Commander‟s Corner Valley Squadron Members, Just a note to thank all those who attended the Change of Watch. The food was excellent and I believe nearly everyone got some kind of door prize. Many thanks to the members of the bridge that stayed on for another year. I look forward to working and cruising with you all as we head into another boating season. Yours Truly,

Squadron and District Commanders Time to welcome new CPS Members

We are fast approaching that time of the season for Graduation Celebrations. This is an ideal opportunity for the Squadrons to welcome these Graduates as New CPS Members, and, as New Members of the local Squadron. One of the suggestions that came out of our Membership Seminar discussions at the recent National Conference in Nanaimo, was for Squadrons to provide a Squadron Burgee (Pennant) to the Graduates / New Members, and to also consider presenting a Burgee to those New Associate Members. This gesture has been the practice in many Squadrons, and may just mean the difference of a New Member wanting to become more involved in the future. Past CPS regulations did not permit someone to fly a Burgee unless it was accompanied by a CPS Flag. This regulation has now been changed to permit any Member to fly a Burgee, even though they may not fly the CPS Flag. Take advantage of this new opportunity to expand the recognition of both CPS and your local Squadron, and build Membership participation. Thank you. Jim Brown Deputy Membership Chair

A good time was had by all with the presentations and the wonderful door prizes provided by various supporters with the help of Fred Walker, Brian Hanneson and Ted Blackall.

Student Cruise by Barb Marshall The Valley Squadron Student Cruise was held Saturday, April 16 out of Blaine, in Semiahmoo/Boundary Bay. We headed out under a mostly clear sky with a light breeze onto a calm sea; a good day to be on the water. Eight people took part, 4 on a power boat, 4 on a sailboat. One student had done prep work by watching reruns of 'Gilligan's Island' and all the students did well doing their plotting, taking fixes, using hand held compasses etc. After a time the power boat went back to the marina to practice docking while the sailboat stayed out to give people time at the tiller. A sudden turn in the weather saw wind and waves blow up into something quite nasty. Weather forecasts can be wrong - who knew??!! There was a bit of excitement aboard both boats. Handled calmly, it all became yet another chance to learn something that classroom work can't teach. The group worked together and both boats were safely brought into their slips and tied and the day's events rehashed over a social time. One student remarked that his pants had been dry and blue at the start of the day and were now damp and brown.... Boats properly maintained with safety in mind made for 'a good time was had by all' kind of day and we're eager to go again. Thank you to Mark and Jacques for the use of your boats.

Shakedown Cruise-Harrison 2011 –By Charleen & Ted Guess what?? It’s Spring, or so the date says. After many long months of reading boating magazines, attending boat shows and general day dreaming, it was finally time for the 2011 Shakedown Cruise at Harrison Lake. Time to try new do-dads, what-cha-ma-call-its and thing-a-ma-jig toys that we bought and to test the improvements we made to our boats over the winter. What a great weekend it was, rain, rain, sun and more rain. That didn’t dampen the spirits of the brave. In all, four couples , two kids and three dogs made up the weekend tally. The last to arrive was Abracadabra on Saturday afternoon. With their arrival, they were greeted with burgers off the grill and a couple of cold ones. Once we all settled in and caught up on the news over the winter, it was decided that a fire was in order for the evening (during one of the sunny periods). We combed the beaches and gathered enough wood for the evening. Night time came and the skies cleared to reveal a strange sight in the night sky – Stars!! There were plenty of them. Did the fire come in handy?? You bet!! Unfortunately, Sunday arrived too soon and the fun was coming to a close. In the

6 afternoon, Abracadabra and Plumb Crazy headed down the lake at a leisurely pace enjoying the scenery and the joy of being on the water again after such a long time. The 2011 Shakedown Cruise was a great time, and only a couple minor hiccups occurred with the boats. With an opening weekend like that, I’m sure that this year’s boating will be fantastic. Can’t wait till the next time to untie the lines and set off on another trip, another opportunity to make memories with family and friends. Remember safe boating is all of our responsibility. Let’s have a safe and enjoyable boating season.

May Long Weekend (20-23) Cruise to Fossil Bay, Sucia Island By Barb Marshall

     

Launch from either Bellingham or Blaine Municipal Marina. Launch fee is $6.00. Secure parking is free. State Park mooring fees will apply for use of the dock or mooring buoys. Rates are: $10.00 for mooring buoys or $0.50/foot for the dock (min $10.00). There will be a minus 1.4 foot tide Saturday afternoon. Deep draft boats may want to anchor out or use a mooring buoy. New docks were installed at Fossil Bay this Spring. Saving space at the dock is not allowed but rafting is. Be sure to see the China Caves and a sunset on Fox Bay

Border crossing tips:  Do not take fresh fruit and vegetables across the border – either direction.  Meat is allowed – except lamb or goat.  Only one bottle of alcohol or 6 beer each are allowed into the US duty free. Pick it up when you buy your fruits and vegetables – it’s cheaper in the US.  Don’t fuel your boat at a US gas station – some stations have a very high ethanol content (+15%) in their road fuels. Only fuel at a gas dock – the marine fuels do not contain ethanol.  If possible head out Friday. The border line-up should be shorter, and sunset is about 9:00 p.m. The water is often calm in the evening. Sucia is very popular and will fill up fast on a long weekend Free charts can be downloaded from NOAA at: http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/PacificCoastBookletCharts.htm Charts 18421, 18424 and 18430 cover the area of this cruise. They are downloadable in PDF format and can be printed in a booklet layout and/or displayed on a laptop. Contact: Cruise Master Tim Marshall 604-820-6810 or [email protected]
