of rebuilding the Aggie football program and is doing it by recruiting high school players, who will be in the program for four or five years. In 2005 the Aggies played 20 freshmen and had 12 start at least one game. In 2006, USU played 16 freshmen, including nine who started at least one game. Freshmen who started at least half of the season included LB Paul Igboeli (8 games) and QB Riley Nelson (7). Nelson led the team in passing yards (925) and was second in rushing (290). Igboeli was second on the team in tackles with 69.

YOUTH NOTE-ABLE -- Here are a couple more notes about USU's youth:

Among the players who started at least one game last season were nine freshmen, 15 sophomores, 15 juniors and just five seniors... There was only one senior who led USU in a statistical category last year (S Terrance Washington led with eight passes broken up).

OFFENSIVE NOTES -- USU's 114.8 rushing yards per game were its second most

in the last five years (ran for 117.0 in 2005)... USU ran for at least 100 yards in eight of the last nine games, including a string of seven straight (the most consecutive since 1997)... USU's 139.7 passing yards per game were its fewest since 1986 (122.5)... USU threw for 200 yards in just two games (249 at Louisiana Tech and 225 vs. Hawai'i)... USU's 254.4 yards of total offense per game were the Aggies' fewest since 1986 (192.0)... USU produced 300 or more yards in just five games, but four of those came in the final six games of the season... USU's offense did not produce a touchdown in the first four games of the season (the lone score in that time was an interception return for a score by Antonio Taylor against Wyoming)... USU was shutout four times on the year for the first time since 1939... USU's 130 points were its fewest since the 1958 team scored 123... USU had its first five interceptions thrown returned for touchdowns... The opponent's defense scored eight times on the year including six interception returns, one fumble return and one safety.

DEFENSIVE NOTES -- USU allowed more than 400 yards of total offense in eight games on the season... The opponents scored at least 40 points in each of the last five games of the year... USU's top four tacklers and 20 of top 21 tacklers were juniors or younger... Seven of the opponents' touchdowns this year were scored by their defense against the Aggie offense.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES -- With a 46-yard field goal by Bryan Shields against

Hawai'i in week nine, USU became the last team in the NCAA to make a field goal this year... Shields added the Aggies' second and final field goal of the year at Boise State in week 11.

2007 UTAH STATE FOOTBALL

Utah State Football Pre-Spring Outlook Utah State will enter the third year of the Brent Guy era as a team, which is once again young, but has experience. The Aggies return 19 starters and 37 lettermen overall and will look to improve on last year’s 1-11 record. As per usual, USU will face a daunting non-conference schedule, which features three straight road games at Wyoming, Oklahoma and Utah. USU’s lone home non-conference game will be its season opener against UNLV. In all, the Aggies will meet three teams that finished last year in the top 25 in Boise State (fifth), Oklahoma (11th) and Hawai’I (24th).

Offense New offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Darrell Dickey will see the return of seven starters and 15 total lettermen on the offensive side of the ball as he takes over this spring. Among the returnees are a host of skilled position players as well as three starters on the offensive line.

Quarterbacks

Leon Jackson III started the first five games at quarterback before being replaced by Riley Nelson, but Nelson has left on an LDS Church Mission and Jackson appears to be the leading contender to regain the position. Jackson completed 73 of 150 attempts for 694 yards and three touchdowns, but had seven interceptions. He is the team’s leading returning rusher with 105 yards last season. He came off the bench in the last four games, seeing extensive action in the season finale against New Mexico State. In that game he hit 12 of 25 passes for 146 and two scores with no interceptions. Jackson was the starter in 2005 and threw for 1,547 yards and rushed for 328 more. He will be pushed this spring by junior college transfer Sean Setzer. Setzer threw for 2,034 yards at Garden City (Kan.) JC last season. Mike Affleck, Jase McCormick and Tom Mix could push for time as well as all three were in the program a year ago.

Running Backs

Last year Marcus Cross showed signs of becoming a solid running back for the Aggies as he rushed for 650 yards. However, the senior-to-be decided to transfer to be closer to his wife and child in Texas and the tailback position is up for grabs. Redshirt freshmen Derrvin Speight and Jacob Actkinson and true freshman Curtis Marsh, appear to be the leaders in earning the starting position. Two returning players saw action here last year, but both were thrown in in emergency situations. Aaron Lesue, a wide receiver, was converted to tailback for the last two games and rushed 16 times for 51 yards. Chris Forbes, who led the Aggies in rushing in 2004, spent last season as a backup safety before playing in the season finale and carrying one time for a three-yard touchdown. The fullback position is also open and the leading contenders for the position are Actkinson as well as Josh Anderson, who spent 2006 as a linebacker.

7 Wide Receivers

Kevin Robinson, one of the WAC’s biggest playmakers, leads a group of talented returnees at the wide receiver positions. The senior-to-be led the team with 36 receptions for 582 yards and five touchdowns. He produced two 100yard games in the last half of the year. He will be joined by Otis Nelson, who was second on the team with 27 catches for 238 yards and one score, as well as Xavier Bowman (6-74), Omar Sawyer (5-51), and Nnamdi Gwacham (3-41), who all saw action last year. In addition Tarell Richards (1078) could be eligible in the fall after applying for a medical hardship.

Tight Ends

The Aggies boast three players with experience at this position in Rob Myers, Jimmy Bohm and Will Fausel. Myers led the group with 10 catches for 125 yards last season, while Bohm, four catches for 16 yards, and Fausel, no receptions, excelled as blockers. Both Bohm and Fausel are threeyear letterwinners, while Myers has earned two letters.

Offensive Line

Three starters return along the offensive line in tackle Shawn Murphy and guards Ryan Tonnemacher and Pace Jorgensen. Jorgensen has a team-best 27 career starts, while both Murphy and Tonnemacher started all 12 games a year ago. In addition, Derek Hoke, who has started five games in the last two seasons, is expected to break into the lineup at one tackle position. Murphy could be moved to a guard position to make way for redshirt Spencer Johnson, while Tonnemacher is moving from guard to center.

Defense Utah State returns 11 starters as well as six other players who started at least three games last season. Even with last year’s experience, the group is still very young with just four of the returning players listed as seniors this year. In 2006, USU faced four offenses that were ranked in the top 10 in total offense, as well as nine opponents whose offenses were in the national top 50.

Defensive Line

Three seniors, all three-year letterwinners, should rotate in the interior in Ben Childs, Frank Maile, and E.J. Reid. Maile started eight games last year, Childs six and Reid four. Reid led the group with 29 tackles, including three for loss, while Maile added 26 tackles, including 4.5 for loss and Childs made 19 stops, including one sack. Alan Bishop, who saw action last year as well, will figure into the mix. On the ends, Ben Calderwood, a second-team all-WAC selection last year, will lead a group which also includes Carl Singleton, Bevan Howard, Darby Golden, Jon Overton. Calderwood missed two games with a hand injury, but still managed to record 44 tackles, including 6.5 for loss on the year. His 44 stops led the Aggie linemen and were eighth on the team. Singleton came on late last year and recorded two sacks, while Howard had 16 tackles in nine starts, Golden made 18 stops and Overton added 10 tackles. Others that could figure in, include freshman Junior Keiaho and redshirts Nathan Royster and Brian Mason.

2007 UTAH STATE FOOTBALL

Linebackers

This group battled injuries in 2006, but has gained experience in the last two years. Middle linebacker Jake Hutton, a third-team freshman All-America by the Sporting News in 2005, returns after missing two-thirds of last year with a foot injury. He had a team-best 87 tackles in 2005 and was leading the team through four games last year before being injured. Paul Igboeli was the WAC Freshman of the Year after registering 69 tackles, a figure that ranked first among all WAC freshmen as well as 15th overall. Igboeli also added eight tackles for loss, which ranked eighth in the WAC. Devon Hall, a two-year starter, was third on the team with 68 tackles, while recording 4.5 tackles for loss, one interception, three pass break ups and three fumble recoveries. Derrick Cumbee started five games in the middle of the season in his first year and finished with 48 tackles, while Daryl Fields started five games and had 45 stops. Look for junior college transfer Deshon Benton to see playing time as well.

Secondary

8 Special Teams

USU features one of the nation’s most dangerous return men in Kevin Robinson. In his Aggie career he has returned three punts and one kickoff for scores. In 2004 he earned freshman All-America honors as a return man by the FWAA and The Sporting News and was the first-team all-conference return specialist. USU returns its punter from last year in quarterback Leon Jackson III. Jackson averaged 37.7 yards per punt last season, placing 16 of his 74 boots inside the opponent 20yard line. He also had eight 50-plus yard punts, including a season-long of 64. Jackson also handled the punting duties as a freshman in 2004 and averaged 42.3 yards per kick with a long of 67. The place-kicking chores will be handled by a newcomer as Bryan Shields, who hit two of four attempts last year and Justin Hamblin, who was zero for one, are no longer on the team. USU signed Peter Caldwell from Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah, but he will not arrive on campus until the summer.

The entire starting secondary returns in tact and two others gained plenty of experience last year. Manning the corners are Marquise Charles and Kejon Murphy, with experienced players Drew Pearson (seven starts last year) and Joshua Taylor expected to see plenty of playing time. Charles recorded 36 tackles and four passes broken up, while Murphy, who started the final four games, had 21 tackles. Pearson started seven games and had 34 tackles, one interception and four passes broken up. Taylor broke up two passes and made 17 tackles. Others that should see action at the corners include redshirts Sidney Allen and Geno Odong. The safety positions boast Antonio Taylor and Caleb Taylor. Antonio Taylor became the first non-linebacker to lead USU in tackles in a season since 1978 as he recorded 74 tackles a year ago. He also returned an interception for a touchdown against Wyoming and had six passes broken up on the year. Caleb Taylor was fourth on the team with 64 stops and led the team with two interceptions, while also forcing two fumbles. James Brindley saw some playing time, while USU will also look to highly touted junior college transfer Roy Hurst as well as redshirt Maxim Dinka and freshman Walter McClenton.

A depth chart will not be released until the completion of spring practice.

GAME #2

Sept. 9

at War Memorial Stadium, Laramie, Wyo.

at Razorback Stadium, Fayetteville, Ark.

WYOMING 38, UTAH STATE 7

ARKANSAS 20, UTAH STATE 0

While the Utah State offense struggled, the Aggie defense kept the team in the game before finally wearing out in the fourth quarter as Wyoming posted a 38-7 victory in the season opener for both teams last Saturday. USU produced just 129 yards on just 48 plays during the game, while Wyoming ran up 460 yards on 78 plays. The Cowboys scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Despite Wyoming's statistical dominance, Utah State remained in the game thanks to Antonio Taylor's 45-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the second quarter which brought USU to within 10-7 at the half. The score remained 10-7 until the Cowboys scored with :24 left in the third period to push their lead to 17-7. That score was the first of four straight possessions Wyoming scored on (includes an interception for a score). The Aggie offense produced just one play longer than nine yards in the game, as Leon Jackson hit Kevin Robinson on a 33-yard pass in the fourth quarter. The Aggies threw for just 74 yards in the game, while rushing for just 55 more. Marcus Cross made his USU debut and rushed 11 times for 44 yards. Robinson was the receiving leader catching two for 41 yards. Defensively, Devon Hall and Jake Hutton each had nine tackles for USU.

Marcus Cross became just the third Utah State player to rush for 100 yards in the last 27 games, but it wasn’t enough as the Aggies fell 20-0 at Southeastern Conference opponent Arkansas. Cross, a junior in his second game at USU, carried 29 times for 103 yards as the Aggies rushed for 135 yards on the night. USU also added 114 passing yards, but Arkansas produced 457 yards of total offense in getting the win. The Aggies kept Arkansas out of the endzone in the first quarter and in fact kept the Razorbacks off the board until 8:01 remained in the second quarter. The Razorbacks capped a 50-yard drive with the first of two Darren McFadden touchdown runs. After a late second quarter touchdown, Arkansas’ only other score was a 72-yard run in the middle of the third quarter as McFadden burst through the line for the longest run allowed by the Aggies since 2002. USU threatened late in the game getting the ball inside the Arkansas 10-yard line on its final possession, but three straight incomplete passes finished USU’s chances of not being shutout.

Note-able Several Aggies made their first career starts today. On defense, CB Drew Pearson, S Caleb Taylor, LB Daryl Fields, and DE Darby Golden all started for the first time. On offense it was TB Marcus Cross, OT Shawn Murphy and OT Taylor Wallace... Antonio Taylor’s 45-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter was the first by an Aggie since Toriano Taulogo returned one 44 yards vs. New Mexico State in 2004. It was also Taylor’s third career interception... USU’s 129 yards of total offense was its fewest in a game since recording 82 yards at Illinois in 1989. Score By Quarters Utah State 0 Wyoming 3

GAME #4

Sept. 23

at Romney Stadium, Logan, Utah

at LaVell Edwards Stadium, Provo, Utah

UTAH 48, UTAH STATE 0

BRIGHAM YOUNG 38, UTAH STATE 0

For the third game in a row the Utah State offense was shutout as the Aggies fell to Utah 48-0 in its home opener here Saturday night. The tone of the game was set on the first series as Aggie quarterback Leon Jackson was intercepted for the first time in seven appearances in Romney Stadium and had that throw returned 21 yards for a touchdown by Eric Shyne just 1:06 into the game. The Utes scored 17 first-quarter points after the Aggies had allowed just one field goal in the opening period of their first two games combined. By halftime the Utes had pushed the margin to 24-0 and at the end of the third quarter the Aggies were down 38-0. USU recorded just 98 offensive yards while Utah rolled up 401. Jackson completed just four of 15 passes for 39 yards and two interceptions before giving way to a pair of backup quarterbacks in Bryan Black and Mike Affleck. Black, who made his first appearance for USU since playing as a freshman in 2003, was two of three, but fumbled once. Affleck was 0 of two. In all, USU had six turnovers after committing just one in the first two games combined. In fact, the Aggies had not had more than one turnover in its previous five games dating back to last year. USU’s rushing game produced 34 yards as the Aggies had 83 positive yards and 49 negative yards. USU’s longest play on the day was a 23-yard pass from Jackson to Nnamdi Gwacham, who was playing in his first collegiate game, while the longest run was nine yards by Marcus Cross. Defensively, LB Jake Hutton recorded a game-high 10 tackles, while S Terrance Washington and DT E.J. Reid each added seven stops.

Utah State’s football team was shutout for the third straight game as the Aggies lost 38-0 at in-state rival Brigham Young on Saturday afternoon. Marcus Cross led the USU offensive effort rushing for 127 yards and catching five passes for 38 yards. He became the first Aggie to record two 100-yard rushing games in a season since 2003. He also became the first USU player to lead the team in rushing and receiving yards in the same game since wide receiver Kevin Robinson led in both categories against San Jose State in the fourth game of last year. USU’s defense was led by sophomore transfer Derrick Cumbee, who in his first collegiate start, recorded a game-high 11 tackles. BYU scored on each of its first four possessions to take a 24-0 lead midway through the second quarter. The Cougars added a touchdown in the third quarter on an interception return and then posted another score on its final drive of the day. USU reached the red zone twice in the game, but came away without a score both times. The Aggies produced 242 yards of offense, but allowed the Cougars 441 on the day. USU owned the time of possession advantage holding the ball for 34:10 to BYU’s 25:50, but USU averaged just 3.5 yards per play while BYU gained 7.1 per attempt.

Utah State jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter, but gave up 41 consecutive points before adding a final touchdown en route to losing its Western Athletic Conference opener 41-21 to Idaho. Utah State, which had not scored an offensive touchdown in its first four games, took the opening kickoff and marched 71 yards in 10 plays to put its first offensive points of the year on the board. Marcus Cross capped the drive with a sixyard scoring run at the 11:10 mark. The Aggies added their second touchdown just three minutes later as they recovered a pooched kickoff at the Idaho 21-yard line. USU needed just five plays to get in the endzone when Leon Jackson hit tight end Jimmy Bohm for a one-yard touchdown pass to give the Aggies a 14-0 lead at the 8:16 mark of the first quarter. After producing 92 yards in its first 15 plays of the game, the Aggies’ next eight drives resulted in five punts, two interceptions and a fumble. In that stretch, USU had four three and outs. The Aggies did put together an 11-play 66-yard drive midway through the second quarter, but after reaching the Idaho seven-yard line, Jackson’s cross field pass was picked off by Stanley Franks and returned 98 yards for a Vandal score. Had USU scored on the drive it would have given the Aggies a 21-10 lead, but instead USU found itself behind 17-14. USU did produce a season high 306 yards, while holding Idaho to an Aggie opponent season-low 316 yards. Cross ran 16 times for 68 yards, while Jackson completed 16 of 24 attempts for 136 yards and one touchdown. However Jackson threw two interceptions after opening the game by hitting his first seven attempts.

Freshman quarterback Riley Nelson guided Utah State to a thrilling 13-12 come from behind victory in his first collegiate start here Saturday night. Nelson found Fresno native Kevin Robinson on a 30-yard touchdown pass with just :55 left in the game to boost the Aggies to just their second victory in their last 13 games. The Aggies drove 80 yards in 11 plays on the game-winning drive just after Fresno State extended its 9-7 lead to 12-7 with a field goal at the 3:56 mark. Nelson, who set several national records as a prep senior, including accounting for 84 touchdowns last season at Logan High School, was nine of 19 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Nelson had played the last two series in USU’s previous game against Idaho. Nelson was six of six passing for 57 yards, while rushing three times for 34 more yards on the final drive. He had rushes of 16 and 21 yards on the final series and converted three third-down plays on the drive. Utah State took an early 7-0 lead as Marcus Cross scored on a 54-yard reception late in the first quarter. The Aggies held Fresno State scoreless in the first half, marking the first time the opponents did not score before the break since 2003. Fresno State evened the score at the 9:04 mark of the third quarter on a 60-yard pass to Chastin West. That was the longest pass allowed by the Aggies this season. Fresno State took the lead on a safety when an errant Utah State punt snap sailed back 30 yards into the endzone early in the fourth quarter. Leading 9-7, the visiting Bulldogs added a 29-yard field goal with 3:56 left in the game before USU’s final drive. On the night Fresno State outgained Utah State 319 yards to 267 behind 138 rushing yards from Dwayne Wright. The Aggies countered with 93 rushing yards by Cross, as well as 76 on the ground by Nelson. Noteable Riley Nelson became the first quarterback to lead USU to a victory in his first start since Anthony Calvillo in 1992... USU produced its season longest rush (32 yards) and longest pass (54 yards), both by Marcus Cross.

San Jose State capped an 11-play, 81-yard drive with a Patrick Perry three-yard run with 3:56 remaining to post a 21-14 come-frombehind victory against Utah State in San Jose on Saturday. The Aggies jumped out to a 14-0 lead for the second time this season, only to fall once again. Two weeks ago, USU led Idaho 14-0 after its first two possessions before allowing 41 consecutive points in a 41-21 loss. On Saturday, The Aggies held their 14-0 advantage until midway through the second quarter. San Jose State scored on two long passes in the second and third quarters as Yonus Davis hauled in a 33-yard pass in the second quarter and James Jones scored on a 50-yard pass to tie the game with 2:01 left in the third period. Perry provided the game’s final points with just under four minutes remaining in the game. The Aggies had one last chance, just like its game last week against Fresno State, when USU marched 80 yards for the game-winning score with just :55 left after the Bulldogs has pulled ahead 12-7 with 3:56 left in that game. USU started its final drive at its own 24-yard line with 3:56 left on Saturday. Aggie quarterback Riley Nelson hit Ryan Bohm for a nine-yard gain and then broke a long run down the USU sideline on the next play. However, the Aggies were called for holding and the ball was set at the USU 35-yard line. Nelson then hit Xavier Bowman and Antraun McDaniel for gains of eight and four respectively before connecting with Kevin Robinson for 23 yards to get to the San Jose State 30-yard line. After USU gained seven yards on its next three plays, the Aggies faced fourth and three at the SJSU 23-yard line. Nelson threw a screen to Aggie tight en d Rob Myers, who was tackled for a loss of three to end USU’s chances for its second straight come-back win. Nelson hit 21 of 24 attempts for a school record single-game pass percentage of .875. The previous mark was .823 by Travis Cox, who hit 23 of 27 against New Mexico State in 2004. The Aggies produced 301 yards for its second-best offensive output of the year, just four yards short of the 305 vs. Idaho.

Utah State fell behind 17-0 in the first quarter before responding with a season-high 35 points in a losing effort at Louisiana Tech back on Oct. 21. The Aggies dropped to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the WAC with the 48-35 loss. Louisiana Tech improved to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the WAC. A field goal and two long passes of 66 and 35 yards by the Bulldogs, put the home team up 17-0 in the first quarter. USU scored two of the game's next three touchdowns to pull within 24-14 at halftime. LTU opened the third quarter with consecutive touchdowns and led 38-14 en route to the victory. USU produced a season-best 373 yards in the game, but allowed Louisiana Tech 570 yards. Aggie quarterback Riley Nelson threw for a career-best 249 yards as he hit 12 of 28 attempts, but he was intercepted for the first time this year. On USU's first play Nelson threw the first of his two interceptions in the game. Marcus Cross rushed for 70 yards and two scores, while Kevin Robinson recorded a career-best 141 yard receiving day. Robinson had six catches, including two touchdowns as he eclipsed his previous best yardage game of 131 which he set against Louisiana Tech last year.

Utah State produced 362 yards, but just 10 points in suffering its worst loss since 1989 as the Aggies dropped a game to Hawai’i 63-10. The 53-point scoring margin was the worst for USU since it lost to Southern California by 56 points (66-10) in 1989. After Hawai’i scored a touchdown on its opening drive, Utah State responded with a scoring drive on its own, kicking a 46-yard field goal for its first made field goal of the season. The Aggies had been the only team in the nation without a tree-pointer this season. However, Hawai’i scored the next three touchdowns of the half to take a 28-3 lead into the break. USU opened the third quarter .with a seven-play 80-yard drive that was capped with an Antraun McDaniel one-yard touchdown run to make the score Hawai’i 28-10. The visiting Warriors then added five more touchdowns the rest of the game as they compiled 572 yards, including 486 passing. USU’s Kevin Robinson pulled in five balls for 84 yards to lead the Aggie offense, while quarterback Riley Nelson hit 17 of 29 passes for 225 yards and rushed for 65 yards on 15 carries. However, the freshman also threw one interception and fumbled twice in the contest. Defensively Terrance Washington recorded the eighth interception of his career, while Devon Hall and Paul Igboeli each had a team-best five tackles.

Utah State suffered its fourth shutout this season on Saturday, as the Aggies were blanked by Nevada 42-0 at a rainy and snowy Mackay Stadium. In making his first start as an Aggie, junior tailback Antraun McDaniel rushed for a career-high 78 yards on 14 carries, as Utah State tallied only 207 yards of offense. Nevada had 342 yards of offense, as Luke Lippincott rushed for 144 yards on 25 carries and found the end zone twice, while Jeff Rowe was 12 of 19 passing for 140 yards and a TD, rushing for two TD’s as part of his 37 yards rushing. The Wolf Pack’s Dwayne Sanders took the opening kickoff 83 yards to the Utah State 7, and three plays later, Rowe hit Robert Hubbard with a 4-yard pass and Brett Jaekle tacked on the PAT for a 7-0 Nevada lead at the 13:40 mark. The Aggies countered with a 73-yard drive, highlighted by a 25-yard run by McDaniel. After the drive reached second and goal at the Nevada goal line, Utah State was stopped on three-straight plays to turn the ball over on downs. Lippincott scored on a 5-yard scamper with 3:20 left in the first half as Nevada took a 14-0 lead into halftime. The Wolf Pack erupted for 21 third-quarter points to open a 35-0 lead after three stanzas. Junior backup quarterback Leon Jackson III engineered a drive mid-way through the fourth quarter, leading the Aggies down to the Nevada 11, before again turning the ball over on downs. Starting freshman quarterback Riley Nelson was 6 of 15 for 45 yards, with two interceptions, as well as being sacked twice and being held to negative two yards rushing. Jackson was 3 of 6 for 37 yards with an interception, while junior tailback Marcus Cross had 12 carries for 34 yards. Junior wideout Kevin Robinson had three receptions for 40 yards. Defensively, junior strong safety Antonio Taylor had a game-high eight tackles and one pass break up.

Jared Zabransky completed 21 of 23 passing attempts for 236 yards and three touchdowns to lead 13th-ranked Boise State to a 49-10 victory against Utah State last Saturday. The Broncos jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead and made it 21-0 just minutes into the second before Utah State's Bryan Shields kicked USU's second field goal of the season. Shields drilled a 31-yarder as the Aggies converted after USU's James Brindley forced and recovered a fumble at the BSU 46-yard line. BSU then scored 21 straight points before USU's defense put up its third score of the season. Linebacker Paul Igboeli recorded a sack and forced a fumble that Devon Hall picked up and ran 64 yards with for a score to make it 42-10. The Aggies produced just 188 yards of total offense in the game, while the Broncos, who entered the game with the 15th-ranked offense in the nation, produced 488 yards. USU quarterback Riley Nelson rushed for more yards (45) than he passed for (40) as the Aggies managed only seven first downs and were two of 13 on third-down conversions. Leon Jackson III saw his most extensive playing time at quarterback since losing the starting job after five games. The junior hit three of four attempts for 58 yards, including a 43-yard toss to Kevin Robinson. Robinson finished the game with three receptions for 58 yards. Aaron Lesue added two catches for 20 yards as USU had just 98 receiving yards to go along with 90 rushing yards. Defensively the Aggies were led by Igboeli, who recorded a game-high 10 tackles, including the 13-yard sack. Daryl Fields, who made his second straight start at linebacker, had eight tackles. The Broncos scored on each of their first three possessions, while USU went three and out on each of its first three possessions.

New Mexico State scored 28 first quarter points en route to a 42-20 win at Utah State in the home team’s season finale here Saturday afternoon. USU was led by quarterback Leon Jackson, who came off the bench to throw for 146 yards and two scores in relief of Riley Nelson. Jackson connected with Kevin Robinson on a 27-yard scoring strike in the second quarter and then hit Otis Nelson from four yards out six minutes later to pull the northern Aggies to within 28-12 after a pair of missed two-point conversions. The teams traded touchdowns and USU trailed 35-20 with 4:18 left in the third quarter. Both of USU’s final two possessions ended in downs, while NMSU added its final score with 4:24 left in the game. Robinson caught four passes for 101 yards and a score, while Jackson led the team in rushing with 48 yards on eight carries. The Aggies played without starting tailback Marcus Cross, who was injured. USU started wide receiver Aaron Lesue at tailback and he responded by rushing 11 times for 34 yards. Defensively linebacker Paul Igboeli and safety Terrance Washington, each recorded 10 tackles. Igboeli had a tackle for loss, while Washington, a senior who was playing in his final game, forced a fumble. Caleb Taylor and Devon Hall each registered nine tackles.
