-Geri Ferneau

After two years our interim pastor will be departing MdS as we prepare for our new pastor. We will be observing these events by hosting a “Farewell Potluck” on Sunday, July 14 for Dr. Larry Corbett following his final sermon from our pulpit. Please plan on coming to say a final farewell to Dr. Corbett and partaking of a feast as we thank him for his service. As is customary, everyone attending is asked to bring an entrée or side dish to share with fellow congregants; beverages and cake will be provided. We will be opening a new chapter in the history of Mission del Sol as our new pastor comes to the pulpit on Sunday, August 4. Following worship that morning, we will welcome our new pastor, Rev. Stan Martin and his wife Janet, as we host a southwest themed brunch in their honor. The main course will be provided; we are asking all attending to bring a dessert to share. In addition, if anyone has any southwestern artifacts, i.e., sombreros, piñatas, etc. they would be willing to loan for this occasion, they are asked to contact Cynthia Giroux at 480-730-6499 or Elizabeth Graham at 480-726-6491. Lastly, please remember—as our new pastor will have many new names with which to get acquainted, it would be most courteous if we wear our name tags that day. This summer will mark changing events in the history of MdS. Please come and join in this very exciting time for our church.

Our Mission: Mission del Sol Presbyterian Church (USA) is a faith community that receives, proclaims and extends God’s love through word and deed, builds disciples through creative worship and exploration of Biblical truth and fosters justice in all God’s creation.

Dear Friends, A camp fire is a magnetic gathering place whether one is seated on a log, a blanket or a light-weight folding chair. We can picture in our mind the process of building the fire: clearing the area; gathering kindling; small sticks, larger ones, and even a log or two. Then starting the fire, carefully, blowing gently on the flame trying to get it to catch the kindling. Then watching it flame up; and now, keeping it going. Adding wood at the appropriate time, but not too much wood, and stirring it around to allow it to burn down in time for roasting marshmallows or popping popcorn; then rekindling it for the late night coffee drinkers and storytellers. The image of a campfire reminds me of Paul’s letter to Timothy when he says, “I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you … for God did not give us a spirit of timidity but rather a spirit of power and of love and of selfdiscipline.” It has been observed that Christianity is one generation away from extinction. The fire can burn out. The burden is on each generation to rekindle the faith within us and give it to the next. More than faith is passed on. Our identity as Christian is given to the children coming along in the next generation. For the past two years you and I have shared a common faith in Jesus Christ. You invited me into your church family as your interim minister, and in this timeframe my faith has been rekindled and inspired by your devotion to serving in mission in the Spirit of Christ. I’ve appreciated your energy and commitment to worship, education, music, and service in the church. Your personal stories of life in Mission del Sol have brought smiles and nods of “I think I understand,” from me. Now, it’s time for you all to welcome the Rev. Stan Martin on August 1 with the same spirit of power and love in Christ. I encourage you to reflect on how we share our faith and identity with one another and the next generation. As you welcome the Rev. Mr. Martin may the peace of Christ be with you in your journey of faith into the future. And, may the gift of God that is within you be rekindled. Sincerely, Larry Corbett

Session News The Session met on Tuesday, June 4, 2013. Last month I reported that one of the true joys of serving on the Session is the opportunity to meet with a confirmation class. Another joy is to examine Elders and Deacons elect for service as church officers, as required by the Book of Order. At Mission del Sol, that examination consists of asking each Elder and Deacon elect to share their personal faith journey. The stories we heard were as varied as our congregation and were powerful expositions of the work of God in the lives of those elected to serve. Following these statements of faith, Session voted unanimously to sustain the elections of Deacons and Elders and to approve them for ordination and/or installation on Sunday, June 23. The Worship Commission moved a Sunday morning schedule of two services of worship and church school, effective Sunday, September 8, 2013. There was considerable debate on the motion. When debate ended and a vote was taken, the motion was narrowly defeated. Thus the schedule of worship and church school for the fall remains an open issue and the congregation is urged to express their wishes/desires to any member of Session over the summer. Session will again take up the fall schedule at its next meeting in August. A reality of life in Arizona is that air conditioners sometimes reach end of life; such was the case for the air conditioner that cooled the office area. Session approved expenditure to replace that unit, with funds from a special account for that purpose. On a personal note, my term on the Session is now ended and this will be my last Soundings article as Clerk. Two years ago, I wrote that I shall attempt to briefly provide key activities and decisions made by the Session. I hope that you have found these articles useful. I also hope that the next Clerk of Session will continue the tradition of these articles, as I believe they are an important means to communicate with the congregation and to show transparency in the leadership process.

July 2013 In thinking about this last article, I have searched for words to say something profound about the life in Christ with the community of faith that is Mission del Sol Presbyterian Church. It seems to me that the most significant way for me to conclude is this: thank you for the opportunity to serve the church that I love. - George Prohaska, Clerk

Music Notes It’s been just over two months since I first began my second journey with Mission del Sol. After having been away for over twelve years, it’s exciting to be back! The summer provides an opportunity to reflect on the year completed and the year ahead. The last two months for the music ministry at Mission del Sol have been particularly exciting, but I keep telling people that the best is still yet to come. I’d like to share several ideas about the future of the Mission del Sol music program with you. Advent Choir First, I invite you to consider joining Mission Bells and/or Mission Chorale for the fall season. As I look through the music folders in the choir rehearsal room, I recognize a lot of names of people who aren’t with us on Wednesday evenings; we would love to have you join us again. As an alternative to a weekly commitment, let me offer an opportunity to you for this Advent season. Beginning in November, the choir will begin rehearsing a small-scale cantata made up of many familiar songs. The time commitment will be minimal—an hour a week—and this will provide those of us who would like an opportunity to sing with the choir the chance to do so on a temporary basis. Who knows, maybe you will consider singing throughout the spring as well! Sunday Soloists and Musicians By now you have probably noticed that we have had several guests in worship. Lies’l Hill joined us in April and June; Paula Provo joined us in May; Julie Trent played trumpet in June and several singers from within the congregation will sing solos throughout July. In August we will have a flutist join us, and in September we will most likely have an oboist. Let me emphasize something here: I would love to have members of Mission del Sol provide music as soloists in worship – there are plenty of opportunities to do so. There are also opportunities for duets and small groups. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me about your

July 2013 desire and willingness to support the music ministry. Several people have already done so and we will see their talents very soon! Scotland Tour Perhaps my most grandiose plan is to take the Mission Chorale on a tour of Scotland in conjunction with a study of our church’s history. (I know there are people within our congregation who know a lot about this subject). As we come out of a period of considerable change within our church community, I believe we are going to be encountering exciting opportunities to serve in bigger and bolder ways. Let’s talk about big ideas together and throughout the coming months. I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of energy coming our way this year. It’s an exciting time to be at Mission del Sol. It’s been a great two months for me and I look forward to many more. -Patrick Fanning

From the Deacons Our Family Promise guests arrived on June 9 and departed on June 16. We hosted four families (ten people) and it was a very uneventful event (That’s a good thing)! Thanks to our amazing MdS volunteers that support this special local mission project. The hours/people logged in this time were over 167 hours and 50 volunteers. We are entering our 13th year of supporting this program and it gets better every time we do it! When the beds arrived they were blown up and made by the set-up hosts: Velma Lawrence, Pam Bosch, Paul Bosch, Bill Brazelton, and Meghan Whittard. Our cooks and kitchen helpers this time were: the Sr. High CIA group, Todd Whittard, Wendy Whittard, Debbie Taylor, Cindy Shelton, Paula Armenta, Pam Dobson, Sharon DePietro, Colleen Pope, Maya Duncan-Pope, Amin Duncan-Pope, Alia Duncan-Pope, Elena Duncan-Pope, Pam Bosch, Liz Johns, Lois Fitzsimmons, Karen McComish, Megan Whittard, Donna Brazelton, Linda Boyne, Janet Thor, Jane Aitken, Sue Herrmann, Mim Warner, Karen Bruggeman, Wendy Whittard and Sarah Kinsey. Our bakers and dessert makers are always bringing in wonderful treats and cookies. Thanks to: Marilyn Brickley, Rose Coon, Debbie Taylor, Jeanne Crawford, Colleen Pope, Melanie Zimmer, Elizabeth Graham, Linda Boyne, Janet Thor, Shirley Langer, Velma Lawrence, Karen McDaniel, Meghan Whittard and Lindsey Bruggeman. Evening activities were provided by: Sharon McPherson (massages), Sue Herrman (wool and spinning demo), Phillip Horen (pet care demo) and a water balloon fight provided by the TNT group. We couldn’t do this program without the overnight chaperones. They are the ones who sleep in Room 104 and are on site with the families during the night. They wake everyone up at 5:00 a.m. and make sure

July 2013 nobody misses the bus! Thanks to: Todd Whittard, Larry Langer, Paul Bosch, Ted Taylor, Bill Brazelton, Owen Clymer and Phillip Horen. To everyone who took laundry home—we really appreciate it! Please return the clean linens to the bench outside Karen’s office. On behalf of the Family Promise Deacons, Sharon DePietro and Janie Parks we want to give a heartfelt THANK YOU to our awesome MdS volunteers. Our next week to host is the week beginning Sunday, September 8.

Mission del Sol has a tradition of reaching out to others to serve, and yearly mission trips are an opportunity for our members to help others. This year we will be traveling to New Jersey September 29October 5 to help in the rebuilding efforts following last year’s devastation from Hurricane Sandy. Our work is rebuilding homes, so all skills are needed—carpentry, painting, cleaning, etc. Older youth and adults are welcome. If you have never been on such a trip, we hope you will consider it. Information regarding travel arrangements and costs will be available soon. Anyone interested is asked to contact Jan Spence at [email protected], 480-266-04362, or Ed Spence at [email protected], 480266-8791.

Triennium

Fall Teachers

Megan, Sophia and Russell are heading to Triennium this month. Please remember them as they travel to Purdue University July 15-20. They will be participating in a national Presbyterian leadership conference and in turn, will bring their experience back to the congregation.

Summer Sundays Our Summer Sunday program for ages 3 through 5th grade will be July 14 this month—during worship (9:00—10:15 a.m.) We will continue with our Kindness theme with crafts, games and a lesson while showing our kids the fun they can have in Sunday School.

We are looking for teachers for our Elementary and Youth Sunday School programs starting this fall. If you have ever been thinking about helping out, this is your opportunity! We need both teachers as well as those who are willing to be an extra set of eyes and hands in the classrooms. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to engage with the children at MdS. Training, curriculum and support will be provided. All you need is a love for our youth and a desire to see them grow and transform. Ideally, we would like to have enough teachers to rotate duties. If you are able to help even one Sunday a month, it would go a long way in the lives of our youth. Please contact Kellie for more information ([email protected]).

Cherub Club Cherub Club will continue to meet during Summer Worship times for children 3 through 7 years of age.

Children’s Serving Opportunity Parents and children, ages 5 and older— please join us at Feed My Starving Children on Saturday, July 13 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. This is a practical way for kids and parents to get involved in the community by packing meals for hungry children. There are a limited number of spots available for this event, so please contact Kellie at [email protected] to sign up.

Volunteers making this experience possible include: Karen Bruggeman, Janie Parks, Chris Fiscus, Pam Bosch, Paul Bosch and Jay von Borstel. A special thanks to all our kids who worked extremely hard. We are already looking forward to next year!

Facilities Commission As usual, the Facilities Commission has been busy with several on-going projects. We would like to thank everyone who donated to the Facilities Wish List. Your generosity has enabled us to purchase a carpet shampooer and work on renovations to Mission Hall. Carpets in the Sanctuary, Meet and Greet Room, Choir Room, Nursery, and several classrooms have been cleaned. Also, all Mission Hall chairs have been cleaned (isn’t it nice to have a clean chair to sit on)! The renovations in Mission Hall are continuing. The walls have all been painted—thank you to all volunteers who showed up with their paintbrushes! Also, the door frames, window frames and air vents have all been painted. The large cross that had been suspended from the ceiling was taken down and cleaned. It was reinstalled as a focal point on the stone wall. The committee is now working on plans to upgrade the lighting and flooring. In addition to upgrades, Facilities has been engaged in routine maintenance issues—replacement of the office air conditioning unit, rekeying of the Mission Hall and Education Buildings, and tree trimming and replacement.
