YOF Commemorates Israel's Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terror on Yom HaZikaron

V'shinantam L'Vanecha **********

On Monday, Yom HaZikaron, we paid somber tribute to the chayalim (soldiers) who bravely serve Medinat Yisrael and to victims of terror, with special memorials for those who have sacrificed their lives. In Lower Division Rabbi Shilo Sharoni presented a radio broadcast over the loudspeaker where he talked about the chayalim and then recited the memorial prayer Kel Maleh Rachamim. Third grader Moshe Madeb sang "Ani Maamim". JBHS students and faculty attended an assembly that included video and music tributes. Tehillim and Kel Maleh Rachamim were recited by Michael Franco and Rabbi Hanoch Gez. The annual tradition of an honor guard in the High School lobby is a stirring reminder of the sacrifices of the IDF. Dr. Lea Gerber is the coordinator of the Yom Hazikaron program. Middle Division had the privilege of hearing from Shay Amir who spoke about friends with whom he served in the IDF who lost their lives in battle. His personal account was particularly meaningful to our students.

Yom Ha'atzmaut Celebrations in the Elementary School!

On Tuesday, Yom Ha'atzmaut, the Yeshivah of Flatbush Elementary School was a sea of blue and white as we celebrated Israel's 65th birthday. Our Benot Sheirut Leumi Shira Madar and Or Shitrit beautifully decorated the school to give the building a festive feel and each division had a unique program in celebration. Lower Division students viewed a play with slideshow presentations, singing and dancing performed by students in class 3-206. The performance was produced by Lower Division Teachers Ayala Urim, Miriam Guetta, assistants Danielle Zano and Orly Avidan and computer teacher Adina Zidele. In Middle Division the 4th floor was transformed to depict Jewish Life Around the World. Each classroom focused on a different country and all of Middle Division took turns visiting each exhibit, sampling typical foods, seeing their classmates and faculty in the countries' traditional dress and learning about history and culture. The Israel room screened a Nefesh B'Nefesh film that expressed the elation that new olim feel as they arrive in Israel.

Early Childhood had a birthday party for Israel where they sang, danced, waved flags and placed 65 "candles" on a big birthday cake mural. Rikudim (dancing) for all divisions was a highlight of the day.

Yom Ha'atzmaut Celebrations at JBHS!

~Senior Norman Greenberg On Monday night, April 15, the new Khezrie High School Auditorium was filled with members of the community who came to celebrate Israel's 65th birthday. The evening began with a special maariv: Tefillah Arbit Hagigit and included a "Letter to Israel" address by Mrs. Miriam Wielgus, JBHS Jewish History Department chairperson, an Israel video, and beautiful singing by the choir and the chamber choir led by Mr. Brian Gelfand. The program closed with a Senior Choir Hebrew rendition of "One Day More" from Les Miserables and "Hatikva". On Tuesday morning, the high school enjoyed the program as part of the Yom Ha'atzmaut celebration that culminated in faculty and students singing and dancing in honor of Medinat Yisrael. Thank you to Mrs. Sally Shatzkes and Mrs. Rachel Winkler and everyone involved for their wonderful work.
