Carrie Pumphrey, D.D.S., Board Chair Major Hospital Foundation

Dear Supporters: Serving as President of the Major Hospital Foundation Board of Directors has been my privilege and an honor. I am so proud of our volunteer Development Council! They have built a base of support for the Major Hospital Foundation, and during 2015 that support has grown exponentially. Overall, due to their efforts, the Foundation will be able to contribute over $4.5 million to the construction of the new MHP Medical Center, the replacement facility for Major Hospital. What an accomplishment! 2015 was a year of fundraising and building, as you can see from this report. The board, development council, and staff of the Foundation have all worked very hard to increase fundraising results and to bring the Major Hospital Foundation to the forefront in people’s minds as a worthy charitable investment. Their hard work is paying off, and I extend my sincere gratitude to them and our donors and encourage everyone to continue their support.

The mission of this committee is to highlight Major Health Partners and the services offered to the community. This 40 member group of women ambassadors meets five to six times a year to learn the inside scoop on MHP.

The Community Relations Committee kicked off 2015 with a two-session movie event open to all. Attendees could choose whether to attend in the afternoon or evening depending on their schedules. In addition, they were treated to a free showing of McFarland USA and a complimentary meal and drinks. Before each movie showed, Dr. Robert Shellman spoke about the importance of sleep and the risk factors of sleep disorders.

Pink Out Party   The Major Hospital Foundation partnered with the Benesse Oncology Center and Indiana Grand Racing and Casino for the second annual Pink Out Party. The night centered around cancer education and pampering for 175 women!

The event, which took place at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino, included a cancer education room where women could learn about the important screenings available for breast, lung, cervical, skin and oral cancers. In addition, each woman could take advantage of a pampering room that included chair massages, product vendors, wine, appetizers and more!

The ladies in attendance were treated to a delicious sit-down dinner, presentations by Dr. Tobi Hough and Dr. Anthony Bashall, and the chance to win one of three designer handbags.

This event raised money for the You Are Not Alone Fund at the Major Hospital Foundation. This fund helps cancer patients at Benesse with needs that are not covered by insurance including food, daily living expenses, medicines, etc.

MHP Giving Tree: This recognition group includes any MHP employee who contributes to the Major Hospital Foundation.

Each year, the MHP Giving Tree plans a two week giving drive during November. This is a great way for current members to renew their pledges and for new members to join. In 2015, the campaign theme was “Stay Connected to Our Future”. The Employee Giving Committee wanted to emphasize the importance of the New MHP Medical Center and the important role that the Foundation has in its completion. In 2015, the MHP Giving Tree gained 34 new members and raised $100,460.

Legacies of Caring The terms of the Raymond E. Compton Fund state that income “shall be applied to the expenses of that part of said hospital as shall be incurred by any and all charity patients of said hospital and for no other purpose.” People often put off vital health care because they believe that they simply cannot afford it. In the worst cases, people who need continuous health monitoring for chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension ignore their health in favor of other expenses, which can lead to expensive and preventable hospitalizations. Raymond Compton was aware of this problem even thirty years ago and created this legacy in an effort to prevent it. During 2015, the fund granted $25,000. The terms of the Marian McFadden Fund state that the income from the fund “shall be used for specific projects or improvements so designated by the Foundation.” The Foundation generally allocates income from the fund for capital purchases, including medical equipment and technology. As a former Hospital Foundation board member, Marian McFadden understood that in order to provide superior health care solutions and optimal clinical outcomes, the hospital must have a stream of income to purchase the best equipment available. Since Miss McFadden’s momentous gift in 1975, many pieces of vital equipment have been purchased with the fund income. We think she would be proud of her role in Major Hospital’s reputation for cutting-edge technology and equipment in central Indiana. No grants were made from the McFadden Fund in 2015.

Experience the Major Difference What is the Major Angel Program? Every week, thousands of patients interact with Major Health Partners. In a career where it can be difficult to balance between moving quickly and efficiently and making sure that you are fully taking care of all your responsibilities with a smile on your face, some individuals stand out as Major Angels. Through the Major Angel Program, the Major Hospital Foundation offers patients the chance to give back in honor of Major Health Partners’ employees who went above and beyond. Our best individuals show patients how important good health care is and encourage further donations. Being recognized as a Major Angel allows employees and volunteers who excel to be honored organization-wide. Participation by patients in this program shows staff their work does not go unnoticed and that their extra effort is appreciated. How Does It Work? Around 21 days after discharge, the Major Hospital Foundation sends personalized letters to patients. In this letter, patients are thanked for choosing MHP and are given a brochure explaining the Major Angel Program with the choice to donate money and add a message to the special staff or volunteer. Patients also receive a small card and chapstick advertising the Major Angel Program when they are dismissed. How Do We Honor These Angels? Donors will receive a personalized letter from the Foundation thanking them for their gift. The Major Angel Honorees receive a personalized letter letting them know a gift has been made in their honor and a lapel pin that can be filled with a new halo each time a patient recognizes the outstanding care they provide.

Support to Major Hospital and our Patients Prescription Assistance: $4,890 Prescription Assistance provides a bridge for patients who need prescriptions but cannot afford them when they leave the hospital. While case managers work to connect these patients to long-term assistance, this program makes sure patients have their prescriptions in the interim. This is a great way to avoid costly and preventable re-admissions.

Patient and Family Support: $7,842 Sometimes patients need small healthcare related items that will help them through recovery and/or reduce stress during their stay.

You Are Not Alone Fund: $4,704 Funded through community events, the You are Not Alone Fund supports Benesse patients in need by helping with certain medical and day-to-day living expenses.

Friends of Nursing Award: $500 The award recognizes the contributions made by an individual who, through their actions or involvement with the nursing profession, has allowed the nurses at Major Hospital to provide a higher quality of care to our patients, their families and the community. Devon Wilson, a telemetry technician, received the award in 2015.

Clinical Relationship with IUPUC: $5,000 This grant was made to help reach the goal of 80 percent of nurses at MHP with a BSN by 2020. IUPUC will also provide doctoral nurses for research projects and higher level consulting.

Employee Relief Fund: $1,974 Funded by employees, this pool of money offers financial assistance to qualifying employees facing a financial crisis.

Benesse Fund: $1,081 To help replace plants and to perform maintenance in the Healing Garden.

Board of Directors Board members are responsible for the continuing growth and integrity of the Major Hospital Foundation. They accomplish this through setting policy, providing oversight, and strategic planning. Each July, the Major Hospital Foundation says “good-bye” to faithful board members whose terms have expired and “welcome” to new board members. Those leaving the board in 2015 were Jill Shammas and Dave Wheeler. The Foundation thanks them for their kind service and valuable governance over the years. We’re happy to welcome Janie Schuster and Sally Vaught to the Board.
