Connecting to a car

To connect to a car: •

Ensure that the interface is securely connected to the PC and to the car, and that the car ignition is on (or the engine is running).

Click the ‘Connect’ button on the toolbar

Select the car manufacturer (or leave it set to Any). Note: By selecting the car manufacturer, fault code definitions will be more accurately displayed

In the dropdowns, you can leave the options set to Auto Detect, or you can select the correct COM port for your PC connection (your interface instructions and PC manual should help you identify this)

Click Connect

The connection process will then begin. The status window will display connection progress. If all goes well, you should see that the status of the various connection phases being displayed, and you will be left with a status of ‘Connected’. The Connection window will automatically close when connection is complete. Multiple modules If the car has more than one controller module providing engine information, EngineCheck Pro will display a window to ask you which you would like to connect to:

Once a module is selected, only data from that module will be displayed. To switch to another module, click the Disconnect button and then Connect again – choosing the required module. Connection problems If the connection does not complete, please ensure that the settings on the page are correct, and that the car ignition is on. Try the connection again with the engine running. Please also try disconnecting and reconnecting the interface from the car. If you cannot establish a connection, and the car is EOBD (In Europe: 2001+ petrol, 2004+ diesel) or OBDII (1996+ in USA) compliant, please contact us with the details: [email protected] Lack of sensors in sensor lists Some cars incorrectly report the list of sensors they support. If you find that no sensors are listed on the data tabs, try selecting the ‘Test sensors’ option in the ‘Sensor Support’ dropdown on the ‘Advanced Settings’ before clicking Connect. The ‘Advanced Settings’ tab also contains other options to help get around problems with certain cars. For normal use, these settings do not need to be changed. Disconnecting from a car To disconnect to a car: •

Click the Disconnect button on the toolbar

Fault codes and Freeze Frame data

Fault codes The fault codes tab will display the fault codes read from the engine-management system on the car. This will include both: stored codes

codes indicating faults found by the car

pending codes

codes that the car is ‘keeping an eye on’. A fault has occurred, but the car may need to see it occur over a number of drive cycles before it will log a stored code

MIL status This shows the status of your Check Engine light (or Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)) Refresh button This will retrieve the latest information from the car Clear codes button Reset the engine-management system and clear the fault codes and freeze frame data. This will switch the Check Engine light off, and will clear any learned values within the ECU (e.g. fuel trim settings) and also the on-board tests back to ‘not complete’. Over the next few drive cycles, the car will re-run its on-board tests, and will ‘relearn’ the fuelling settings etc.

Freeze Frame data A snapshot of the engine sensors taken by the ECU when a particular fault code was stored. The fault code that caused the snapshot is shown in the first line. The information can show how the car was running at the time the fault occurred, e.g. whether it was idling or driving on a motorway. Printing reports or graphs

The print icon on the toolbar will generate a printout of the information from the currently selected tab. This report can be saved or printed. The print icon will generate a report for the following tabs: Fault codes, Live graphs, Oxygen sensors, Test status and Playback graphs. Fault code definitions EngineCheck Pro contains definitions for the thousands of generic and manufacturer-specific EOBD and OBDII fault codes. Code definitions can also be looked up on the Fault Code Library tab. For additional code definitions, please visit our online reference library:

Live data and graphs

Live data, graphs and grid To view live information from the car, select the required sensor from the dropdown lists, or tick the box to the left on the data grid tab. The data will update as new information is received from the car. To stop a sensor reading, simply select ‘Off’ from the dropdown list, or untick the box on the data grid. The minimum and maximum values for each sensor are also displayed on the graphs and live data tabs. These can be reset by clicking the relevant ‘Reset’ button. Each of the graphs also displays the minimum, maximum and average values of the readings currently being displayed. Update frequency Please note that the update frequency of the values will reduce as more sensors are selected. This is normal, as the car is only able to provide a certain amount of information at any one time. This is in part limited by the communications speed of the diagnostic interfaces, but also to prevent the ECU itself becoming overloaded by diagnostic requests.

Oxygen Sensors

The Oxygen Sensors tab provides: • • •

live readings from the Oxygen Sensors themselves the status of the Fuel Systems (Open/Closed loop – see table below) the sensor characteristics and test results reported by the car (where available)

The example graph in the bottom left corner of the screen indicates the normal operation of a Zirconia narrow-band oxygen sensor. To activate the readings for a sensor, select the sensor in the dropdown list. The ‘Oxygen sensor test results’ will automatically be updated before the sensor readings start. If the car does not support a particular test, the information will be shown as ‘Not reported’. The Fuel System status is updated every 2 to 3 seconds. The following page shows a table of the Fuel System Status

10

 2013 Gendan Limited

EngineCheck Pro Feb 2013 v3.1 Pro

Fuel System Status The status of the fuel systems on the car. These will be: Open loop

The normal condition while the oxygen/lambda sensors are warming up. The engine is ‘ignoring’ the output from the oxygen/lambda sensors, until the sensors reach operating temperature.

Closed loop

The normal condition once the oxygen/lambda sensors have reached operating temperature. The engine is using the output from the oxygen/lambda sensors to control the fuelling.

Open loop (accelerating)

The car is not using the output from the oxygen/lambda sensors while the car is accelerating.

Closed loop (system fault)

The car is in closed loop, but it has detected a fault with the oxygen/lambda sensor.

Open loop (system fault)

The car is not able to go into Closed Loop because it has detected a fault with the oxygen/lambda sensors.

Test status

Continuous monitors The status of the on-board tests that are being continuously run by the car enginemanagement system. The status on these tests will almost always be Completed, as even after the engine-management system has been reset, will run and complete straight away. Non-continuous monitors The status of the on-board tests that are run over a number of drive-cycles. After an engine-management system reset, these will be Not Completed. Over the subsequent drive cycles, these tests will be run and will switch to Completed. Not all of the tests will be run by the car – these are indicated by the Not supported by car entries. Vehicle Information Information about the car (where supported by the vehicle): • • • • • • • •

VIN number, software version of the ECU itself (Calibration ID (CAL ID)) Calibration Verification Number (CVN) battery voltage diagnostics protocol information oxygen sensor locations fuel type alcohol fuel percentage

Recording and Playback

The recording function is driven by the Live Data Grid tab. Select the sensors you wish to record on the Live Data Grid tab and then click the ‘Record’ button. The readings will then be shown live on the Recordings tab. These can then be view on the Playback graphs or saved for use in other applications, e.g. a spreadsheet. Please bear in mind that as more sensors are logged, the update rate of the data will be lower. Please note: when recording the sensor values, you must keep the software on the Recordings or Live Data Grid tabs. If you change to a different tab, the recording will pause until you return to one of these tabs. Record button (Live Data Grid tab) This will begin logging the data from the selected sensors Stop button (Live Data Grid tab and Recordings tab) This will stop the data logging Save button (Recordings tab) Save the recorded information into a Comma Separated Values file (.csv) Clear button (Recordings tab) Remove all of the stored data from the recordings table Load button (Recordings tab) Load a previous recording from a file for review on the Recordings tab and Playback graphs
