Using Web Jetadmin to Update the HP Print Server Appliance (Web Jetadmin version 7.2 and above; PSA Firmware version 2.4.x and above)

Overview The HP Print Server Appliance (PSA) Management plug-in for Web Jetadmin enables administrators to perform numerous tasks for one or multiple PSA in a batch environment. This whitepaper discusses how to update the firmware for the PSA using Web Jetadmin. Other features in the Management plug-in are: Feature Install the PSA’s Management plug-in Configure settings for a single PSA or for multiple PSAs in a batch environment Back up and restore the PSA Manage printer drivers on the PSA

Description of the HP Print Server Appliance The PSA is a network device used to manage and monitor printing (Figure 1). It has been designed to provide a quick and easy way to add print capacity and off-load print spooling and services from the general-purpose servers. The latest firmware version is 2.4.x, which includes support for Web Jetadmin plug-ins that provide centralized management of the printing environment and infrastructure.

Installing the PSA’s Management Plug-in The PSA’s Management Plug-in is available from hp.com, using Web Jetadmin’s automated download facility. Before installing the plug-in for Web Jetadmin 7.2, the HP Service Patch 2 must be installed. This patch can be installed using Product Update in HP Web Jetadmin for Microsoft Windows NT/2000/XP. If HP Web Jetadmin is configured for internet access, the patch will already appear under the list of available updates in Product Update. Otherwise, the package can be manually downloaded from www.hp.com/go/wja_components and uploaded into Product Update. For more information about the plug-ins, see the Web Jetadmin whitepaper Overview of Plug-ins (www.hp.com/go/wja_whitepapers).

Accessing the PSA’s Management Plug-in from Web Jetadmin After the PSA’s Management plug-in is installed, there are several ways to access the features (Figure 2).

To manage multiple PSAs, use one of these methods: 1. Under Navigation on the left, select Device Management Tools PSA Management. 2. Select the PSA Upgrade. or 1. Under Navigation on the left, select Device List All Devices. 2. Highlight the desired PSAs. 3. From the Device Tools drop-down menu at the top of the page, select PSA Upgrade. or 1. Under Navigation on the left, select Device Management Device Groups. 2. Select the desired PSAs’ group and then highlight the desired PSAs within that group. 3. To manage one PSA at a time through Quick Device Find (under At a Glance): 1. On the left side of the page in Quick Device Find, type the PSA’s name or IP address. Then click Go. The Device Properties page for the PSA is displayed. 2. From the drop-down menu at the top of the page, select PSA Upgrade.

Updating Firmware for the PSA When new versions of the firmware for the PSA are developed, they will be available for download from hp.com to the system with your browser; after you have downloaded the updated firmware image you can then upgrade one or more PSA. A summary of the steps required is: 1. Select the PSAs to be updated using one of the methods described in the previous section. 2. Determine the update options which include: • • •

Selecting the desired firmware image. Scheduling the date and time for the image to be transferred to the PSA(s). How notification of results will be made.

3. Confirm that the choices made are correct. This feature uses an HTTP Post to transfer the selected firmware image file to each PSA, which is the same way the Update process works in the PSA’s web interface. PSAs are updated one at a time even if multiple PSAs are selected. After the first selected PSA has been updated, the second selected PSA will be updated, and so forth. If you want multiple PSAs to be updated simultaneously, schedule each one individually (repeat these steps per PSA to update).

Updating the Firmware for One PSA or Multiple PSAs To update the firmware for one or multiple PSAs, follow these steps: 1. To update the firmware for one PSA, access the Device Page for the PSA and then select PSA FW Update from the drop-down list in the toolbar at the top of the page. Go to Step 2. To update the firmware for multiple PSAs in a batch mode, in the navigation frame drop-down box select Device Management Tools PSA Management PSA FW Update. The PSA Firmware Update page is displayed (Figure 3).

(This file should have the extension “.hp”.) Note:

You must have appropriate access on any system from which you are trying to retrieve a file (for example, for updates).

4. Select the date and time for the firmware to be updated (or for the image to be transferred to the PSA). It is recommended to select a time of day when network traffic is at a minimum. Note: The default setting for the PSA firmware update schedule is Update Now which means that the update will begin as son as you click Confirm on a following page.

An email notification will be sent detailing the results of the update. To send the message to multiple email addresses, use the ';' as a delimiter. To send a test email, click Test Now. If an SMTP server has not been configured, then an alert message is displayed asking if you want to set the SMTP settings now. •

To remove the email addresses entered earlier, click Cancel in the alert message box and proceed with the update process. No notifications will be sent.

To set SMTP settings, click OK in the message box. The Network Settings – SMTP page is displayed. Type a mail server in SMTP Server and click Apply. A second page is displayed asking you to test the email connection. After you test it, go to the next step.

6. Click Next to start the update. The PSA Firmware Update Confirmation page is displayed (Figure 5). (To change the settings, click Back).

Figure 8 - PSA Firmware Update Status Page

There are two sections to this page: •

The top half, PSAs Awaiting Update, shows the PSAs waiting to be updated. Possible statuses displayed in PSAs Awaiting Update are: Not Started: The firmware update process has not begun yet. Updating…: The firmware update file is transferring. File upload complete: The firmware update file has been transferred and the PSA is now processing the file. File processing complete - Restarting PSA: The PSA has finished processing the firmware update file and will undergo a restart (reboot) Retrying Update: A problem occurred in the firmware update process; another attempt is being made to complete an update successfully

The lower half, PSA Update Results, shows the results of recent updates that were scheduled to run and have run. Possible statuses displayed in PSA Update Results are: Successful: The corresponding PSA has been updated to the new firmware correctly. PSA Authentication Error: A problem with access permissions to the corresponding PSA was encountered. Error - Invalid URL (Internal): An authentication error has occurred. Error not able to monitor PSA status: Communications between the Management plug-in and the PSA encountered problems.

7

No file was provided with the update request: The PSA did not receive the firmware update file during the transfer phase of the update process. Error processing the update file: The PSA had problems working with the firmware update file. Can Not Complete: A problem occurred in the update process not allowing the process to complete Unknown status response: The PSA responded to the plug-in with an undefined response. Unsuccessful: The firmware update did not work. An I/O Error occurred while transferring the file: A communication problem occurred while the firmware update file was being transferred. Connection Error: There was a problem connecting to the PSA. Error not able to monitor PSA status: Internal error for PSAs with firmware revision 2.3.x. Invalid update file: The file specified is not a valid update file for this PSA. An update is currently in progress: There is another update already in progress. Another event is preventing an update: Events such as backup and restore must be completed before an update can begin. Error executing setup. Reboot appliance to continue updating: Internal error. The PSA must be rebooted. Not enough disk space for update. Try again when there are fewer print jobs pending: The update requires a certain amount of disk space, depending upon the configuration of the PSA, the number of print shares, drivers, and print jobs. Schedule the update again when there are few print jobs. Another backup is already in progress: A backup is currently in process. Schedule the update when the backup has completed. Another restore is already in progress: A restore is currently in process. Schedule the update when the restore has completed. Not enough memory: There is not enough memory to perform the update, possibly because there are a large number of print jobs. Try updating the PSA later when there are fewer print jobs.

Summary Using the PSA’s Management plug-in for Web Jetadmin enables administrators to manage one or multiple PSAs in a batch environment. Firmware updates can be easily scheduled to occur immediately (and simultaneously) or at a time that ensures minimal impact on end users.
