Sheep and ruminant program A program is being developed to be of interest to both private practitioner and agency veterinarians. There will be a range of topics covering diverse subjects such as practical methodology and ideas, field experiences, research, and policy or regulatory activities. The importance of young veterinarians developing strong scientific skills is a core value of ASV. Of particular interest will be presentations of research undertaken as honours or postgraduate projects by recently qualified veterinarians, as part of the Hugh Gordon Memorial Awards. It is proposed to utilise local experience, as scientific presentations and field trips, to explore a range of current priorities including vaccination against ovine footrot, the practical use of abattoir surveillance data, and innovative cropping/grazing interactions in cooler climates. Because of relatively short distances to travel, field trips may be available during or immediately before the conference period. There is already support for sessions devoted to disaster management to cover bushfires and natural events as well as trucking accidents. These sessions are likely to be held jointly with the cattle program and are intended to provide veterinarians who may become involved in such situations with a good understanding of requirements and the veterinary role. A series of invited and proffered papers will deal with how to investigate and manage suspected plant poisonings. These sessions are intended to provide information on how to best approach such events as well as to introduce new information from recent research. The program committee is inviting papers on both ovine and bovine paratuberculosis, to bring more recent field experience and research to the attention of veterinarians dealing with the management of the diseases at all levels. We have offers from researchers to provide interim or final reports of current research projects in various areas of sheep health and welfare. Other papers will explore issues which may require additional research including crossspecies transmission of significant infections. The program will include a mix of invited and proffered papers from veterinarians involved in all aspects of sheep or goat medicine. Expressions of interest to present a paper at this conference close on Monday 4 August 2014, with a final paper for the proceedings required by December.
