Volakas Marble - Description 



VOLAKAS WHITE is a dolomitic marble quarried from “Falakro” mountain near by the homonymous village “Volakas”, after which it has been named. Volakas marble quarries are very productive and all located in the area of Drama (Province of Makedonia) in Greece. This famous marble is well known all over the world and is used in various forms, like standard sized tiles, cut-to-size dimensions, slabs and as raw blocks by construction companies.

Volakas Marble – History Volakas marble became famous almost since its first quarry days. For many decades it has been exported worldwide and still continues to play a leading role on the international stone market.  Volakas area is together with Kavala and Thassos the most productive areas for white marble excavation in Greece. The highly developed marble industries here are quarrying, manufacturing and exporting almost 50% of the white marble. 

The company’s owns in total 4 quarries (3 located one beside the other and 1 separate) all located at the very heart of Volakas marble extraction area and operating since 1985. The total area of all quarries together is around 144.000 m2   It is estimated that the reserves of the Volakas quarries, are enough for marble extraction during the next 50 years. The extraction capacity of all 4 quarries combined is annually averagely 23.000 m3

 

The Volakas quarries are located near by the town Drama, where F.H.L. facilities can be found. An easy approach is guaranteed due to the good national road network till Drama and all asphalt streets till the quarry itself. The quarries are operating according the environmental regulations, means that the mountainside is restored after excavation is completed, e.g. by planting trees. The quarries are operated by a specialized work force of 35-40 people, almost all around the year. All employees are equipped and work according to the safety management regulations.
