“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high…” George and Ira Gershwin helped immortalize DuBose Heyward’s poem by setting it to music in the ground-breaking score of Heyward’s story, Porgy and Bess. Without too much of a stretch the story, and most especially the song, can be seen as a metaphor for the artistic process. Heyward’s ode to summer is evocative not only for the picture it paints of lazy summer days but also of an uncomplicated linguistic style – the voice of “the common man”, a shared experience. The Gershwins expanded on that style by crafting music reflecting the traditions of southern hymns and spirituals. The act of putting the words to music not only took the words to a different level, it created a classic. “Summertime” is one of the most covered songs in recorded music history. More than 33,000 versions of the song exist, including versions by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra, Ricky Nelson, Janis Joplin, Annie Lennox, Celine Dion and Norah Jones. Thousands of artists took the same words and the same music and, in sometimes indefinable ways, made it their own. In doing so the song continues to be relevant to and resonate with audiences that are not defined by age, experience or background. It’s a song with staying power for multiple generations. Here at the Arts Center we see this kind of “individual take on a familiar theme” - with painters and photographers capturing Finger Lakes magic through their own special resonance and recording of a particular scene, jewelers and potters taking familiar elements and crafting items that reflect their individual visions. In our multitude of creative workshops we help everyone learn to loosen up and set imagination soaring. In that respect, it’s always summertime here. Drop by and see why!

Arts Center of Yates County programs are made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State legislature. The mission of the Arts Center of Yates County is to enrich the quality of life of Finger Lakes residents, artists, and visitors by providing opportunities for active participation in the arts. To this end, we plan, promote, and develop art programs and projects; coordinate, schedule, and publicize events; develop & maintain physical facilities.

“One of these mornings you’re gonna rise up singing And you’ll spread your wings and you’ll take to the sky…” Kris Pearson, Executive Director

Art in the Finger Lakes Opening Friday, July 22, 5-7 PM The Arts Center’s upcoming show – Art in the Finger Lakes - celebrates the work of our local artists, particularly featuring that of two international and nationally recognized talents, Helena Cooper and Pat Tribestone. Helena, immigrating from her native Brazil to settle in Ithaca has embraced the beauty of this region. As she expresses, the nature of the water and landscape speak deeply to her she explores with the eyes of an abstract painter. Pat works and maintains a gallery in Canandaigua as well as teaches, and has been honored with features in national magazines. Her mediums include pastel, in which she has won regional, national and international awards, and oil. Her distinctive still lifes are a departure from the more painterly landscapes of many works seen in the region. The exhibit’s opening reception will be held on Friday, July 22 from 5 to 7 pm. HELENA COOPER Helena grew up in her native Sao Paulo, Brazil, in a family of artists. She herself studied painting at the Escola Brasil Dois Pontos. In 1982 Helena left Brazil to settle in Ithaca, NY and has continued to refine her art. For her, the Finger Lakes Region provides an ideal venue for her artistic expression with its dramatic gorges, lakes, and rock formations. Helena sees herself as a photographer who captures designs and textures in nature. In her own words, Helena notes, “Much of the process of creating a photograph is in the way I see. My intention is to share that, my own vision of nature. When I take a picture I experience a moment of true communion with nature which, through the photograph, is transmitted to the viewer. The reflection on the water, the mystery and the sounds of water running feeds my soul and brings me peace; it allows me to access something primordial, and to achieve a sense of meaning, freedom, and belonging, of feeling home and that everything is how it is supposed to be.”

PATRICIA TRIBESTONE Patricia Tribestone is a nationally recognized pastel and oil painter. Her many distinctions include winning Best of Show at the Northeast National Pastel Exhibit in Old Forge, NY, the Dianne Bernhard Gold Medal award at the Pastel Society of America (2013), first place in the Oil Division at the Hilton Head Biennial (2013) and the Masters Circle award from the International Association of Pastel Societies of America (2013). Among her appearances in numerous journals is the feature article and cover of the January 2010 issue “Pastel Essentials”. Bold use of color and light distinguish Patricia’s work. Most often her paintings depict still lifes in a representational style. She maintains a gallery in downtown Canandaigua and in addition to her own gallery is represented by the Oxford Gallery in Rochester as well as Gallery 3040 in Old Forge, NY. However, Patricia still finds time to teach at the Art Stop in Webster and in workshops throughout New York State as well as Pennsylvania.

Penn Yan Art Guild Exhibit: Inspirations Opening Friday, September 2, 5-7 PM Not a few of the Penn Yan Art Guild members found inspiration, over the years, from a gentle quiet soul who guided painting students in his log cabin studio at Kashong. This year’s exhibit, “Inspirations”, will include some of the late Bill Wilsey’s works in tribute to his long tenure as a guild member. Come see what has inspired other artists of the Penn Yan Art Guild in their 2016 exhibit in the Arts Center’s Flick Gallery. This group of artists will be showing works in a variety of media including original plein air paintings of our local area. Everyone is invited to the opening reception on Friday evening, September 2, from 5 – 7 PM. Come meet the artists. Enjoy some wine or punch and some yummy treats while you view the latest works of Penn Yan Art Guild. The show will continue through Saturday, October 8.

The Sunny Point Committee enjoys the expanded porch for a meeting: Caryl Flickinger, Faith Benedict, Sandy Murrin, Sandy Young, and Di Johnson. An enlarged porch and interior which has been opened up will provide better classroom space. The boathouse has become a pottery studio.

Triathlon Sponsorship, Volunteers Garner $1200 for ACYC MANY THANKS to all the volunteers who turned out to help with the Keuka Triathlon on June 5th. Despite threatening skies, the predicted thunderstorms passed us by and rain held off until after the racers were finished. More than 300 athletes from 14 states, including Maine, Connecticut, Kansas, Maryland and Virginia, participated in the event, which included an intermediate level triathlon, a “short tri”, an “aqua bike” event and a run-bike-run option for athletes unwilling to brave the lake so early in the season. While Keuka was a relatively balmy 69.5 degrees the morning of the race, a stiff breeze heralding an incoming front did kick up waves that caused some racers problems. Our congratulations to local participants Len Wiltberger, who finished the Intermediate Tri in 3:06:42 for 61st place; Jonathan Mackercher who came in 35th in the Short Tri with a time of 1:27:50; native son Joshua Gillespie who finished 90th in the Short Tri with a time of 1:41:58 and para-triathlete Bert Dailey who came in 143rd in the Short Tri with a time of 2:23:30. This event would not be possible without the help of all our great volunteers and the participating athletes were particularly appreciative of everyone’s support before, during and after the race. Thanks to your help, the Arts Center was able to raise more than $1,200 from this event!

Volunteer Spotlight: Patti Bandy Patti Bandy has been working with the Arts Center for the last year. She has been instrumental in making enhancements to the website, updating the exhibiting artists’ information and also greeting patrons twice a month. Patti, originally from Arlington, Virginia, moved to Penn Yan with her partner, Jack Young, nearly 7 years ago. She attended school in Virginia, and later worked in the legal profession in Washington, D.C. for ten years. She has since lived in Nanuet, New York, and Houston, Texas, before coming back to reside in New York State. Patti’s interests include volunteering at the Wine Country Classic Boat Club (WCCB), and the Finger Lakes Chamber of Music. Patti also enjoys painting, interior design, and knitting. She has taught several knitting classes since her retirement, nearly two years ago, from the paralegal profession. In Patti’s spare time, she and Jack enjoy their Chris Craft wooden boat and their Welcraft, docked at Morgan’s Marine. Together, Patti and Jack have two Schnauzers, Maggie and Gretchen. Patti’s two daughters and grandson live in Texas.

Seventeenth Art Barn Show and Sale July 2 & 3 Every year Hannelore Wolcott-Bailey says this is going to be the last year for a tradition: The Art Barn, held over the July 4th holiday at her barn, Blue Spruce Lane, 2 1/2 miles south of Penn Yann off Route 54. Maybe this year is IT! A series of painting companions have filled the barn with paintings, prints, note cards, conversation and laughter over almost 2 decades. Sharing art keeps them young: Hannelore is now entering her 10th decade, and certainly doesn’t act it. Come out between 9 and 4 on July 2nd or 3rd; it may be the last!

“Palm of the Hand” Writers Mondays July 11 & Aug. 1, 4:00-5:30 PM The first Monday of every month, 4-5:30 PM, “Palm-of-the-Hand” memoir writers meet in the Board Room of the Arts Center. The concept of “Palm of the Hand” is to write about a single anecdote of your life expressed in no more than one page. If you’ve wanted to put down memoirs of your life, but didn’t know how to begin, this is a great format to start. We each read and offer feedback if requested. All welcome. (And we each kick in $1 to ACYC.)

Paintings and Photographs Celebrated in Arts Center Juried Show A painter from Macedon and a photographer from Corning snagged top honors at this year’s second annual Painting & Photography Juried Show at the Arts Center of Yates County. Over $2200 cash and prizes was awarded. Judge Lyn Asselta, a pastel artist from Florida, tapped Pat Tribastone’s witty painting “Whose Egg is it Anyway?” for the Florence Middlebrook Award for Painting Excellence and RIT photography professor Willie Osterman chose Chris Walter’s black and white “Lincoln” photograph for the Stephen and Elise Rosenfeld Excellence in Photography Award at the June 10th exhibit opening. More than 150 art lovers turned out to view the 60 works chosen from 140 submissions to the juried show, to celebrate with the artists and to enjoy wine from Billsboro Winery and Miles Wine Cellars. Thanks to the support of sponsors including Ampersand Art, Blick Art Materials, Cheap Joes Art Stuff, Golden Artists Colors, Guerrilla Painter, Longs Cards and Books, Lyons National Bank, Museum Photographics, Pixel Preserve and Stork Insurance.

Naples artist Robin McCondichie’s “Frozen Shadows” pastel received a painting award sponsored by Lyons National Bank. Works by Virginia Braun of Webster, Lana Grauer of Mamaroneck, Steve Bondurant of Macedon and Linda Ludwig of East Aurora were also chosen for special recognition, with paintings by Krista Schiesser of Rochester and Roberta Nelson of Seneca Falls receiving honorable mention. RIT photography professor emeritus Howard LeVant’s photograph of the Cliffs of Mohr also received an award, and Ostermann, who is associated with RIT, assured the audience his judging had been accomplished without knowledge of the artists’ names, which were affixed later. Osterman noted that a photographer had to “see, resonate and record” the images they chose. Both Osterman and Asselta said they were impressed with the quality of the work presented for the show. Everyone is invited to view the show and vote for his favorite work. The piece with the most votes at the end of the show will win a “popular choice” award. The juried show runs through July 17.

AIR...What is it? Artist in Residence at Sunny Point The Arts Center of Yates County is pleased to welcome mixed media artists June Edwards of Pittsburgh and Georgia Rowswell of Cheyenne, Wyoming as Sunny Point artists in residence this year. The artists in residence program invites professional artists from around the country to apply for a ten day stay at the Arts Center’s lakeside facility, Sunny Point. During each of the two sessions (one in early July, one in early September) artists are given the freedom to concentrate on their work in this inspiring environment. A volunteer committee considers the applications and chooses the artists they feel will benefit the most from the experience. This year the committee considered applications from painters, potters and writers from across the state and region. June Edwards spent four years in this region as an art teacher at Penn Yan Academy before moving to New York City and, more recently, to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her latest series of work combines manipulated digital images that have been mounted, cut apart, reassembled and then reworked with a variety of painting and drawing media to achieve unique dimensions. She’s looking forward to using the beauty of Keuka Lake and the surrounding area as a basis for a new series of work. Edwards will be working at Sunny Point from July 1st – July 11th. Pictured: “Furnace” and “Bridge Remnant”.

Georgia Rowswell works primarily in fibers and is in the midst of collecting fabric and other fibers to include in a year-long “life ring” project. Based on the concentric circles of the growth of trees, Rowswell says “Life Rings are about spinning stories and art from fabric.” An avid blogger and journalkeeper, Rowswell also plans to sketch and collect stories of the area during her September 2 – September 12 residency.

Please help us in making these artists welcome and sharing the wonders of the area with them.
