Show & Tell - There will be no show & tell this month. 50/50 Auction: Have you run out of space on your bonsai benches or in your potting shed? Are you no longer in love with that tree? Do you have pots you will never use? Bring in your unwanted bonsai related items for the auction and find a good home for them. Half of the proceeds will go to the seller and half to the Club. This is a great chance to acquire some reasonably priced bonsai related items. The proceedings are always a lot of fun! Ideally everyone attending should bring at least one item for the auction. Raffle Table - There will be no raffle table this month.. Coming In September - Show & Tell : Convention treasures.

Bonsai Clubs International The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria This story about us appeared in Bonsai & Stone Appreciation, a magazine published quarterly by Bonsai Clubs International known to promote “friendship through bonsai” . We know all about the characters shown in the picture - but one visitor is hidden in the centre. Joan Greenway of Toronto was greatly impressed by the fact that for so many years, we have been a continuous Art Gallery patron. On behalf of Bonsai Clubs International of which she is a board member and corresponding secretary, we were awarded their Medal of Excellence.

The Portland Convention of the PNBCA Several members of our society are planning to attend this Imagin & Create PNBCA convention in mid September sponsored this year by the Portland club. There is still time to register but note that the convention is actually taking place across the river from their hometown. That will be at the Hilton Hotel in Vancouver WA. In addition to the usual workshops, exhibits of fine trees, a marketplace, a working lab open to all registrants, there will be a number of 1 1/2 hour long workshops, demos and lectures designed to introduce new people to the enjoyment of attending a bonsai convention. If you are not registered but want to be, contact Registrar Margie Kinoshita at 503-860-6830.

Deadwood Some stately deadwood on an old bonsai is quite acceptable. Once the bark is gone you can paint the deadwood in such a way as it looks quite naturally ancient. Your local paint store and/or stationary shop can supply the ingredients for bleaching dry wood, namely: 1/4 cup of lime sulphur 2 inches of acrylic white paint 3 drops of India Ink Mix these ingredients thoroughly. Apply to the deadwood with a cheap 1/2” paint brush. It will have a yellow tone at first but this will change overnight to a white colour. If the colour turns out to be too white, just add a drop or two more of the ink which will result in the wood becoming more grey in colour.
