows them heroically confronting past failures and humiliations, ultimately opening the door to what Lincoln himself called “a new birth of freedom”. Interweaving the history of this most famous of American speeches with the contemporary journey of the boys at Greenwood, “The Address” reveals the timeless resonance of Lincoln’s words, while culminating in the triumph of the human spirit.” 7 p.m. on Thursday March 12 (Movie is approximately 90 minutes in length) Vernon Hills High School Library 1445 Lakeview Parkway Vernon Hills, IL
