WRAP...Wellness Recovery Action Plan ®

"Training WRAP® Facilitators to serve in our communities is not just about equipping people in recovery to have an effective personal plan for their wellness, it also creates a cultural shift from communities focused on illness management and individual deficits to a community focused on wellness and individual strengths." Become a Copeland Centre WRAP® Facilitator... The training we provide is based on and originates from the unique insights of Dr. Mary Ellen Copeland and her grassroots, peer generated WRAP curriculum. The integrity of these trainings are demonstrated in the support people receive who use WRAP and promote their self-directed wellness. WRAP is not just another kind of treatment plan. The central importance is on relationship. Its power is relational, that stems from meaningful human connection, which is communicated through the experience of a facilitated peer group. What sets WRAP aside, as a truly unique evidenced based practice is the specialised peer support techniques of trained WRAP Facilitators and Advanced Level WRAP Facilitators. The replication of these specialised techniques by support workers, mental health clinicians and employees who are trained by Copeland Centre Advanced Level WRAP Facilitators will benefit your organisation by incorporating an evidence-based practice that delivers demonstrable positive outcomes. WRAP® Facilitator... The WRAP Facilitators course is a life changing experiential learning environment based on mutuality and self-determination. Over 5 days of fun and interactive workshops this course prepares participants with the skills and materials to effectively deliver the WRAP program.

What is WRAP? WRAP stands for Wellness Recovery Action Plan, a well researched and evidenced based practice. WRAP is a self-management system which supports individuals to monitor and manage their wellbeing. This involves developing tools and strategies in order to achieve a level of wellness which encourages people to move beyond simply managing mental health distress to building a meaningful life. The WRAP framework can be applied to support individuals to be clear about: • • • • • •

How to keep well What to do if you are becoming unwell Signs that you may be becoming unwell Triggers that may cause you to feel unwell How to get back on track after you have been unwell Instruct others about what they can do on your behalf if you become unwell.

WRAP in reverse is “Planned Action Recovers Wellness” and WRAP is one way people can reverse from a possible crisis and return back to health. What is a WRAP Crisis Plan?

The WRAP Crisis Plan is like an insurance policy, you may not use it, but it may be helpful if you become unwell.

It is a statement documenting individual preferences in the event that they may have a future mental health crisis. Noticing and responding to signs early reduces the chances that you find yourself in a crisis. However it can be important to confront the possibility of a crisis because sometimes in spite of the best planning and assertive action, people may find themself in a crisis situation where others will need to take over responsibility for your care. This is a difficult situation that, one that no one likes to face. In a crisis you may feel like you are totally out of control. Writing a clear crisis plan when you are well, to instruct others about how to care for you when you are not well, keeps you taking responsibility for your own care. It will keep your family members, clinicians, supporters and friends from wasting time. The crisis plan differs from the other action plans in that it will be used by others.

The WRAP crisis plan can support better care... WRAP crisis plans encourage individuals to adapt the plan to meet their needs. WRAP Crisis plans have been used successfully to help people to plan ahead and maintain a degree of autonomy, dignity and sense of control during a crisis with beneficial outcomes on rates of hospital admissions. Effective plans will instruct others about how to care for the person who has written the plan when they are not travelling so well. It allows people to maintain a sense of control and personal regard when things feel or are out of their control. WRAP offers the opportunity to explore what works and what doesn’t in a carefully facilitated environment. One of the challenges is that sometimes individuals we may not have had the opportunity to explore what works for them and what doesn’t. WRAP goes beyond the crisis plan and equips people with life kills and a kind of road map to navigate the ups and down of coming out of a challenging time. This includes the 5 key concepts of recovery, wellness tools, a daily maintenance plan, triggers and action plans, early warning signs and action plans, when things are breaking down and action plans as well a post crisis plan to support individuals to navigate the early stages of coming out of a tough time. As part of completing a WRAP, there is a nine part crisis plan which may be useful when writing your advance statement.

Who can support me to write a WRAP Crisis Plan? The person writing their WRAP decides who they would like to have involved. Individuals are encouraged and often are keen to get their clinicians and other supporters involved to ensure it is understood and honoured by discussing each section with them and asking for any suggestions that they may have. Critical factors include honouring someone’s preferences which requires sufficient detail and correct interpretation of that information

A “WRAP Crisis Plan is like an insurance policy, you may not use it, but it may be helpful if you become unwell.

Often health care professionals are exposed to working with people at their most troublesome times. WRAP is a really effective tool for keeping staff well, and also creates a common language to meaningfully support each other. A mental health crisis often requires people to work together that are from very different walks of life. WRAP provides a way to lower the walls of separation and allows everyone to get on the same page. It was a common belief in the past that recovery was not possible. Once broken you would remain broken forever. We now know recovery is possible in ways that never cease to surprise science. We invite you to open yourself up to be part of an international family of people that are committed to making a recovery approach as available as fresh water. In our experience WRAP is fresh water to those in Crisis. Making it available requires a unique facilitation approach. We will be providing training in this approach.
