Verifi™ Bed Bug Detector Best Management Practices The Verifi™ bed bug detector is intended for detection of bed bugs only and does not prevent, destroy, repel, or mitigate bed bugs or any other pest. The Verifi bed bug detector is not a control product. The Verifi bed bug detector is intended for use by professionals. Since all bed bug infestations are unique, these recommendations are a guide to aid the professional in proper use of the Verifi Bed Bug Detector. Verifi bed bug detector utilizes a patent-pending technology to provide continuous active bed bug detection. The Verifi™ CO2 Booster Pack uses a chemical reaction to provide a strong 24 hour signal to capture bed bugs looking to feed, without the need for batteries or other power sources. The Verifi™ Lure provides 90-day pheromone and kairomone release to attract both aggregation-seeking and host-seeking bed bugs. Placement: Place the Verifi bed bug detector on hard vertical surfaces near areas conducive to bed bug infestations; such as, headboards, box springs, walls, dressers and other furniture. It may also be placed under or next to furniture. Four Verifi bed bug detectors per room are recommended. Given the limited distance bed bugs can detect carbon dioxide and other attractants, four detectors allow for better detection rates The Verifi bed bug detector should be placed on or adjacent to the most likely areas of infestation, which are in areas of high human activity. The Verifi bed bug detector must be placed vertically with the pitfall at the top and the top of the detector level with the floor. Be sure to leave enough room above the device in order to allow the Verifi™ Core to be removed from the holster following installation. In a bedroom, place Verifi bed bug detectors either on the box spring, bed frame or on the wall next to each side of the mattress, box spring, or bed frame at the head end. Place the Verifi bed bug detectors in such a way that they are in contact with or immediately adjacent to the mattress or box spring. Place the third and fourth Verifi bed bug detectors on the footboard, bedroom wall, adjacent to or on another piece of furniture where infestation is suspected, such as a chair or night stand. Note: The adhesive may cause damage to paint and drywall when the detector is removed. Recommended placements are shown in Figure 1.

In other rooms such as a living room or office, place two Verifi bed bug detectors on the wall behind a couch or a frequently used chair such that the Verifi bed bug detector is in contact or immediately adjacent to both the wall and the furniture. Note: The adhesive may cause damage to paint and drywall when the detector is removed. Place other Verifi bed bug detectors on a wall or other hard surface in contact with or immediately adjacent to any other frequently used piece of furniture. Verifi Bed Bug Detectors may also be placed vertically under or next to a couch or chair. Verifi bed bug detectors should not be placed near open flames or heat sources. Recommended placements are shown in Figure 2.

Remember that a bed bug infestation may originate in rooms adjacent to the suspected areas. Inspecting and monitoring adjacent rooms in a 360 degree pattern around the suspected room is recommended to help identify the extent or origination of the infestation. Place four Verifi bed bug detectors in any room adjacent to, above or below the suspected room. When using Verifi to confirm that a treatment program is successful, place Verifi bed bug detectors in the treated room and any room adjacent to, above or below the treated room. Inspection: Inspection of the Verifi bed bug detector should focus on the pitfall and the harborage. Bed bugs may also be found on or near the Verifi bed dug detector, on the zip-tie insertion points, or in the Verifi Holster. If bed bugs are not found upon initial inspection, use a magnification glass to complete a thorough inspection of the Verifi bed bug detector for bed bug nymphs, eggs, fecal spotting, or shed skins, focusing on both the pitfall and the harborage. Limit movement of the Verifi bed bug detector or place in a tray while inspecting it to ensure containment of any bed bugs. The Verifi bed bug detector should be cleaned of dust and debris prior to reactivation for continued detection. Cleaning: The Verifi bed bug detector is intended for on-going bed bug monitoring. Verifi bed bug detectors may contain live bed bugs after use, which should be collected and properly disposed of. Spraying all pieces of the Verifi bed bug detector with CB-40® is recommended when bed bugs are found. Remove any bed bugs, cast skins and other detritus from the pitfall and dispose of properly. Wipe the pitfall and harborage area of the Verifi Core with a clean cloth. Once the Verifi Core has been cleaned, the Verifi bed bug detector can be re-activated using a new Verifi CO2 Booster Pack and Verifi Lure following the Set up and Activation instructions. If the bed bug service is complete, enclose all Verifi bed bug detector components in a plastic bag and dispose of properly. Reactivation: Reactivate the detector by inserting a new Verifi CO2 Booster Pack and new Verifi Lure into the existing Verifi Core. The Verifi CO2 Booster Pack and Verifi Lure should be replaced at regular intervals not to exceed 90 days. Remove zip-tie(s) and replace the Verifi CO2 Booster Pack and Verifi Lure following the Set Up and Activation Instructions on the packaging.

Verifi Bed Bug Detection Use Options: 1. As part of an ongoing long term bed bug monitoring program 2. To establish if a suspected bed bug infestation exists 3. To confirm that a bed bug treatment was effective 4. As part of a canine inspection program for bed bug detection The following are recommendations to aid the PMP in determining an appropriate strategy for using the detector. 1.

As part of an ongoing long-term bed bug monitoring program a. Place detectors on vertical surfaces in areas susceptible to bed bug infestations. Install four Verifi bed bug detectors in the room and each of the adjoining rooms, including rooms adjacent to, above and below the infested room. b. Inspect Verifi bed bug detectors for activity within one to seven days after activation. For continued monitoring, Verifi bed bug detectors should be checked for activity at regular intervals not to exceed 90 days. c. If bed bugs are detected, remove all bed bugs and evidence of bed bugs from the Verifi bed bug detectors before reuse and treat all infested rooms. See cleaning instructions above. d. If no bed bugs are found after 90 days, reactivate Verifi bed bug detectors with a new Verifi Lure and Verifi CO2 Booster Pack. To establish if a suspected bed bug infestation exists a. Identify areas of suspected infestation. b. Place Verifi bed bug detectors on vertical surfaces in areas of concern as well as areas conducive to bed bug infestations. c. Use of four Verifi Bed Bug Detectors per room is recommended. d. Inspect Verifi bed bug detectors for activity between one and seven days after activation. e. If no bed bugs are found, the Verifi bed bug detectors may be left in place and checked for activity at regular intervals not to exceed 90 days f. If bed bugs are detected, all evidence of bed bugs should be removed from detectors before reuse. To confirm that a bed bug treatment was effective a. Place Verifi bed bug detectors on vertical surfaces in and around areas of previous infestations as well as areas susceptible to bed bug infestations. Use of four Verifi Bed Bug Detectors per room is recommended. i. After chemical application, Verifi bed bug detectors can be activated seven to ten days after treatment to reduce the chances for false positive detection. ii. After a heat treatment, Verifi bed bug detectors can be activated after the room returns to normal temperature. b. Inspect Verifi bed bug detectors for activity between one and seven days after activation. c. If no bed bugs are found, Verifi bed bug detectors may be left in place and should be checked for activity at regular intervals not to exceed 90 days. d. If bed bugs are detected, all evidence of bed bugs should be removed from Verifi bed bug detectors before reuse. As part of a canine inspection program for bed bugs detection a. Verifi bed bug detectors can be used to confirm bed bug presence in area(s) targeted by canine inspection as having an active bed bug infestation. Place Verifi bed bug detectors in any areas identified by canine inspection as positive for bed bugs and in other areas conducive to bed bug infestations. b. Inspect Verifi bed bug detectors for activity between one and seven days after activation. c. If no bed bugs are found, the Verifi bed bug detectors may be left in place and checked for activity at regular intervals not to exceed 90 days.

Treatment and Control Options: The Verifi bed bug detector is not a control product. The Verifi bed bug detector is intended for detection of bed bugs only and does not prevent, destroy, repel, or mitigate bed bugs or any other pest. Once bed bugs are detected, the infested area should be treated by a professional. The Verifi bed bug detector can remain in the infested area during chemical treatments. However, do not directly spray Verifi bed bug detectors with any residual chemical treatment. Prior to any heat treatment, the Verifi Core including the CO2 Booster Pack and Lure must be removed from the area to be treated. The holster can remain in the area during heat treatment. Below is a list of chemical control products that are recommended for use when active bed bug infestations are found. This is not a complete list and is only to be used as a reference guide. Please read and fully understand all chemical control product labels prior to using them, as labels change frequently and contain important safety and use directions. Always read and follow the label directions. For additional information and to sign up for FMC’s Label Change notification service, visit www.fmcprosolutions.com.
