Vectren Foundation Annual Report

Just imagine

the possibilities. Foundation

From the Chairman Community; what was once just a corporate concept has quickly evolved into an employee-driven philosophy. Raising the bar, setting new standards, pushing the envelope ... however you characterize it, the employees of Vectren continue to find new ways to impact their communities and exemplify Vectren’s most important core value. Eighty employees joining forces in the Evansville Multiple Sclerosis Walk, 90 employees and family members serving as zoo volunteers for Evansville’s Mesker Park Zoo and more than 140 nonprofit and civic group board positions filled with Vectren colleagues ... these are just a few examples of outreach efforts. The Vectren Foundation then reinforces this employee volunteerism through $1.7 million in corporate contributions. Through four areas of giving; Civic, Education, Arts & Culture and Health & Human Services, our Foundation reached more than 450 organizations in 2003 throughout Indiana and west central Ohio. It’s Vectren’s Linda Mumford volunteering a few hours per week for Piqua, Ohio’s Bethany Center and the Foundation contributes $2,500 to restock its food pantry ... or Jerry Ulrey serving on the United Way of Southwestern Indiana’s board with the Foundation backing his efforts with $7,500 to support the United Way Volunteer of the Year dinner. Stories like these exemplify the natural fit between employee outreach and the mission of the Vectren Foundation. As you can see in this annual report, the reach and diverse nature of our community partnerships and the Vectren Foundation continues to grow as does the generous spirit of our employees. With our commitment of leadership, employee volunteerism and financial support to our communities, just imagine the possibilities. Sincerely,

Niel C. Ellerbrook Vectren Chairman, President and CEO

Customer Colleagues Community Capital

Community Building Employee groups of 15 or more who volunteer four hours each toward a community project will be given a $2,500 Vectren Foundation check to be presented to the project agency.

Through its sponsorship of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Vectren funded “Carver Kids,” a musical instruction program held at the Carver Community Organization. This program gets inner city kids involved in music at an early age.

Arts & Culture New Albany, Indiana's Carnegie Center for Art & History was a first-time recipient of the Vectren Foundation in 2003 with a $2,000 gift. The grant supported a new, interactive exhibit highlighting the history of the Underground Railroad in Floyd County.

Helping the Muncie Center for the Arts continue upon its mission to nurture creative expression, the Vectren Foundation pledged $1,100. The money was used to expand the Center's after school program with the Muncie Ballet Studio and provide more scholarships for those wanting to get involved.

Health & Human Services Dozens of Vectren employees throughout the service territory and their family and friends participated in United Way’s Day of Caring. Employees in Clarksville, Columbus, Centerville, Fairborn, Evansville, Boonville, Bloomington, Muncie, New Castle, Bedford, Rockport and Dale spent the day working at a United Way agency. The Bethany Center of Piqua, Ohio was able to further its mission to assist lowincome individuals with material items and job search assistance thanks to a $2,500 check from the Vectren Foundation. In conjunction with the gift, the Troy region employees conducted a month-long food drive to refill the shelves of the center's food pantry.

In Attica, Ind., the Vectren Foundation awarded a $750 grant to Area Sharing Kindness, Inc. to assist families or individuals in Warren and Fountain counties under financial stress due to emergency situations. The agency provides supplies such as food, clothing, household items and toys to victims of house fires or other unexpected tragedies.

Civic The 2003 Vectren Dayton Air Show brought the national spotlight to Ohio's Miami Valley in its celebration of 100 years of powered flight. Vectren had the privilege of hosting this special anniversary that capped off the city of Dayton's 17-day tribute to the Wright Brothers. Reaching new heights, the Vectren Dayton Air Show was extended to four action-packed days with more than 25 aerial performances including acts from all four U.S. military sectors.

Helping our service men and women in law enforcement and fire rescue, Vectren lent a helping hand to two southwestern Indiana fund-raising efforts. Vectren helped kick off the campaign for the Jefferson Township Fire Department in Otwell, Ind., with a $1,500 donation to boost their goal to purchase a new fire and rescue vehicle. Just two weeks later, the Posey County, Ind. Sheriff's Department was able to declare a permanent home for its K-9 unit and dog, Miki, with the final amount needed, a $2,000 gift from the Vectren Foundation.

Vectren partnered with Butler University, the city of Indianapolis and the Lilly Foundation to further develop the “Celebration of Diversity” distinguished lecture series. Over the next three years, this program will bring nationally renowned speakers to Butler's campus in Indianapolis. Featured speakers have included Harry Belafonte, Dr. Cornel If a Vectren employee West, Edward James contributes 40 hours of volunteer Olmos and service per year to a tax-exempt Russell Simmons. organization, the Foundation will

With a $100,000 commitment over the next four years, Vectren and Peyton Manning’s PeyBack Foundation, in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Education, debuted Bright Ideas, a classroom enrichment grant program designed to reward creative and innovative ideas in classroom instruction. 2003’s series awarded $25,000 in grants to Kindergarten through 12th grade educators who sought a funding source to implement a new program or great idea. The winners, 58 in all, were selected from a total of over 700 applications throughout the Vectren Energy Delivery service territory in Indiana and Ohio.

Vectren reintroduced the Discover Electricity program in its southwestern Indiana electric service territory. Through story and activity books, local kindergarten students learn about electricity and its safety precautions. The final session ends with a visit from a Vectren lineman including a pole-climbing demonstration. In its first year back, Discover Electricity reached 1,500 students in more than 20 classrooms.

Higher Learning The Vectren Foundation will match any employee gift to an accredited college or

Education

university, up to $2,000 annually.

Supporting efforts to help elementary students with literacy, Vectren donated $5,000 to the Purdue Network Literacy Project. Purdue University President Martin Jischke and Indiana Representative and Purdue University School of Outreach Education Outreach Liaison Sheila Klinker accepted the funds that will go to the Indiana Reading Recovery program. Using early intervention, this program pairs specially trained teachers with students struggling with basic reading for 30 minutes of daily instruction over a 12- to 16-week period.
