The Mission We know that when a woman has the support of her sisters, she is unstoppable. Women for Women International has provided nearly 429,000 women survivors of war, civil strife, and other conflicts with the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency, thereby promoting viable civil societies. WfWI believes that if a woman is armed with skills, knowledge, and resources, she can create sustainable change for herself, her family, and her community. WfWI’s approach and impact have been recognized with the prestigious Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize. In 1993, Women for Women International opened its doors in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today it works directly with women in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda, and South Sudan. WfWI brings participating women together in a safe space to learn life, business, and vocational skills in a one-year social and economic empowerment program. Each enrolled woman receives a vital monthly stipend that enables her to participate. Beyond the classroom, women become catalysts for progress and change, creating ripple effects in their families and their communities. Women more than quadruple their average daily income, from $0.41 when they enroll to $1.98 two years after completing the program. The overwhelming majority invest their savings in growing their own small businesses and in their children. Through the program, women achieve four key outcomes:  Earn and save money: Women learn basic business skills and a vocational skill with earning power in their own local markets. They begin to save and receive support to form cooperatives after they graduate.  Develop health and well-being: Women learn how to manage their own health, including reproductive health and stress management; learn about good hygiene and nutrition for their entire families; and are connected with local healthcare providers.  Influence decisions in their homes and communities: Women are empowered to claim fundamental rights and rights recognized in their own countries begin to educate other women, as well. They learn the importance of civic participation, voting, and negotiation.  Connect to networks for support and advocacy: Women build support networks: they share ideas and resources, invest together, and help each other find solutions to common challenges. Since 2001, WfWI has engaged more than 8,000 men as allies and advocates. The Culture Empowerment and teamwork are just as important in Women for Women International’s culture as they are in its programs around the world. New CEO Jennifer L. Windsor, a 25-year veteran of international development and human rights work, sets the standard for collaborative impact. Before joining WfWI, Windsor served as Associate Dean for Programs in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, where she helped create the Georgetown Initiative for Women, Peace, and Security. She also served at USAID, where she led efforts to create the Center for Democracy and Governance. A graduate of the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton with a Master’s in Public Administration, Windsor has made numerous media appearances on behalf of the people and issues for which WfWI fights.

Under Windsor’s leadership, Women for Women International is committed to mobilizing greater resources, expanding WfWI’s reach around the world, and increasing programs for marginalized women. The organization also continues to be actively supported by its founder, Zainab Salbi, who grew WfWI from its inaugural efforts to help 30 women to its record of helping nearly 429,000 in 8 conflict areas. The Opportunity Women for Women International is seeking a Vice President of Marketing, Development & Communications. The VP MDC plays a significant role in WfWI’s success, overseeing a set of integrated strategies to attract private investment and to enable the growth of the organization and the hundreds of thousands of women it serves. The new VP MDC will have the opportunity to evaluate current strategies, consolidate strengths, and develop and implement a plan to expand both grassroots and high-level engagement, meet the annual fundraising goal, and expand revenue over the next 3 years. The VP will have overall responsibility for brand management and all non-governmental revenue sources, including sponsorships, direct mail, online giving, major donors, and corporate and foundation support. Reporting directly to the CEO, the VP will work closely will be a member of the senior executive team and work closely with an engaged Global Board of Directors. Strategy and Direction  Understand and become an authoritative voice on Women for Women International’s mission, history, values, culture, policies, programs, and finances.  Create an integrated marketing, development, and communications program that advances WfWI’s goals: Develop plans to increase visibility, awareness, and excitement and lay the foundation for expanded giving. Create a strategic fundraising plan that ensures that all the elements of WfWI’s development model—including sponsorships, small donors, major giving, and institutional support—are effectively integrated and leveraged to maximize engagement and revenue. Identify and evaluate opportunities for new forms of collaboration within WfWI and new forms of outreach to demographic communities of potential donors. Formulate specific objectives and metrics and continually evaluate the Marketing and Development programs against them.  Ensure the alignment of Marketing and Development initiatives with WfWI’s grassroots mission and strategic vision.  Clearly articulate industry best practices and ensure they are appropriately adapted to WfWI’s mission and culture.  As a member of the senior executive team, provide vital input on strategic and operational planning and positioning for the organization.

The Opportunity Development  Develop and implement a comprehensive plan to strengthen WfWI’s small giving program, including monthly sponsorships, small donations, direct mail, and online giving.  Expand and diversify participation in sponsorships in order to provide mission-critical support for women enrolled in training WfWI initiatives.  Oversee a robust direct mail and digital giving program: direct the strategy and design for direct mail appeals, select and manage vendors to execute the program, and track and analyze data to achieve new efficiencies and growth.  Steer the design and growth of an individual major gifts pipeline by ensuring that assets are aggressively leveraged, that an effective moves management process is clearly developed, and that the team of major and principal gift officers is well supported.  Develop and implement strategies to effectively steward donors and increase giving at all levels.  Provide strategic direction and oversight for a high-level foundation and corporate giving program.  Collaborate with the CEO and Board to provide guidance and support for high-level relationshipbuilding and solicitations.  Participate directly in securing support by identifying and closing significant gifts.

Marketing and Communications  Provide strategic direction for marketing strategies that broaden and deepen support among prospective and actual partners and donors in both the US and UK.  Oversee the collection of stories and the development and testing of creative content that articulates the case for long-term donor and partner support.  Oversee the design and creation of compelling donor communications and stewardship materials that advance the WfWI brand. Team Building and Management  Provide steady, strong, and supportive leadership for a staff of 27, including directors, officers, associates, and support staff.  Foster camaraderie and collaboration throughout the department while modeling the cultivation of collegial relationships across all levels—with donors, Board and volunteer leadership, colleagues, and vendors.  Establish performance measures and consistently evaluate the effectiveness of the entire program, making adjustments as necessary.  Generate and manage the MDC budget in a way that efficiently utilizes WfWI resources and maximizes return on investment.

The Candidate The ideal Vice President of Marketing, Development & Communications will combine a record of mature and steady leadership skills with expertise in both direct marketing and individual major gifts. The VP will be charismatic, inspiring, and collaborative in working with internal and external partners, including staff, Board members and volunteers, and donors. S/he will have experience building well-supported and highfunctioning teams that have worked seamlessly together to advance a prominent organization’s goals and will be deeply engaged in and committed to becoming a key member of WfWI’s culture and supporting its strategic vision. Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:  At least 10 years senior leadership experience, with 5 years in development and marketing.  Record of leading, managing, and integrating an ambitious, forward-thinking development and marketing program that advanced an organization’s mission and financial goals.  Extensive direct marketing experience, including a sophisticated understanding of how to design a small donor program to generate revenue and build a major gifts pipeline.  Outstanding major gift fundraising record in a complex non-profit environment, with a demonstrated ability to build a donor pipeline, secure six- and seven-figure gifts, and increase giving levels and revenue.  Extensive experience cultivating and managing relationships with high-level donors and volunteers, including effectively engaging them in the fundraising process.  Experience working with foundations, including identifying foundation prospects, cultivating and stewarding foundation relationships, and overseeing the development of proposals.  Advanced understanding of both restricted and unrestricted giving.  Keen understanding of how to use creative content to drive marketing and development.  Strong fiscal management skills, including profit and loss responsibility for $10M+ budgets.  Knowledge of and passion for women’s issues, international development, and/or conflict management, with the ability to serve as a compelling ambassador for these issues.  Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. Leadership Style  Demonstrated ability to build a well-supported, carefully nurtured, and high-performing team.  Clear evidence of a management style that emphasizes collaboration.  Ability to work effectively with and gain the respect of multiple constituencies, including senior executives and decision-makers, individual and institutional partners at all levels, staff and team members across departments, and marketing and communications vendors.  Calm, focus, and maturity, with the ability to organize complex work by a variety of contributors and to remain gracious under pressure.  Demonstrated ability to model a positive attitude that emphasizes possibilities and solutions.  Flexibility and creativity in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
