Vancouver Island University CONVOCATION PROGRAM

J a n u a r y 28 & 29 • 2 0 1 3

The motto Discoveries in Education was adopted in 1969. These words, together with a shield depicting a Spanish barque under sail, represented VIU’s logo when the institution was known as Malaspina College. The use of the original motto and the Spanish vessel in the Coat of Arms provides a permanent link in the official grant to a symbol and logotype which served Malaspina well during a key period of its development. The motto also provides a link with one of Captain Alejandro Malaspina’s ships—the Descubierta—which means Discovery.

2012 H o n o r a ry D o cto r o f L e t t e r s – G o r d o n A pp e l b e S m i t h Gordon Appelbe Smith is one of the most prominent and prolific artists working in Canada today. A painter, printmaker and teacher, Smith was born in England in 1919. In 1933, he immigrated to Winnipeg where he studied under L.L. Fitzgerald. Wounded during World War II, he moved to Vancouver in 1944, where he joined his wife and completed his studies at the Vancouver School of Art (VSA). Smith taught at the VSA from 1946 to 1956, and in the Faculty of Education, University of BC, as a professor of fine arts from 1956 to 1982. Since his retirement from UBC, Smith has remained an important and vital teacher, particularly of young children, and was a founding supporter of the Artists for Kids program with the North Vancouver School Board. Smith first attracted national attention for his award-winning Structure with Red Sun at the First Biennial of Canadian Painting in 1955. His work is a form of romantic lyric abstraction that balances the pervasive influence of the West Coast landscape with a gestural, non-objective manner of painting. This

6

gestural quality has become particularly pronounced in his work since the mid-1980s. Smith was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1996 for his significant contribution to Canadian culture. He also received the Order of British Columbia, as well as many other awards and honors during his lengthy career. In 1997, the Vancouver Art Gallery mounted a 55-year retrospective of this work, which was accompanied by a major book. In 2002, the Gordon and Marion Smith Foundation was established to support art education in BC through the creation of a permanent endowment fund managed by the Vancouver Foundation. In 2005, Smith was awarded the Order of the Owl from the North Vancouver Artists for Kids Trust for his unparalleled contribution to this art education program, and in 2009 he received the Governor General’s Award for Visual Art for his amazing lifetime contribution to art in Canada. In October 2012, the first public art gallery for young audiences opened in Vancouver: the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art. At the opening, Smith said, “This is a time of special and particular problems for the arts. Current major forces both in education and in our society tend to ignore the value and contribution of art. We must, more than ever, support and encourage the arts in everyday life."

2012 A l u m n i H o r i z o n A wa r d – L y n n e E. B u r n s Lynne Burns is one of Canada’s leading experts in bat ecology and conservation. VIU Biology department professor Dr. Tim Goater nominated Lynne for the Alumni Horizon Award “in recognition of her extraordinary success in her studies dealing with these highly specialized mammals, and as a marvellous ambassador of VIU over the years.” Originally from Nanoose Bay, Lynne graduated from Ballenas Secondary in Parksville in 1997. Rather quickly after graduating, she realized she wanted to pursue a degree in biology. She upgraded science credits through the Adult Basic Education program at VIU’s Parksville-Qualicum Centre and entered the biology program at VIU the following year.

This program was prepared a week before Convocation and therefore may not be complete.

In 2004, Lynne completed a Bachelor of Science degree (major in biology). A year before she graduated, she participated in VIU’s tropical field school to Belize, Central America, calling it “a pivotal moment” in her education and future career. During the field school, Lynne collected data for her fourthyear Biology 491 undergraduate research project which gave her the unique opportunity to conduct research in the tropics on bats. She investigated bat diversity and temporal variation in bat activity in Belize under the supervision of Wendy Simms in VIU’s Biology department. Lynne’s pursuit of wildlife research, particularly on bats, continued when in 2007 she completed a Master of Science degree in Applied Science at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. Her thesis research investigated the effects of forest fragmentation on a forest-dependent bat species on Prince Edward Island. Following her masters degree, Lynne worked as a Wildlife Biologist in Prince George, working on a variety of projects including bird radar and point count surveys, acoustic bat surveys and species-at-risk projects. She is currently a PhD candidate at Dalhousie University. Her research seeks to explore some of the many unknowns surrounding the autumn bat mating and migration period (called swarming). The goal is to understand the movement dynamics and population structure of typical resident hibernating bats. Lynne is using a combination of ecological research tools to explore the movements of little brown and northern long-eared bats during the autumn swarming season at sites in Maritime Canada. Her knowledge and expertise is especially important right now because of the emergent disease known as white-nose syndrome, which is killing millions of bats across North America at an alarming rate.

V ancouve r I s lan d U n ive r s ity C onvocation S ym bols Regalia Like most universities in North America, the regalia worn by Vancouver Island University’s degree students is unique to the university and representative of their area of study. The gowns are largely similar, with the difference in the sleeves: the Bachelor’s gown has closed sleeves and the Master’s gown has open sleeves. The hood colour indicates the graduate’s program or area of study: Bachelor of Arts – red; Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care – purple; Bachelor of Business Administration – regal gold; Bachelor of Education – burgundy; Bachelor of Hospitality Management – Persian turquoise; Bachelor of Interior Design – steel grey; Bachelor of Music In Jazz Studies – admiralty blue; Bachelor of Natural Resource Protection – moss green; Bachelor of Science – Aztec gold; Bachelor of Science in Nursing – teal; Bachelor of Tourism Management – royal blue; Master of Arts in Sustainable Leisure Management – crimson; Master of Business Administration – purple; Master of Education in Educational Leadership – burgundy; Master of Education in Special Education – royal blue. The Bachelor’s degree hood is edged in white and the Master’s degree hood is lined in grey. The Master of Business Administration degree hood is similar to the one used by the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom, with whom VIU originally offered its first MBA programs and continues to offer a dual MBA-MScIB program..

Pad d le The paddle that is on display during VIU’s convocation ceremonies was given to the university by Chief Shawn A-inchut Atleo when he was installed as Chancellor. This paddle, made by Brian Bob, Qwuyutsapulth of the Coast Salish/ Ucluelet First Nation, is carved of yellow cedar and signifies teamwork, pulling together, like in a canoe. The salmon carved onto the blade represents journeys; salmon leave the place where they are hatched but return later in their lives, much in the same way that youth earn an education and then return home to bring their skills and knowledge back to their communities. A paddle was presented to each of the four regional campuses with the wish that it be used at special occasions, like a graduation ceremony. The paddle given to the Nanaimo campus is a steering paddle, which helps guide us in our important journeys. It has since become an important symbol and tradition in our Convocation ceremonies.

M ac e During the Middle Ages, the metal-clad wooden mace was an effective weapon in battle. As newer and more powerful arms were developed, its military significance diminished, and it was transformed into a symbol of authority. Today, the ceremonial mace is used in many government assembly locations, such as the British and Canadian Houses of Parliament, and is carried before ecclesiastical dignitaries and in university ceremonies such as this. The mace used for VIU’s convocation was designed and created by retired art instructor John A. Charnetski in 1994. The metre-long mace is made of stainless steel and gold-plated cast bronze. It features four guardian eagles and enameled medallions bearing VIU’s coat of arms and arbutus emblems. At the convocation ceremonies, the mace is carried by a retiring member of academic faculty or administration to honour his or her contribution to Vancouver Island University.

V ancouve r I s lan d U n ive r s ity : meeting the needs of the communities it serves

Through our four campuses, over 2,000 employees and thousands of students and alumni, Vancouver Island University is a major economic engine operating in the communities of Vancouver Island and BC’s Sunshine Coast.

involved in stimulating local economic development, such as the Deep Bay Field Station, which is working towards revitalizing the shellfish farming industry in coastal and First Nations communities.

The graduates of VIU’s more than 200 degree, diploma and certificate programs are shaping our world in extraordinary ways. Our graduates also provide the region with a talent pool of highly trained individuals who are ready to take on the demands of a new economy.

E nvi r on m e ntal S u stai nab i lity : VIU is committed to exploring new ways of teaching and operating that will ensure the protection of our environment and our communities. Some of our environmental stewardship initiatives include the "bike to work week" promotion in May, the on-campus bottled water ban along with supportive water filling stations for reusable bottles and the energy management program.

In addition to providing an annual injection of over 120 million dollars into the local economy through operational spending, VIU is adding value to communities in the areas of cultural enrichment, economic development, environmental sustainability, research opportunities and social development. C u ltu ral E n r i ch m e nt : VIU adds a rich and diverse layer of cultural access to the citizens of our communities through the many cultural events hosted on each of VIU’s four campuses. VIU supports the development of arts and culture on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast through poetry readings, film festivals, Aboriginal feasts, concerts and other cultural initiatives. In addition to hosting students from more than 60 countries, VIU is proud to have one of the highest Aboriginal postsecondary participation rates in BC. We value our relationships with our Aboriginal communities and will continue to engage in initiatives that strengthen Aboriginal advancement. E con om i c D eve lopm e nt : As well as providing local economies with a skilled pool of workers, VIU invests thousands of dollars into the local marketplace through operational spending and the employment of over 2,000. VIU is also

R e s ear ch O pp ortu n iti e s : VIU averages four postgraduate scholarships for fourth year students per year. Worth approximately $19,000 each, these scholarships serve as a financial boost to help students pursuing Master’s degrees. As well, VIU’s increased focus on undergraduate research is being recognized by national funding agencies such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). S ocial D eve lopm e nt : Through our programs and projects, VIU works to enhance the quality of life for people living on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast and engages in activity that brings educational opportunities to all members of the community. At VIU, we believe education is a community asset and we are committed to strengthening our economy and positioning our region for prosperity.
