HEAD COACHES JOE MORAN AND JAKE MORAN The 2002–2003 golf season marks the 10th season at the helm for Joe and Jake Moran. With several key players lost due to graduation, last season looked to be a rebuilding year. However, the team was consistent and showed continual improvement towards the end of the spring, placing 4th in the Scotty Duncan Invitational Tournament. Throughout the year, the Morans led the Wildcats to four top-ten finishes. In 1994, the Moran brothers garnered their first tournament win at Villanova when the Wildcats won the University of MarylandHead Coaches Baltimore County Tournament Title. Joe (R) and Jake (L) Moran. In 1996, the Wildcats finished second at both the Stabler Invitational and James Madison Invitational. The Morans, who are members of the Philadelphia Country Club and Overbrook Golf Club, are also active members of the Villanova Golf Alumni Association. Joe served as the President of the Golf Association of Philadelphia from 1981–83. He is the Vice President of Sales for Koty Millwork. Joe and his wife Patricia reside in Bryn Mawr, and are the parents of six children and have fourteen grandchildren. Jake and his wife Sheila are the parents of three children and have eight grandchildren.

Villanova Golf 2002-2003

SEASON PREVIEW 2002–2003 osing no seniors to graduation, this year’s Villanova men’s golf squad looks to build and develop on the solid foundation of their returning players. With one more year of experience under their belts and a contingent of talented freshmen looking to step in, this season finds head coaches Joe and Jake Moran very optimistic. “This is the year of promise,” states Joe Moran. With senior captain Joe Ryan (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) and returning letterwinners Matt Gugino (Leroy, NY/Leroy), John Ward (Millburn, NJ/Millburn) and John Keller (Bayside, NY/St. Mary’s) leading the way, the team is anxious to pick up where it left off last year, finishing in the top 5 in their final two tournaments of the season. With junior captain Ryan sitting out all but two tournaments last year, Matt Gugino stepped nicely into a leadership role, as well as improving on a stellar freshman season. He was among the team’s top two finishers in 6 of the twelve tournaments in 2001–2002, including a 9th place finish at the Scotty Duncan Memorial Invitational. Gugino looks to lower his 77.38 stroke average of last year, as well as lower his collegiate-best round score of 70. Joining the team as walk-ons in 2001–2002, John Ward and John Keller quickly began making names for themselves. Keller had three top-20 finishes in the 8 tournaments in which he participated. Ward played consistent golf all season long, finishing with a 78.82 stroke average and a 22nd place finish at the Rehoboth Beach Invitational. Also looking to make an impact again this year are sophomores Jeff Parry (Columbia,MD/Mt. St. Joseph), Kevin Foster (Newington, CT/ Newington), Charlie Nettleton (Lisle, IL/Benet Academy), Chris Peterson (Edina,MN/The Blake School) and Shawn Standen (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake).

L

Parry led the team with a76.53 average and an outstanding 6th place finish at the Navy Fall Invitational. Foster and Peterson showed continual improvement throughout the season, and Nettleton recorded a 14th place finish at the Canisius College Invitational. Standen capped off a stellar freshman season with an 18th place finish at the Princeton Invitational and a 78.20 stroke average. The Morans brought in an extremely talented recruiting class of seven freshman who must qualify for the team. All seven freshmen, Doug Anders (Chestnut Hill Academy/Philadelphia,PA), Dan Duca (Wayne Valley Sr. High/Wayne, NJ), Steve Gri´se (Simsbury/Simsbury. CT), Jon Hewett (O’Gorman/Sioux Falls, SD), Colin Mahon (Millbrook School/Rhinebeck, NY), Chester Patterson (Taft School/Watertown, CT), Henry Watson (Shady Side Academy/Pittsburgh, PA), have a handicap of two or less. “Big things are expected from the sophomore class this season. It is a big burden for the sophomores to bear, but they have 4 tremendous players to learn from in Joe Ryan, Matt Gugino, John Keller and John Ward,” said coach Joe Moran. “We are thrilled with the talent available to us, and the players will hopefully come through with some low scores and tournament wins.” The Wildcats finished 27th out of 47 teams in their district last year, but the Morans believe that an improvement into the top 10 is not out of reach. If the Wildcats consistently play to their potential, 2002-2003 could be an exciting year on the green for the Morans and their talented group of golfers.

Villanova Golf 2002-2003

2001–2002 YEAR IN REVIEW ith no seniors on last year’s squad, the underclassmen came together to play solid, consistent golf and turned in a very respectable season. Junior Matt Gugino and sophomores Jeff Parry and John Keller led the Wildcats to eleven top 15 finishes, including three finishes in the top 10. Villanova led off the season September 8th and 9th, travelling to Annapolis, MD for the Navy Fall Invitational. Freshman Jeff Parry placed 6th overall with a two-day 71-72-143. Villanova placed 18th overall. The weekend of September 22nd and 23rd found the Wildcats competing in the James Madison Invitational. The ‘Cats finished in 13th place, led by Parry (12th place, 70-72-142) and Gugino (31st 70-76-146). Villanova landed its first top ten finish at The McLaughlin Invitational, placing 8th. Jeff Parry placed 18th in the 72-hole tournament, with a final score of 221. John Ward also contributed to the team’s standing with a 29th place finish (7280-73-225), including a 67 in the second round. Back home for the Temple Invitational, the team received consistent performances from Gugino (23rd, 77-77-154), and Parry (34th 79-79-158), on the way to a t-12 finish. The Wildcats shot a combined 318-320-638. Villanova finished in 13th place for its next two tournaments, the Stabler Invitational and the Georgetown Hoya Invitational. John Keller shot a season-best 152 for both tournaments, earning 26th place and 21st place finishes, respectively. Also at the Hoya Invitational, Chris Peterson recorded his season-best finish with a 29th place 76-78-154. The Hoya Invitational marked the end of the fall season, highlighted by the 8th place finish at the challenging McLaughlin Invitational. Leading off the spring season, the Wildcats headed to the Colonial Intercollegiate tournament, where Charlie Nettleton shot his best round of the season, a 79-75-154, giving him a 38th place finish. Shawn Standen also turned in a strong outing with a 48th place finish. Overall, the team finished in 13th place. The Navy Spring Invitational also proved to be a 13th place finish for the Wildcats. John Ward (81-84-165) was the ‘Cats’ top finisher in 47th place, while John Keller (83-83-166) placed 52nd. The following weekend at the Princeton Invitational, Shawn Standen shot his best rounds of the season (74-73-147), good enough for an 18th place finish. Charlie Nettleton also recorded hid best round of the season, a 79-73-152, on the way to a 52nd place finish. As a team, the ‘Cats finished tied for 14th. Villanova saved its best for the last three tournaments of the season, finishing in the top 10 each time. At the Rehoboth Beach Invitational, the team finished 9th overall with John Keller shot a commanding 76-71-147, placing him 8th. Matt Gugino’s 153 earned him a 20th place finish. Kevin Foster recorded a personal-best 77-77-154 on the way to his season-best 22nd place finish. John Ward

W

also recorded his best score and finish of the season with a 74-80-154, landing him in 22nd place. The Wildcats kept their momentum going into the Canisius College Invitational, where they battled to a 5th place finish. Personal highlights included Matt Gugino’s 10th-place finish, Nettleton’s season-best 14th place, and Keller’s 161, placing him 17th. The last tournament of the spring was the Scotty Duncan Memorial. Still riding the high from their past two top-10 finishes, Villanova turned in its best performance of the season - a 4th place finish. Gugino continued his hot streak and finished 9th overall while shooting a 73-76-149. Jeff Parry added a 12th place finish, and Charlie Nettleton and Kevin Foster added 29th and 33rd finishes, respectively. With six different top finishers in twelve tournaments, Villanova exhibited its depth and talent in the 2001–2002 season. After an inconsistent beginning, the team found its niche and banded together nicely, coming on strong at the end of the spring. The 2001–2002 Villanova golf team laid the foundation for things to come this season, and if they pick up where they left off last spring, the ‘Cats will be a formidable opponent in 2002–2003.
