Vol 22 No 19 27 November 2015

NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Friends We’ve come to the end of another school year. It has passed incredibly fast and now, with Christmas only one month away, the signs of the festive season are appearing everywhere. In the last fortnight we have had a number of ceremonies of various types. Each one acknowledging and celebrating the wonderful work done by students and staff during the year. On Saturday 14th November the Year 12 Formal was held at the Convention Centre. It was a fitting finale to thirteen years of schooling. The kids not only looked sensational, they were sensational as they presented each other with tributes and shared with us some snippets of their journeys at Peace. This was followed by the various Presentation Ceremonies where students were recognised for their efforts and hard work in all the different aspects of school life. Finally, last Friday we farewelled our Year 12 students with a very special, yet emotional Graduation Chapel. The tributes written by the teachers to each student were entertaining and spot on. I wish to extend a huge thank you to Mrs Brayshaw, Mrs Rashleigh and all the teachers involved in making it a very special day that I know the students will treasure for a long time. As the school year draws to an end, the Christmas season, with all its related events and business is just beginning. What does Christmas mean to you? Unfortunately, in our modern society, Christmas, for many, is associated with extra demands and added stress. What gifts to buy and what food to cook? Decorating our houses and sending Christmas cards, ensuring we live up to all that is expected of us. No wonder Christmas time can be stressful? I pray that amidst the business this Christmas, you will find opportunities to pause and reflect on the things that are ultimately important to you. Christmas reminds us that the Prince of Peace came to spread peace and joy. May the coming break be all that you wish it to be. May it be a time for family and friends; for remembering the important things in life; for slowing down and taking stock; and most of all, for experiencing the reality of God with us, in us, and amongst us. Christmas blessings to each one of you. May you enjoy a peaceful, rejuvenating and joyful Christmas season. Elisabeth Fenske

As the school year comes to a close and we all go off to enjoy the Summer Holiday, the following may help when you hear the dreaded words “I’m bored” as your child… ‘Have you’… Been creative? Outside play? Read a book? Exercised for 20 minutes? Done something helpful?

Just a reminder to our 2015 Year 4 parents about our information evening on the Agile Learning Environment for Year 5 students to be held on Monday 30th November in the Year 5 classrooms.

We look forward to seeing you at our Carols by Candlelight this Friday night. Food available from 5 pm. Concert starts at 6.00 pm

It has been a wonderful experience as Acting Head of Junior School and having the opportunity to get to know and meet many more families within the Junior School community. Thank you to the teachers and aides for their fantastic support. I am looking forward to returning to the classroom and our Year 5 cohort for 2016 and the beginning of Agile Learning Environment. May Peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through! Kind Regards

Middle School News A Christmas Reminder Everywhere we go we are surrounded by the sights and sounds of Christmas but often we forget that many of these have Christian significance. The Christmas Tree – All Christmas trees are evergreen, with their leaves pointing up towards heaven. They symbolise our everlasting life with Jesus. Christmas Lights – These colourful decorations light up the night sky, just like the Christmas star did on the night Jesus was born. They also remind us that we as Christians need to be Jesus’ light in the world. The Candy Cane – Candy Canes are shaped like a Shepherd’s crook and if turned upside down, the letter

J. One of Jesus’ names is Shepherd. The colours red and white interwoven also represent the blood that Jesus shed for us and his purity. Presents – The gift of giving is an extremely important life skill and one that is founded in the greatest gift of all that has been given freely to us – Jesus. As you venture around the shops and community this Christmas may you be reminded of the true reason for the season – Christ’s birth. Students End of Year Reports These reports will shortly be finalised and sent to you via post at the beginning of the school holidays. Middle School Activities Monday to Wednesday next week we have fun filled adventures for the Middle School Students. All activity sessions have been finalised. All students need to go to their Home Group in the mornings so the normal class roll can be finalised. Dress Code – All students are to wear their PLC Sports Uniform during these activity days. Students going to Jump Mania need to bring their jump socks with them if they already have these. Students doing sport Tuesday afternoon will need their swimming clothes as they will be using the boarding pool. Lunches – Students need to provide their own food on each day, as per normal school days. The tuckshop is also available. Green Island – students going to Green Island for the day need to be at the Wharf Street Terminal by 7.45 am on Tuesday. Dress code is free dress. Students need to bring their swimming clothes, towel, food and drinks. Students are provided with a stinger suit and snorkelling equipment on the island. Students are able to purchase their food over there during the day, at their own cost. Glacier Rock Hike – students will need to ensure they have sufficient food and water with them for the day. The teaching staff are looking forward to celebrating a great year with students during these activities. Thanks It has been a privilege to have worked in this role in Middle School during the last semester. I have been impressed with the staff and students in Middle School. Thank you to the staff, students and parents who have supported me during this period. I look forward to continuing to develop the relationship between Junior and Middle school when I step back into my role as Head of Junior School next year. Merry Christmas! May you have a happy and safe break and enjoy family time. Sarah Rowan, Acting Head of Middle School.

Senior School News News from Mr Cheyne As 2015 draws to a close, I think back to the many events that occurred in a very full year. There have been a number successes in many areas. This culminated with the annual Presentation Evening, which was well attended by students and their parents. It was a fitting platform to applaud the academic achievements of our students and after all, it is the education of students that is our core business. Congratulations to the many Academic Award recipients, especially those presented with Academic Excellence awards. Looking forward, I also am excited to work with the inducted College Captains for 2016; Olivia Smith and Jacob Mahler, who will be supported by Megan Parker and Timothy le Poidevin. As my time comes to an end as Acting Head of Senior School, I would like to thank the senior students for their co-operation and efforts during Term 4. I have enjoyed my time in this role but also welcome the return of Mr Peter Cummings from long service leave in the new year. I would also like to acknowledge Mrs Sarah Rowan, who transitioned from Junior School to Middle School and capably filled the role. I do, however, look forward to returning to Middle School in 2016 and investing in the planned initiatives for the learning outcomes of our students. God bless, Mr Nick Cheyne
