Versatile Polyurea Coatings from PPG

Heavy-Duty Polyurea Coatings from a Global Leader THE POWER OF POLYUREA Polyurea is a high-tech, elastomeric coating that is formulated to be exceptionally flexible yet extremely strong, making it an amazingly versatile protective coating that can be used on vehicle bedliners, cabs, underbodies and much more. Polyurea, like two-component urethane coatings, is formed by spray-applying a resin and cross-linker together. PPG’s proprietary resin blend and patented cross-linker allow the curing process to occur very rapidly and to be much more tolerant to moisture than the curing process of typical urethane coatings. Consequently, polyurea coatings can be applied on the production line or in the field with a reduced risk of defects due to moisture and humidity. Unlike the majority of liquid coatings, PPG’s polyurea coatings contain no solvents. This means that they are non-flammable, and contain no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). PPG’s polyurea products cure at room temperature, which helps save energy by completely eliminating the need to bake parts after application. Thanks to the unique chemistry of the polyureas, the coatings are often tack-free in less than one minute. Polyurea’s elastomeric nature means that it can withstand impact, chipping, abrasion and gouging – all without being compromised.

Coatings for Bedliners and Beyond PERFORMANCE, VERSATILITY AND CHOICE For nearly a decade, PPG has been supplying polyurea coatings to major automotive OEMs for use as bedliners in hundreds of thousands of pickups. PPG offers two distinct lines of heavy-duty polyurea performance coatings. DURABULL® extreme-duty coatings are a proven bedliner solution. Providing exceptional physical protection, durability and toughness, DuraBull coatings are the only choice for an extreme-duty bedliner. Typical polyurea coatings use an aromatic formulation that begins to fade and fail in sunlight after only a few months of exposure. DuraBull coatings, however, use proprietary aliphatic resins and cross-linkers. The resin blend has not been diluted by the inferior chemistry found in polyurethanes, so the final coating is exceptionally durable and colorfast. Aliphatic polyurea technology is light stable as well, allowing DuraBull coatings to provide excellent UV protection against yellowing and chalking. DuraBull coatings have been tested for resistance to weathering, fading, and color change in punishing standardized tests such as Florida Exposure, WEATHER-OMETER® (WOM) and QUV testing. Equipment Requirements

Non-Slip XT Aggregate: Extreme slip resistance, 16-20 grit

For optimal adhesion and maximum performance, an appropriate primer is recommended. PPG offers a full complement of liquid, powder, and electrocoat primers that have been tested for compatibility with DuraBull and DragonHide coatings.

Due to the extremely low tack time, product must be sprayed with PPG-approved, high-pressure, impingement-mixing spray systems. Please contact your PPG representative for equipment details.

NON-SLIP SAFETY AGGREGATE The majority of non-slip safety coatings available today are applied by roller or hand broadcasting, both widely inconsistent and inefficient methods. Because the aggregate is placed on top of the coating, it quickly wears away. PPG, however, has developed an optional, non-slip, recycled plastic aggregate that bonds to, and is encapsulated by, DuraBull and DragonHide polyurea coatings. PPG’s proprietary spray process ensures efficient, even distribution throughout the coating in just one step. This combined product retains all of the great performance features of DuraBull or DragonHide coatings, but adds the safety of a non-slip coating.

EXPERT SERVICE PPG’s experts can assist you in making sure your equipment meets the stringent temperature, pressure and mix ratio requirements critical to the successful application of DuraBull and DragonHide coatings. Testing and calibration is performed to ensure the equipment is working properly. PPG experts are also available to provide on-site training on how to spray the products safely and productively. PPG maintains several Centers of Excellence that support DuraBull and DragonHide coatings. Our Flint, Michigan facility conducts application research and development, studies robotic and hand spray capabilities and offers full technical support. Our Cleveland, Ohio facility performs formulation research and development, color matching and a full complement of physical and corrosion testing. Finally, our Euclid, Ohio facility manages applications, analysis and R&D for polyurea coatings and other engineered products.
