STATE VICE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

L

Once Again! It's Up To You To Save . . .

ow and behold 2016 is here and it is already February . . . Tax Day is right around the corner and before we know it, the heat of summer will be bearing down while we pray for rain and cooler weather. Yes, it is tax time and many of you will be making contributions into your qualified account with the hope of lowering your taxable income. As we have done in previous years, I feel it is important to share some information as per how much you may be able to contribute. Remember, this information is general and we advise you to

contact your tax professional and discuss what is in your best interest. You may or may not qualify to make deductible contributions, you might make too much money, or you might not make enough. So, call your accountant or CPA to verify what you can and cannot do . . . In finding the following limits I visited www.irs.gov to acquire the information for each Retirement Plan and/or Qualified Plan limit. Remember, you have until April 18, 2016 to contribute to your IRA and/or Roth IRA for 2015 (this is referred to as a “carry back contribution”.) The 2015

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER

IRA carry back contribution limit is $5,500 for age 49 and below while the 2015 carry back contribution limit for age 50 and above is $6,500. The good news is; Roth IRA carry back contribution limits are the same. So, for age 49 and below $5,500 is the 2015 carry back contribution while age 50 and above enjoy a $6,500 2015 carry back Roth IRA contribution limit. In 2016, the IRA and Roth IRA contribution limits will remain the same as 2015 limits. For age 49 and below the contribution limit is $5,500 for a 2016 while age 50 and above contribution limit for 2016 is $6,500. Contribution limits for a 401(k) are unchanged, the contribution limit is $18,000

if you are 49 or below. If you happen to be 50 and above, you may contribute up to $24,000 into your 401(k) for 2016 (this is known as a “catch up” (Continued on page 2)

State VP's Message . . . In summary, nothing has really changed in contribution limits between 2015 and 2016. Before contributing, make sure you have reviewed your contribution plan with your Accountant/CPA. IRA headaches are never fun and a little homework can go a very long way come tax time.

Memories Of Winter In Texas BY CY SVRCEK SOCIETY #35, ENNIS he winter time always reminds me of growing up on a farm in the Cottonwood area east of the city of West. Anytime we got a lot of snow, the school busses would not be able to run on the country roads and since many of us lived in the country, the schools would close. On days like that some of my uncles would come over and with my dad Cyril (who was a KJT State Director and KJT State Vice President for many years) would all go rabbit hunting

T

down in our pastures along the creek bottoms. I was fairly young and when they all came to hunt, I would not carry a gun, but a burlap sack to pick up the rabbits they shot.

One of my uncle’s friends had a double barreled shotgun and was not a good shot. When he did see a rabbit, he fired both barrels and usually there was nothing to pick up. They always told me to be sure to walk far behind him since they never knew where he would shoot. I quickly learned proper gun use

and gun safety. I always carried two burlap bags and when one would get too heavy, I dropped it and used the other one. When we finished hunting, we would go back and pick up the full one. When we got back to the house, they would divide up the rabbits to take home. We did not have a refrigerator at that time, so my mother would cook the rabbits for the next few days in different ways. My favorite was either fried or stewed with gravy. Regardless of the weather, there always were chores to do on the farm. Even in the snow, the animals would have to eat. We would have to shuck corn for the pigs, shell it for the chickens and feed the cattle with baled hay from the barn. On days when it was freezing cold, we would have to go to the farm pond and with an axe chop open the ice that had formed on the edge so that the cattle could drink their water. We would draw water from the well with the water bucket for our drinking and cooking, but also for the pigs and chickens. Even in the worst of the winter, we would still milk the cows both morning and evening and pick the eggs. We had wood heaters and a wood cook stove so we had to bring in enough wood for the day, for the night and the next morning. Those were the so called “good old days.” I don’t know what the kids today would do in those situations, but I know that my family would not have traded that family time in our lives for anything!

STATE SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

See What God Wants To Put Inside Your Broken Heart “Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God.” (Joel 2:13)

REVEREND ROBERT E. (BOB) KNIPPENBERG KJT State Spiritual Director

A broken heart begins the Lenten season. Maybe it’s your heart that’s torn. Every heart has its reasons for coming apart: grief over a loss; bad news from a friend; worry over someone important to you, or your own health, or world events, or local conditions; guilt over a bad decision or choice; remorse for a past that went all wrong. Or even the growing sense that we’re just

not the people we are meant to be can shatter our peace. Can any good come from a broken heart? The prophet Joel seems to think so. He urges us to come forward with our hearts

in pieces precisely because such hearts are accessible. Grace and mercy and blessings can easily infiltrate the tattered heart – much better than a hardened one that’s self-satisfied and

feels no need. Some of us spiritual overachievers intend to take a swan dive into Lent. We want our forty-day practices irrevocably set the moment the ashes mark our foreheads. We’ve resolved what we’re “doing” or “giving up” for Lent, and no take-backs. But the sign of Lent is not resolution; it’s the acceptance of death. Mortality is key here. This Lent we have only to die, admitting our weakness and inadequacy and need for rescue. During Lent this year, let your heart break. See what God wants to put inside.

Father Bob Knippenberg State Spiritual Director

The white with white anniversary cake with white chocolate raspberry filling and buttercream icing was decorated with gold ribbon and silk flowers in fall shades, and displayed the same wedding cake topper used on the original wedding 50 years ago. This topper was also used by Florence’s parents, Robert and Stella Bartosh, at their wedding reception, as well as each of

Henry’s and Florence’s children at their receptions. After the meal, music was provided for those who wished to dance, and to entertain those who didn’t.

When completing job applications or college entrance applications, there is usually a question inquiring what organizations or clubs to which you belong. This is a fantastic place to list your membership with the Catholic Union of Texas, the KJT. It’s great on resumes, too!

SOCIETY HAPPENINGS #141 GEORGETOWN By Gary Gentz

Patrick Muras (right) is shown receiving his 50-year membership pin from his proud father Dominic Muras, former KJT Sales Representative. Both are members of Dallas Society #111.

The first meeting of the year for Georgetown Society #141 was held on Friday, January 15 at St. Helen's Catholic Church Frizelle Hall. President Gary Gentz opened the meeting with a prayer and then the members recited three Hail Mary’s for Bernice Ermis who has been hospitalized and Clarence Meyer who has also been hospitalized. The prayers were followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Pat Ermis reported that the Annual Society Report for 2015 was completed. The goal for the society in 2016 is to achieve Society Recognition Level 1 status. Five additional meetings for 2016 were planned. The first service activity for 2016 will be the distribution of Lenten Soup to parishioners following noon Mass on Ash Wednesday. Dan and Virginia Berto are donating all ingredients, supplies and their time to make a Lenten soup. Soup will be cooked in the Church Kitchen and society members will assist in preparation, cooking, packaging and distribution of the soup. Small cups of soup with lids, package of crackers and a spoon will be given to all. It was decided to sell ice cream and desserts at the Knights of Columbus Lenten Fish Fry’s. The members will bring two desserts to sell along with the ice cream. Daphne Gentz will coordinate who is scheduled to bring the weekly desserts. The proceeds would go towards church and/or school projects. A meeting has been requested with Priest Father Brian McMaster to coordinate the society’s fundraising efforts with a project for the church. Dan Berto is contacting church personnel with the request. Firewood Sales Fundraising: Two wood cutting sessions are complete. This wood will be available to be sold and the proceeds used to support charity donations this year. Rick Nemec’s Tractor/Loader/Log Splitter and Trailers is making this endeavor possible.   Planning for the annual Czech Priest visit in early August

was discussed. Jeanette Nemec will coordinate the firm date for their visit. The society has helped in the hosting and food preparation for their visit in the past several years. There was discussion about doing an activity with a class from St. Helen’s School for Join Hands Day. Pat Gregoire and Virginia Berto will look into and plan this activity with school personnel. Planning for the Ice Cream

Booth participation during the Church Fall Festival was discussed. This would be a service type project as all proceeds would be retained by the church. Larry Gregoire will head up this activity. The members also discussed the Christmas Party scheduled for Friday, December 2, 2016. They agreed to have Santa Claus again. This was a big hit at the December 2015 party for the younger members.
